So many lessons played out against St Johnstone

417

There was much to love in yesterday’s win at St Johnstone, so many lessons played out, it was a clear opportunity to learn a bit about the game.

On Tuesday last week, before Leigh Griffiths had kicked a competitive ball this season, I wrote, “Leigh is one of the most natural goal scorers we have seen at Celtic this century.  He has natural pace, confidence and an attitude that will not easily be subverted”, and that his campaign “could start as early as Thursday, if we need a goal late in the game.”

In July, after he was left at home while the squad travelled to France, I wrote, “My money is on him scoring the goal that seals the 10.”  He is that good a striker you can hang yourself out there and know he will perform.

The header was a dream; watch how he arced his back before thundering the ball inches inside the post.  It was an exceptional finish, from an exceptional goal scorer.  If you think he is the only player in the squad with baggage, you were not watching carefully enough yesterday, but he has the talent that could be the difference between first and second in the league, and he wants to be here.

I don’t think I have seen a player play on after being scythed in two, as Patryk Klimala was yesterday.  Mark him up as another with talent, who wants to be here.  Tom Rogic did his part too, but how consequential was Scott Brown’s arrival?

Without Brown on the field, Kristopher Ajer would not have been advanced enough to do a jink on the edge of the St Johnstone area, making space for Hatem Elhamed’s cross.  Nor would Shane Duffy be as high up the field to play a short pass to Klimala on the edge of the area.

After the game, Neil Lennon spoke about those throwing stats at his captain, you can see he’s been affected.  Suggestions that the manager does not see what tens of thousands of fans see is ludicrous. Stats are a great tool, but they need to be interpreted correctly; some of the best defenders hardly ever touch the ball or tackle, but they can still control a game, while some captains impose a gameplan.  Neither attribute shows up well on the stats.

Maybe see you later.

Big Jimmy – from previous thread, my Knee or ligaments on inside of knee are killing me so much that my back and hips are sore and I had to have large amounts of Lager yesterday to cope with said pain. :)

    Hope you are well sir.

Cheers mate…I am okay. I have been “Drying OOT” after my 3 day Beer Frenzy last week, so Ive been at home since 10pm on Friday night….Nae Drink.

You should hire one of those wee Japanese Wummin to walk Naked all over your body…its the best kind of massage…Oriental style LOL

    ……….

I was also in The Jungle when Francie MacGarvey scored v St Mirren that day…it was fairly busy and the ” CHEER” when THAT Goal was scored is something that still sends shivers down my spine…and many other goals obviously.

    18,000 in attendance ?…..My Erse.

I want to think Ryan celebrated with a fist clench and an inward roar but having looked at Bada`s link a few times I find it strange that he didn`t show more happiness/enthusiasm/relief/pleasure.

  3. DELANEYS DUNKY /HOT SMOKED

Let’s not forget that the game wasn’t won. We had time to score a second so they had time to equalise. There are a range of emotions and to me it looked like relief but still had a job to do.

You might be right….I guess we can only speculate and go on performances.

  4. So the Huns are selling TV Rights to India ?

TV Rights that they do NOT own ?

If so, I can see many of the Hun supporters following suit and selling their Hooses to ” whoever ” ?

I can only imagine that all “The Cooncils” would be raging !

    LOL

I go more with GeeBee’s theory.

No matter what, I bet the professional that he is, Ryan was delighted with the 3 points.

  6. Huns fail to flog any of their “assets” and so have just announced more equity confetti.

    Keep the lights on…..

  7. Ryan Christie ?

IF he didnt celebrate maybe we shouldnt try and guess why not as I distinctly remember Murdo MacLeod scoring what proved to be ” The Winner” against the Huns on a horrible rain soaked day at Celtic Park to make it 3-2 to The Celts.

He scored at the “Huns End” and just stood with maybe a one handed salute for a second or two as his team mates rushed to congratulate him on the touchline.

I was again in the Jungle that day, and while we were all very happy to have won, some of us ( and other Celtic fans) over the next day or so, wondered why he didnt “Celebrate” ?

He had just RAN about 50 yards or more near the end of the game on a very heavy pitch, to get on the end of a FANTASTIC Celtic passing move that had started about 20 yards from our goal…to stick the Ball in the Huns net…..SUPERB !

A day or so after the game Murdo claimed that he was ” TOO KNACKERED” too celebrate properly, and everyone accepted his explanation LOL.

