Slavia would make Celtic work for their CL place

233

The winners of Celtic-Cluj will face Slavia Prague in the final Champions League qualification round later this month.  Slavia reached the Europa League quarterfinals last season, eliminating Sevilla – who practically own that trophy – on the way.

They also disposed of Bordeaux and Genk before losing to eventual winners, Chelsea.  Dinamo Kiev knocked them out in Champions League qualification.

Although this will be Slavia’s first Champions League qualifier, they have played four domestic league games already, so are likely to be as fit as Celtic, should the sides meet in two weeks.

Two central defenders at the heart of that Europa League run were sold this summer (both heading to Belgium), with much of the money (€4m) going on a creative mid Romanian, Nicolae Stanciu (26), brought home from Saudi – a significant investment for a Romanian club.

Two years ago Slavia were knocked out at the qualification stage by Apoel Nicosia (another team we could have been drawn against today), while Anderlecht eliminated them from the Europa qualifiers three years ago.  Viktoria Plzen, who finished runners up to Slavia in May, reached the Champions League group stage last season, where they finished behind Real Madrid and Roma, but above CSKA Moscow.

Slavia and Plzen showed enough last season to indicate that Czech clubs are dangerous, but this is the playoff round and we were always going to need to work for it.

Cluj first: no injuries, no suspensions, please.

  1. GOD …… WTF

That was meant to be not….

Really should read what I write…. Doh moron

    😂. D. :)

Unfortunately, Rooney’s compensation with DC United this year is $5.1M, including salary and image rights. With the pound at 1.22 to the dollar, that’s about £4.25M. Peter Lawwell would faint to the ground if an agent proposed anywhere near that.

  3. Has Kilmasonic said how many seats were broken yesterday???

They were quick to tell us that the Celtic support broke seats last year were they not???

  4. Good evening, friends.

After my disappointment with Sportscene’s effort at showing highlights from our games (they basically showed the 7 goals and little else) I was pleased to learn that there’s a better 6 minutes of highlights on the SPFL YouTube channel (didn’t know there was such a thing – what a time to be alive!).

All the goals and mora. And no distracting commentary – https://youtu.be/J568teeDqwU

  5. I’ve watched the video of Rangers fans celebrating a famous victory over the mighty Killie, (historic high for Newco isn’t it? Must be to celebrate it so) storming the barricades so to speak and it leaves me with a question:

Is this what they meant when they said they were coming?

Interesting figures and I know what you mean.

However the money for getting points/wins and even taking part in the champions league is getting higher and higher [a bit like players salaries].

Sometimes everyone should treat themselves to a bit of glamour.

Just imagine taking on Europe’s finest in the big cup with Wayne Rooney in our team?.

    Paradise would love it.

Lalwell could give us a wee treat and it would also be a nice ride to the 9 and 10 with a hollywood A-list player.

Probably a fantasy that will remain in my head back in the real world….hehe

  7. Corkie 7.02.

You are correct, to firmly believe that Pedro, is a Celtic fan.

I’m not sure all our board can say that, but Pedro can, because he is.

  8. I saw French Eddy’s dribble and shot from Saturdays game for the first time this afternoon. Each time I’ve watched it since, the ‘Benny Hill’ theme music plays in my head. 😂O

Met an Arsenal fan at a wedding yesterday and he is desperate for KT to sign.

My opinion was that if they pay PL the asking price they’ll get him!

Strange how PL has a fixed price for selling and a’must be negotiated down’ price for buying!

    Cheers for that nod.

I think there’s a great story to be told in his life – book, movie – whatever.

Madden spent the years after WW1 in Czechoslovakia and right through to the end of WW2.

The things he must have seen and endured.

CCB-how would you feel if we gave West Brom the £15m asking price for Burke and sold KT to Arsenal for the same £15m

  13. Pog

I nominate you as Celtic’s greatest ever fan.

Anyone who is willing to endure Luton airport to follow Celtic deserves this accolade.

    Pog,

You enjoy yourself mate, loved European away games, last one was Man Citee. If that counts as European😱

  15. Crushing outside the park at the turnstiles. With the whole of Kilmarnock at their back.Instead of the Sevco hordes backing up a bit, they were forced to rip open a gate, and pile in.

    Is that right??????????.

  16. SIPS,

Defo brought a smile to my face.

My Bhoy, with me just now, has reminded me that in 17 years in Germany we drew a German team once – Bayern in the European group stages.

Since we left Germany 3 years ago we have drawn a German team every year.

  17. “Trapped oootside the ground”……….?????????

Just think abooot that, hunned-up sleekitry at its most brazen.

Bear-faced guff, trumpeted by willing konfederates.

Kilmarnock will yet issue a statement apologising that the disabled section wisnae sturdy enough to withstand the bouncy bouncy brown-brogue brigade…….

    Oh aye!

    Hunbelievable.

I’m expecting some level 5 driven whitabootery when we visit Motherwell next weekend . Video footage of Celtic fans dropping litter and the like.

  19. By the morra, the SNP will have a statement ready aboooot ” O&& F&&&” unacceptable behaviour………

    The 1690 statement :

We are aware of a video which appears to show Rangers supporters opening an access gate in response to pleas from supporters further back in the crowd. This has been characterised negatively by various media outlets including the Daily Record and BBC Scotland journalists. Having watched and listened to the video in question, there is genuine concern from distressed supporters that there is a dangerous situation building up in the crowd and that this gate should be opened to relieve pressure. This concern matches the eye witness accounts, from those further back in the crowd, which we have described above. The situation would never have arisen if the ticketing entry system at Rugby Park had been working properly.

A top level executive decision was made to employ the Hillsborough solution.

  21. Pog- Cluj have asked Celtic fans to pay £36 a ticket, while selling them to their own fans for under a fiver with kids getting in free

  22. Good morning CQN from a wet and grey Garngad

Cluj will obviously be a stiffer test for us although I expect us to score over there and kill the tie off at Paradise. Glad that 1 of the broadcasters are showing it.

To answer my own question from last night, yip Kilmasonic made a scathing statement of our fans last season after Broonie scored and got sent packing. They went on to say that our fans behaviour was totally unnacebtable and loads of seats were broken which Celtic would get billed for.

Have they made such a statement after the Klans visit???
