Smith, the SFA, Everton and EBTs

1813

Walter Smith was not named by BBC’s Mark Daly as a recipient of an Employee Benefit Trust in the recent documentary, however, before this matter is put to bed I expect more names to emerge.  As soon as Smith makes himself available to a proper journalist he will be asked:

Did he receive EBT loan payments from Rangers?

If so:

Did he repay those loans or hold his cash while the club ran out of money and died?

Was he in receipt of a letter from Rangers confirming he was not required to repay?

Did his then employers, the Scottish FA, know he was perhaps receiving money from a member club while employed by them?

Are SFA employees contractually inhibited from taking payments from a member club or required to inform the SFA board of any payments received by a member club?

Did his earlier employers, Everton FC, know if he was receiving money from another club while employed by them?

Was Smith contractually inhibited from taking payments from another club or required to inform Everton of any payments received from another club?

As manager of Rangers, was he involved in negotiations with players who had EBTs or was he another one who concentrated on administrative and legislative duties?

Was he one of the men SFA president, Campbell Ogilvie, suggested failed to reveal side contracts to the Rangers board?

Rangers’ liquidators, BDO, will forensically pour over most of these questions, so Smith’s answers will be verifiable.

No one who played an active part in Rangers EBT scandal will come out of this clean.  The ramifications multiply if Rangers were discretely paying any senior employee of another club.

I simply cannot imagine the justification for a member club discretely paying a senior employee of the SFA.  Frankly, it would be beyond every Celtic fan’s most paranoid fantasies.  I am sure Mr Smith will quickly and easily be able to reassure everyone.

An interesting twist in Smith’s bid for the assets of Rangers is that if he is to inherit Green’s application for a SFA licence and take a controlling interest in the club, Green is obliged to do due diligence on Smith to determine if he is a Fit and Proper person.  Perhaps Mr Green can use the above as his due diligence questionnaire.

One final thought.  In the unlikely event that it is established that one senior SFA employee was receiving discrete payments from Rangers, we need an immediate and independent inquiry to establish how many others received such payments and what they were for.

As a matter of some urgency I would recommend Stewart Regan brings himself up to speed on this one. I am sure his president is banging the table as you read this insisting the chief executive gets to the bottom of this. It’s not as though he is heavily conflicted and the SFA is in dire need of an independent president to steady the ship.

My friends in Celtic, this just got interesting.

  1. Celtic + it’s supporters clubs should in no way be associated with Park’s of Hamilton from next season onwards

And meanwhile, the sfa can take time out of its thorough investigation of the biggest scandal in sporting history to make sure they give Pat Fenlon a good slap.

Uefa needs to step in and reform our corrupt footballing governance.

They are mired too deep in a festering swamp of their own making.

I don’t know much about this new club called Sevco 5088, but I don’t like them. (thumbsup)

  4. What are our thoughts on Aberdeen declaring their NO vote for Newclub. Surely Celtic should announce they will be voting for sporting integrity also.

Why was Green sitting in front of Boards advertising Tennents, JJB, Umbro and others when they have no contracts with his new company (its not even a fitba team so far) at yesterdays Press Confrence?

Re Celtic and voicing an opinion on the NewCo vote. I think it’s a case of we have to let the Other 10 think it’s their own idea to vote against accepting the NewCo. If we come out and express an opinion I can see the Other 10 thinking “we’re not going to do what Celtic tell us”. So best for Celtic to maintain (a dignified !!) silence IMO.

Does anyone know when the liquidation of the RFC appears in the Public Notices section of the newspapers?

  13. From the CSA site.

Just how many times can the Rangers fans swap sides?

Have the Rangers fans finally got someone they like? Or to put it another way, have they finally got someone who acts and behaves the same way they do?

They have jumped ship so many times since February 14th that I think I have lost count of the number of people they thought were the right ones to take Rangers forward.

After the Murray cheating years they found one of their own in Craig Whyte, he was definitely the man for Rangers, after all he was a Rangers man, and he was certainly well versed in avoiding paying debts.

But when he took the club into administration the real fun started. The Blue Knights were the new hero’s, after all they were Rangers men, but unfortunately they had little or no money.

The baton then fell to Bill Miller, problem here; he’s not a Rangers man, so when he does his homework properly he pulls out.

Step forward the Blue Knights again, but they still have little or no money, even with the backing of Brian Kennedy.

Then out of the blue (should that be out of the green) comes a guy called Charles Green, another non Rangers man, but that doesn’t matter because he talks a good game and has lots of backers and money.

The CVA is rejected and he has secured a deal to buy Rangers as a Newco for £5.5 million, I guess that was always the plan anyway.

Then the real Blue Knight arrives on a white charger, the bold Walter, Mr Integrity himself, a real Rangers man, he must be he was involved in the EBT’s during his tenure as manager of Rangers.

All bets are off now, everyone needs to move aside and let Walter and his gang take over, just exactly where were Walter and his gang during the last four months?

Well it’s pretty obvious, they are Rangers men alright, but they had absolutely no intentions of paying the debts of their cheating club.

That’s why him and his gang of Jim Mc Coll and Douglas Park were not making any serious attempt to buy the club and , they were only interested in a debt free Newco.

I sincerely hope at least one good thing comes out of this sorry mess, and that is that Celtic FC gets themselves a new Bus Company and the same goes for any of our supporters clubs who still use Parks of Hamilton.

  18. Sweden is so wrong on so many levels…

Politicians in Sweden have called for men to pee sitting down when using the Sörmland County Council toilets.

A motion has been put forward by the Left Party, stating that men should be banned from standing up while relieving themselves, according to The Local.

Representative Viggo Hansen hopes the toilets will become genderless as a result of this move, adding to Sveriges Television: “We want to give men the option of going into a clean toilet.”

The Left Party claims that getting men to sit down will improve hygiene as there will be less stray urine splashing out of the bowl.

  19. The huns are all now saying that green is bad as all he wants to do is make money out of the deal. However 18 years ago a wee guy invested his own money and said he wanted to double his investment in 5 years and walk away, he actually made 10 times his original investment and is now held by sensible celtic fans as a genius and one of the most important people in our history.

    Strange that hey?

    They have done so already.

PL announced they would uphold the integrity of our game, as this was paramount. Green Brigade also renewed their season tickets following meeting with the club on how they would vote. That is good enough for me.

It would be folly for the board to get involved any further, we would end up being the headline.

  21. I hope he remembers the customer is always right…

Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has made a plea for the SPL clubs to be given time and room to decide how best to deal with the Rangers newco crisis.

Thompson confirmed he will be sounding out the Tannadice support next week ahead of the as yet unscheduled vote on whether or not to allow the SPL share to be transferred to Charles Green’s new company.

He expressed the hope that the representatives of all top-flight teams will be given breathing space to consider what is surely the greatest predicament to have ever faced the Scottish game.

Thompson said: ”Whilst we now have greater clarity on the current situation at Rangers, we are at a major crossroads for Scottish football and, significantly, the future of many clubs.

”It is appropriate that the SPL shareholders and the individual boards are allowed time to reflect and privately discuss this matter in the best interests of Scottish football and each SPL member club.

”Before making any decisions, Dundee United will continue our dialogue with our supporters’ representative groups and listen to our customers’ views.

”The club will be making no further statements regarding the current situation at Rangers until the aforementioned discussions have taken place.”
