Snout in trough required, Champions League frustrations

768

The frustration at the news Derk Boerrigter is injured, again, and will miss another important Champions League game, is enormous.  Derk was a big part of our summer signing strategy but he came with a caveat concerning his propensity to suffer injury.

We have seen only flashes of him since he joined from Ajax in the summer.  His opportunities to exploit his undoubted speed in SPFL games will be limited by opponents tendency to defend deep, denying him space to run into, making Champions League games all the more important to his season.

Our other pace player, James Forrest, will surely come into sharp focus for the visit of Ajax on Tuesday.

I see Alasdair Johnston is expressing concern that Our Hero is still pulling the strings at Ibrox!  I never thought of that!

Let’s see…. He is a director of Sevco 5088 Ltd, the firm which had an irrevocable right to buy the assets of liquidated Rangers, he issued a pre-action letter to exercise those rights, there was in independent ‘inquiry’ which completely failed to investigate control of Sevco 5088 Ltd, then he went quiet. Why are we always a day behind the news?

Does that mean he got bored and went away, or is he conducting his business in private?  I am sure it’s the latter but Craig Whyte is the least of Johnston’s concerns when it comes to who is able to pull strings at Ibrox.  All the action is offstage.

Speaking about what is happening offstage, whenever Rangers International’s advisers confirm how the company can appoint sufficient executives to be compliant with AIM requirements, they will need a new chief executive.

Going by recent (and not so recent) trends they will need someone with their snout constantly in the trough, with impeccable Rangers credentials, with their snout constantly in the trough, who is currently available for work, with their snout constantly in the trough, who has previously worked in the game and with their snout constantly in the trough.

If only they could find another genuine fan who would be prepared to do whatever necessary in return for a remarkable contract.  Can’t think of anyone.

Wait a minute………

Thanks to everyone who participated in Show Your Hand yesterday.

Part and parcel of the game. If anyone had done what Brown had done to a Celtic player we would be applauding this decision. It was sneaky and stupid.

    !!Bada Bing!!

It’s not harsh. It’s the laws of the game. The foul in the first place for me was unnecessary.

It’s going to cost us. We have lost our captain and centre midfieler for 3 massive games.

Brown has form for this. He missed a lot of Rangers games before they died through suspension. I thought he had learned. Very disappointed in our captain.

Delighted to read of the successful acquisition of Dunfermline FC by their fans’ group.

Doubly do as it removes the corrupt hand of Masterson.

Historically, there was always a good relationship between Celtic and the Pars, both at club and supporter levels.

This was spoiled a few years ago, during the reign of Masterson and the two Jimmy’s.

I would like to think that the respect that was once there can be rekindled and furthermore, I would like to see our support build respectful alliances with the support of other clubs.

Allowing for normal healthy rivalry, of course.

As well as making spectating a more enjoyable experience, all round, if we seek to effect the changes that Scottish football needs, we must have all clubs’ fans pulling in the same direction.

  9. I know Awe Naw! Why is he on that wonderful part of Penguin though? In defence of Morrissey, he also has a fine sense of humour. I also do retain fondness for The Smiths. Still, CQN’s Morrissey may wish to chuck me out of a plane anyway.

    Thomthetim, agreed about Dunfermline.

Tallybhoy, that was a moving post. I wonder if your father supported Celtic or an Italian side.

  10. PFAyr and others – no surprises about the army show at Ibrox. The armed forces, like the ‘Rangers’ in all their guises are above the normal rules and regs.

Celtic supporters getting arrested for singing songs about guys who gave their own lives 32 years ago – it’s a bit subversive. Anti-fascists? Subversive and probably left wing. Lift them.

This by the way is not confined to Celtic supporters in this country. There is a connection between how the GB members and other Celtic supporters associated with them are treated and the recent revelations about the extent to which ordinary citizens, but particularly those involved with progressive causes are being monitored and hunted down. Have a read at this:

or this on what the authorities regard as ‘Domestic Extremists’:

    http://www.monbiot.com/2011/01/17/the-real-domestic-extremists/

Well referenced articles by the way, not the rant of a mad conspiracy theorist.

I don’t think Celtic supporters should sing Rebel songs at fitba matches, but the rush to condemn, demonise and criminalise them for doing so is just one more example of the sanitisation of football and the suppression of radical views. And meanwhile as the Armed forces continue to recruit 16 year old boy soldiers and sailors to prosecute their increasingly futile wars, it’s OK to sing and chant about killing ‘fenians’.

