Small investors in football clubs cannot overpay

1059

Really delighted at the flow of sentiment towards Billy McNeill and the launch of the new frontage of Celtic Park tomorrow.  The place is beginning to look like a 21st Century venue, now we need the shops, restaurants and bars to bring the match-day experience alive.

Were you one of the fans who put £620 (or more) into Celtic shares in 1994?  Around 10,000 did, raising an initial total of around £10m from small investors alone.  It wasn’t an investment, none of us wanted or expected the money back, it was our contribution to Celtic at a time of critical need.

Many small investor-Rangers fans did the same when Newco went to market in December 2012, although one high-profile investor, who coughed up £500k, has asked Dave King to buy him out.

The stark reality facing these shareholders is that if King’s path is followed to a logical conclusion the club will be run into the ground, destroying their investments along with everything else.  I have some sympathy for their position.

King is not interested in buying control of the club, even at the discounted price shares are now available at.  He emailed the £500k investor “Why should any new investor bail out existing investors because they made mistakes in overpaying for their shares. The club needs money not complaining shareholders”.

The price paid by small investors was perhaps the most irrelevant figure to them, they paid the gross figure they could afford, irrespective of price.  The value of the share was irrelevant so to accuse them of making a mistake by overpaying is like criticising the month of March for being too purple.

How the small shareholders feel about this behaviour will not determine what actions the Newco board takes, that will be come down to how easily manipulated people like the Easdales, Mike Ashley and Laxey Partners are.  My information is they are not easily manipulated in the slightest.

Would be amazed if the James Forrest to Everton cr*p is anything other than just that – cr*p. Be mad to sell him in any case IMO.

Just reading the ginger stories at the beginning of the previous blog.

Came back on Monday from the Caribbean with my 8-year-old and a couple of pals with their 10-year-old boy.

In the restaurant one night we’re asking the kids what they want to drink. My wee one says “Can I have a Sprite please?”

The wee lad pipes up: “Can I have a 10-year-old Malt Whisky?”

Confusion reigns till his mum patiently says: “Son, that means the whisky has been in a barrel for ten years. Not that it’s whisky for ten-year-olds.”

I see Everton are supposed to be trying to buy James Forrest for 7million now James no doubt can play a bit he it seems to me he is a little injury prone. So I would take the 7 million and move on what would you do keep or sell ? H.H.

    ==================================

Sorry to say, because I like Jamesy, but at 7 million (!) it’s a no-brainer. Re-invest some of the money in a central-midfield playmaker of good quality.

  8. Calm down, calm down Bhoys. The only player leaving CP this summer will be Fraser Forster in an £8M move back to Newcastle. He will be replaced by Charlie Mulgrew, our star utility player who can play absolutely anywhere, including between the sticks.

Even Georgios will stay, without a contract, and he will be remunerated by way of product endorsements on his kit.

Remember, you read it in the DR first.

Was at that game at OT myself.

It was the last European away match I attended. The guy in front of me was going aff his heid when £30m+ Berbatov scored into the goal at our end. I sat thinking to myself what do these guys expect? We are miles away from them in terms of quality on the pitch. We need to have everyone fully fit and on top form to even have a chance.

  10. James Forrest is the best player we have on our books, outwith Forster & Van Dijk. Therefore, it is no surprise to see a seasoned football scout like Martinez (and Harry Redknapp before him) being interested in bidding for James when many of the other players, more favoured by the CP crowd, do not attract much transfer interest.

£7m would be a steal by Everton. Celtic would be mad to sell at that price- our worst undersell since Boruc to Fiorentina.

If JF is fit for tomorrow would you play him or put an extra man in midfield to try and ensure you with the midfield battle which I feel we lost in the cup game, but JF was outstanding in the 10 man league defeat up there according to reports as I missed it?

  16. I was one of the 10,000 Paul67 – paid the basic £620. There must have been around 20 of us that did this within the extended family, including aunts, uncles, cousins. The silly season approacheth and we’ll no doubt be inundated with half truths and lies regarding transfers. I take what is in the media with less than a grain of salt but would suggest that if the Board decided to sell wee Jamesy it might be the straw that broke Lenny’s back. I know we are a selling club but there comes a time in a manager’s life when being unable to step up to the next level, Europe, because of team disassembly will make that manager look for pastures new.

On another note, how fortunate are we that the Scottish Cup final is not being contested between the Sheep and the zombies? If £10k worth of damage was caused at an under 17 match by the zombie hordes how much damage would have been wreaked upon the stadium by that combination of supporters?

“In my opinion Sammi is a much better player than Jamesy.”

Maybe, but he is 7 years older than James and I’d say contributes less to the domestic games than James does. He is, I’d guess, paid a fair whack more than James too. Also, it is Sammy’s decision where he goes next and not Celtic’s.

Disassembly of a team, or more accurately, re-construction, is a permanent feature of your lot in managing a team outwith the big 5 leagues and even managing a team in the bottom two-thirds of all those leagues.

We cannot ignore the outside world. Players will go and will need to be replaced. that will remain our lot while we are a giant club in a peripheral league. Even if you willfully turned down all transfer bids, you would have unhappy and less motivated players poisoning team morale. We need to live in the real world.

One thing: Fergus never ever disrespected the small shareholder nor ever undervalued them. When he sold up he took DD’s money not the club’s or the fans.

He left us with a sleeping investor who, whilst making a few quid each year, has no interest in sweating his investment.

That’s no a bad place to be when you compare the spiv epl.

I borrowed to save the club (thanks co op) and is the best loan I’ve ever been saddled with.

  28. Pogmathonyahun aka Laird of the Smiles on

SFTB, we all know that disassembly/reconstruction is an inevitability of playing in the premier division of the SPFL but if it is carried out at a rapid rate, say losing your best players at the end of every season, not only will the manager get miffed so will the support and I suspect that this may already be the case with dwindling numbers at home games. We Celtic fans still expect to have some sort of success in Europe, yes I know this is an unrealistic expectation, but selling club ‘favourites’ on a regular basis pisses off the support.

Just my opinion for what it is worth.

  29. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

JF’s Haircut. For me no sale @ £7m.

I’ve been frank in the past about James’ shortcomings. For me he still has a long way to go before becoming a top player…… but ….. he scored a goal in August that earned us more than £7m and could do again.

Times have moved on. On the world stage £15m is the starting price for an average football haddy. (Alex Song went for 15m euros two years ago).

Single millions transfer fees are now the going rate for good players from “wee leagues”.

    If offered lets say no.

BTW – anyone got photos of the frontage? (Of Celtic Park obviously ! )