However, Ryan Christie ( for obvious reasons) can NOT make the same claim during/after yesterdays game.

    LOL

For now however, i am happy to give Ryan the benefit of the doubt…maybe he did pump a fist, but was wary about keeping some degree of concentration for the remaining time left ?

  8. KA so far up the park — it is called 90th minute desperation.

PK — the guy who tackled him should have been given a red card.

Have we made any mention of the foul in any of our media utterances?

We have no fight on the park and even less off it.

Regarding LG he is a big talent but he needs a lot of support.

He needs a social worker as well as a coach so we need to support him.

We should not be putting him in spotlight in any way — some reflective silence would do us all good.

  9. You can quite clearly see Ryan clench his fist when the goal is scored….People will see what they want to see…

  10. The following four Celtic SPFL games have been rescheduled and here are the new dates:

    Sunday, October 25 Aberdeen v Celtic Kick-off 3.00pm

    Sunday, November 8 Motherwell v Celtic Kick-off 3.00pm

    Sunday, December 6 Celtic v St Johnstone Kick-off 3.00pm

    Sunday, December 13 Celtic v Kilmarnock Kick-off 3.00pm

  11. How many penalties have the TFOD2 been given this season?

I have heard mention of 8 but not sure if this is correct.

My late FIL — DU supporter — always asked who missed the penalty if the TFOD/2 didn’t score.

Story from the 60’s and 70’s but gaining prominence now.

  12. Also why all the comments about RC after the first goal yesterday?

Interesting issue but not in the Top Twenty of questions after yesterday’s games?

Just like the comments that DT should have seen red for his tackle yesterday.

More things to talk about than that.

  13. I see the bbc scotland website magic calculator is working its magic again.

Just now on the transfer window update page they have described Celtic’s big money signing this window of Albian Ajeti as a 4.5 million buy.

This will be the same source who continue to describe Ryan Kent’s last summer signing from Liverpool third team to Rangers as a 7 million or 7.5 million.

Officially Liverpool f.c announced it as 6.5 million but do not let the TRUTH get in the way of some moonbeams.

You only have to look a little into detail at the scottish press to see the slight of hand and magician tricks they continue to pull to make our opponents look stronger and us weaker.

Between them, the sportscence highlights editing and bbc shortbread and of course the proved corrupt anti catholic referee’s they are continuing to make the club formerly known as rangers shine in the most positive light possible.

When hard facts and truth show they are infact an incredibly unsuccesful tribute act to an organisation who went to the wall cheating on an industrial scale.

So glad I do not live in scotland…and huge credit to you guys who do and have to deal with this every day.

  14. The BBC Shortbread sports department — who in the main pray towards Govan — are all just at it with the sly digs and the cheapshots and the fake news and the wee wind ups.

It is all they have left — just let them get on with it.

The more we ignore them the harder they will try until the elastic snaps and we can get them for something big.

  15. CELTIC Football Club can confirm 20-year-old forward Jack Aitchison has signed for English Championship club Barnsley on a three-year deal.

  16. I assume then that we’ve given up on Doughty – for now. Laxalt on loan for a year then Doughty on a free in the summer maybe?

Disappointed that Jack Aitchison has signed a permanent deal. Thought he would have made it at Celtic. Good luck to the lad in Yorkshire.

    Celtic 3 Rangers 2 – 1982 October

Paul McStay “old firm ” debut at 18 years old. He was brilliant, scored, some shots, but even more he dominated the midfield. Winning goal was notable for it starting from provan defending a corner as celtic hit them o the break shoooting into the rangers end.

. Other interest Bonnar maybe had his best game against them making several saves. This was only my 3rd year of going to these games, and on this occasion I was in the front stand so that I could take my girlfriend, when we got there I had never seen such a huge away crowd at Celtic Park.

The hordes of huns was just unreal, I think they bust a gate open from inside and thousands got in.

Official attendance was 60,000, but for sure there was many many more.

After the game I got back into central with my girlfriend, and the Port bhoys including my younger brothers , maybe about 30 of them in total had a full ring of police around them as hundreds of huns kept attacking them.

anyways, Murdo was a hun skelper for sure, how many against them ?

4-2 game, 4-4 draw at ibrox, this winner in the 3-2, league cup final in 82, another at ibrox.

If you want to see the Murdo goal only go right to the end.

