Smell of blood on the brown brogues

383

Read this morning that the Tynecastle pitch is 19-years-old.  Celtic’s is less than three-years-old.  Hearts have responded quickly to criticisms of their surface and will have a new pitch laid before the end of the month.  Having a top quality football pitch in Scotland isn’t a cheap business.  Celtic pay £500k per year in running, maintenance and depreciation costs for the sunlamp system which keeps the grass as alive as it is.  On top of that there’s costs for ground staff, under-soil heating and various other equipment.

And more at Lennoxtown, of course.  You wouldn’t believe the costs involved in running a football operation at a club with facilities the size of Celtic Park and Lennoxtown.  Modern football in massive stadiums isn’t something you can carry out on a shoestring.

On the Newco debacle at Dundee yesterday; this wouldn’t have happened under Mike Ashely’s watch, whether you regard that particular scenario as malevolent or benevolent. With an active link to Ashley, Newco would benefit from professionalism in the boardroom and better players in the dressing room.  What we’re now enjoying is 100% the work of Dave King, who during his electioneering phase promised so much.

Instead of an Ashley appointed CEO, manager and selection of players from Newcastle’s secondary squad, they’ve sacked their manager and given the guy who put the cones out for the youth team responsibility to finish above Aberdeen. The upshot of this is that the players they need to dig them out of this mess – like Kenny Miller who is not being offered a new contract – know that the decks will be cleared for the new manager.  This is a perfect way to demotivate a squad.

If Celtic (or Aberdeen) win the Scottish Cup, the top four Premiership places qualify for Europe, which would be reassuring for Newco, were it not for St Johnstone, who sit six points adrift from them. But unlike Newco, St Johnstone only have to play Celtic one more time this season.  Saints manager Tommy Wright will smell blood on the brown brogues.  Don’t bet against him.

The message below is from Vmham, who is one of the brave souls cycling from Celtic Park to Lisbon in May.  Please get involved with this magnificent project if you can, there is more information on the MyDonate page linked below:

“CQN’ers, as you may know I’ve been training most of last year for an epic cycle from Celtic park  to Estadio Nacional in Lisbon 25th May 2017.  We wanted to mark the 50th anniversary of the “first British team” to win the European cup, Celtic done it in style with a team whose 11 players were born within a 30ml radius of Celtic park.  As a CQN’er I was involved in the bringing home Kano campaign way back and have contributed financially to support CQN’s website and still do. If anyone would like to sponsor me you can by clicking here on MyDonate page, thanks folks and see you at the party in Lisbon :>)

Instead of throwing your usual mantra of “Facts, please. Not opinion” why don’t you try the same?

Your reply is one of the great What If… scenarios that you regularly throw in here. Why don’t YOU check Celtic’s legal requirements in such cases?

There is NO requirement for anyone to offer the police such information upon demand. People are still entitled to the full protection of the law, innocence presumed, etc.

Another example of the “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear” garbage put about by those who really should know better, but only find out the hard way-like so many-that the law might not be on their side after all.

A wee bit of a philosophical number here:

If a song is not sung, does it still exist as a song?

I’m not saying it isn’t sung. I’m saying I haven’t heard it sung. If it isn’t sung at all it’s still a song. Probably a folk song.

The point is though it doesn’t help our cause if people deny the existence of something that does exist.

I stated no facts in my post to HamiltonTim who claimed that the Celtic Board passed on to the police the addresses of some Celtic supporters.

I asked a series of questions precisely because I don`t know facts , but I do know how the law works.

If the police ask Celtic to provide certain information , Celtic would unquestionably take legal advice and would undoubtedly follow it.

What in the above is an unreasonable assumption ?

The alternative is to assume that the Board are in league with the police against Celtic supporters.

    I don`t believe that.

There are plenty of sayings, writings, songs, etc, which are proscribed but are a matter of historical record. Yes,they exist, but only in the past.

I’ve honestly never heard the song anywhere. Suggesting it is still sung at all-much less widely-and using it to defend their own moronic behaviour,is as stupid as calling 21st C Germans a bunch of Nazis.

Section 89(2) of the Police Act 1996 makes it an offence for a person to resist or wilfully obstruct a police constable acting in the execution of his duty, or to do likewise in relation to a person assisting the constable in the execution of his duty. It is the latest in a line of statutory provisions which has criminalized such behaviour: see, for example, s.2 of the Prevention of Crimes Amendment Act 1885. The wilful obstruction offence consists of three elements: there must be an obstruction; that obstruction must be “wilful”; and at the time that it occurs, the police constable must have been acting in the execution of his duty. In the absence of a statutory definition of any of the three elements it has proved necessary for the courts to determine their meaning. Thus, for example, in Hinchcliffe v. Sheldon [1955] 1 WLR 1207, it was held that to obstruct a police constable involved making it more difficult for the constable to carry out his duty. This meaning of “obstruct” in the present context was later affirmed in the leading case of Rice v. Connolly [1966] 2 QB 414, where it was necessary for the court to consider whether refusing to cooperate with a police constable, in the sense of not answering his questions and refusing to accompany him to a police box, made Rice guilty of the offence.

Is the Data Protection Act of any significance in this case ?

This was not about data but about individuals being sought by the police.

    ___________________________________________

The crux of the matter here is that Celtic hold personal data on season ticket holders; under the Data Protection Act that data can only be used for the specific purpose for which it is held and can only be shared without the individuals consent.

Is it permissible for Celtic to provide that Data to Police Scotland under the Act? The jury should be out on that one; it’s not as Celtic have provided the information without, it seems, being compelled to.

IMHO Police Scotland should have to make their case in the court to compel Celtic to release the data if it is in fact legally obliged to do. To my knowledge, that hasn’t happened yet!

  23. I grew up in Coatbridge and have attended Celtic Park for over 40 years. I’ve never ever heard Celtic supporters singing a song about the Ibrox disaster – either inside the stadium or at any impromptu or organised sing-song. And believe me, we had plenty of community singing in Coatbridge. That doesn’t mean a song doesn’t exist, but it’s clear to me that this song is never heard and indeed for some it is unheard of – first I knew about it was reading it on here.

Let’s focus on the the real issue. This is being used by some to excuse the huns’ sectarian behaviour and singing that we see and hear week-in week-out. There’s really no comparison. I do not know why the people on Radio Clyde can’t simply state that the Tommy Burns song is moronic, sectarian etc. and condemn it. The fact that they immediately look to find a comparison tells you all you need to know. It’s not just the morons sing a song about TB that need to take a look at themselves – the media who casually condone and excuse it that should be hanging their heads in shame.