The new media has done a great job in the world of Celtic. Some of you should occasionally apply the rationale behind the work of Paul67 et al and apply the logic to the economic world. Because economics is where it’s at. Any hint that a collective group might question economic inequality, social injustice, the powers that be – they’ll be targetted.

  11. Oh well looking forward to the game at the weekend. I’ll be watching it in O’Sheas in Manchester. Would recommend it to any other exiled tim down here.

  12. i thought the SB incident was thrashed to death in the aftermath of the game and for some time after.

Bottom line…commit the crime.. do the time.

OK.. appeal the 3 games but still going to be a ban; maybe 2.

    Forgot about Yorston.

I knew there was someone else in the frame.

I seem to recall the DFC fans singing Happy Birthday , Celtic, at our Centenary.

Or have I got it wrong again ?

Off for a leisurely power walk along Carrickfinn beach.

  15. By the way let me give you a small example of what I mean. The Socialist Party office in Belfast was surrounded by cops and jeeps on the day of the G8 protest. I am not a member of said party but a friend of mine who is told me there were about a dozen SP activists leaving the building to go on the demo. The cops were there for them when they were coming back too. A party with absolutely no history of violent protest. Meanwhile, UVF inspired ‘fleg protestors’ get escorts in to town on a weekly basis, riot, attack police and generally cause mayhem for months and get….. em, well, asked if they could possibly see their way clear to stopping it for a wee while.

One group wants economic justice the other wants a flag on top of a building. One is peaceful, the other threatens and uses violence. The modus operandi is never the issue – it’s the aim of your group that brings the trouble.

This is bigger than Celtic. And it’s time we all stood shoulder to shoulder with those being criminalised.

I don’t really care that young, brain free buffoons in the Sevconian Corner don’t get scooped en masse and criminalised, but if no one ever tries to lead them out of the sectarian fog they inhabit then in the fog they will remain. Rather a lot of the Sevco minded will need to tell their own people that they need to move on. Both in Scotland and here in Ireland. But I am yet to see anyone brave enough yet. David Ervine made a start but his old pal Billy Hutchinson and others don’t have it – although credit to many good folk on loyalist interfaces who actively work with nationalist leaders to tackle sectarian behaviours in local areas. In Scotland I don’t think the Loyalist community has realised there is a ceasefire, a peace process or a life without sectarian hatred.

    Rant over.

Well the odds are stacking higher and higher against us having European football at Paradise after Christmas what with injuries and now Broonies 3 game ban.Mind you we have often been at our best in adversity so bring it on.H.H.

  17. Jon O’Neill – yes, George Monbiot. I have no idea if he is a milionaire but you can check for yourself here what his income is as he is open enough to publish his ‘Registry of Interests’ here:

    http://www.monbiot.com/registry-of-interests/

I don’t think he is. But whether he is or is not does not make what he writes untrue. The facts in the articles are just that. You can check them, cross reference them – you don’t of course have to agree with the conclusions he draws from them, but the facts stand.

  18. ….PFAyr, a recruitment drive from the Army at the moment?

Targeting a certain section of the population?

  20. Tallybhoy – Sincere condolences to you and your family. Comforting to hear that the family were together in the last week. It’s times like this when living abroad really sucks.

Scott Brown’s 3 match ban does seem a tad harsh. Not sure what the standard punishment is but I would have thought 1 game would suffice for the nature of the offence. I am not sure that we will miss him much in Europe. He is more of an SPL player. More concerned that Lustig and Mathews are both struggling. Both can do a job at this level.

  23. Robert, thanks. I heard he was but didn’t know for certain. Hence the question.

First of the gang, did Morrissey not request to be on it? He has good taste if so. However he should have been refused. Some lyrics are wildely witty but others are condescending dross.

  24. garygillespieshamstring on

Brownie probably due a yellow for the initial foul and a straight red for stupidity in my opinion. A one game ban for the red card with the yellow being added to his tally of bookings would have seemed reasonable to me. Any additional matches missed would then be a result of another misdemeanour in subsequent game. That would make the scale of punishment more appropriate to the level of the offence.

I think the best we can hope for is that the additional 2 game ban gets cut to one.

  25. iPaddy McCourt Supports Wee Oscar on

A three match ban for Brown for that incident is an absolute piece of nonsense and will surely be reduced on appeal.

  26. First of the gang. Please don’t place Morrissey in the same bracket as Andy Warhol. If Andy is the equivalent of an Aiden McGeady(not a Jinky mind you) then Morrissey is a Bobby Petta. No cockney rhythmic allusions intended.