    Review

Teenage prodigy and midfield maestro Paul McStay “shines like a lighthouse” in the words of manager Billy McNeill in a memorable Old Firm win in front of a record crowd for Britain’s league season.

Rangers led twice after bad Celtic defending on a wild and windy day and the turning point was when Prytz’s thunder bolt shot in the second half came off the bar and into Bonner’s arms.

Celtic equalised after McGarvey scored after brilliant play from young Paul McStay.

With only three minutes remaining Celtic grabbed the winner when they broke quickly after a Rangers corner. Nicholas cleverly held the ball and releeased it perfectly to MacLeod who ran 50 yards before scoring with a powerful shot.

MacLeod was so exhausted he could hardly raise his arms in celebration.

  20. Delighted if we bring in quality and quality does not depart……………..

    Things will settle down………

It’ll be interesting to see how scoddland’s finest choose to portray Our Club’s business……

Will they emphasise the retention of talent in the Scottish game and the introduction of beneficial quality to a declining sporting environment or will they feel the need to temper Celtica Good News with apparent failures………???

And will they still pander to the trumped-up horlicks of mega business deals at The Dilapidated Edwardian Toilet Block?????

cracking podcast on James Kelly 1887-1892

*cheers AT thanks for that. Although there are still plenty of Kellys in the Renton and Vale of Leven I’m not sure if he has any family left there although his brother Joe who ran the pub we allegedly gave him as a signing on fee and was called by the oulder Tims Kellys is laid tae rest up in the Vale of Leven Cemetery.

I was on a Renton site recently and someone posted photies of some of the old streets there, in one a response came from someone that their family lived there and Celtic owned it. That was probably James Kelly.

The allegations by the Leith Louts that we stole James from them are ludicrous tae as he admitted tae not wanting to leave his local side and at the time was serving his time as a joiner.

The silver tongued James Glass was sent tae Renton with the instructions “No Kelly, No Keltic”, in other words don’t come back without him.

Renton at that time had a huge Irish population as a result of the migration of poor souls trying to escape the remnants of the potato ethnic cleansing and the prospect of good employment at the local printing and dye works which at the time was one of the best places to live and work in the country.

Although the industry employed mostly women, the men worked in the local farms or public works. It is rumoured that Irishmen built the Renton Road which runs from the village to Dumbarton and to this day is still in use.

Anyway, James da David was a member of the Dumbarton Branch of the Irish Land League and would often walk intae the town for meetings along the banks of the River Leven.

So with the choice of playing for a new Irish club who had charitable links as well as a lot more money than an apprentice joiner was getting, James was enticed.

Incidentally Sir Furious’s paternal grampa was also a Rentonian, they only moved tae Govan as he was convalescing in Bellahouston as a result of wounds received in WWI and his Dumbarton born granny wanted to be near him, it seems he also followed the Celts.

  24. Some facts about Ryan Christie , a Celtic supporting team player who gives 100% for his teammates and for the club , and whose dad ( like every other Celtic players dad ) thinks he’s good enough to play in England , to those who don’t appreciate him GIRUY ;)

  25. ffs packy x2, it is the same game that cooper loops a header over him, his fault.

my old memory, i said i was in the front stand over towards the corner flag so i got a view of his saves in the 2nd half.

  26. If Sevco were to sell Sevco merchandise to India, I would understand but the other SPFL Clubs are NOT owned by Sevco so what allows them ie Sevco, to sell a product that by necessity involves `items` which they do not own?

NB I do not see any problems as regards the officials in these games. Ownership there is not in question :-)

    PS is the `story ` a fact?

    Saint Stivs,

Talking of Murdo, I remember he got 1 chopped of in a 3-3 game at Celtic Park. Roughly around 81 or 82 from memory. 30 yard screamer, think Frank McGarvey was lying sparkled 20 yards out

  28. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Whenever I watch Ryan Christie play it looks on occasion that he is trying too hard, desperate to please everybody, mainly Manager, Fans and Dad, probably in that order. If he showed any remorse after Leigh scored its probably because he wanted to be the hero, the guy that scored the winner, and it wasn’t to be.

I’m sure he’s a good guy and a really important player for us.

  29. onenightinlisbon on

None of us know what Ryan Christie is thinking but he has certainly been poor with his corners/free kicks. Let’s hoe he is back to himself after the break. A good hunskelper in the making perhaps…
