So many lessons played out against St Johnstone

417

There was much to love in yesterday’s win at St Johnstone, so many lessons played out, it was a clear opportunity to learn a bit about the game.

On Tuesday last week, before Leigh Griffiths had kicked a competitive ball this season, I wrote, “Leigh is one of the most natural goal scorers we have seen at Celtic this century.  He has natural pace, confidence and an attitude that will not easily be subverted”, and that his campaign “could start as early as Thursday, if we need a goal late in the game.”

In July, after he was left at home while the squad travelled to France, I wrote, “My money is on him scoring the goal that seals the 10.”  He is that good a striker you can hang yourself out there and know he will perform.

The header was a dream; watch how he arced his back before thundering the ball inches inside the post.  It was an exceptional finish, from an exceptional goal scorer.  If you think he is the only player in the squad with baggage, you were not watching carefully enough yesterday, but he has the talent that could be the difference between first and second in the league, and he wants to be here.

I don’t think I have seen a player play on after being scythed in two, as Patryk Klimala was yesterday.  Mark him up as another with talent, who wants to be here.  Tom Rogic did his part too, but how consequential was Scott Brown’s arrival?

Without Brown on the field, Kristopher Ajer would not have been advanced enough to do a jink on the edge of the St Johnstone area, making space for Hatem Elhamed’s cross.  Nor would Shane Duffy be as high up the field to play a short pass to Klimala on the edge of the area.

After the game, Neil Lennon spoke about those throwing stats at his captain, you can see he’s been affected.  Suggestions that the manager does not see what tens of thousands of fans see is ludicrous. Stats are a great tool, but they need to be interpreted correctly; some of the best defenders hardly ever touch the ball or tackle, but they can still control a game, while some captains impose a gameplan.  Neither attribute shows up well on the stats.

Maybe see you later.

  1. Maybe Christie is no fan of Griff?

Infact whilst we are speculating Rogic never exactly looked like he was about to head into an orgasm eitherwhen the ball hit the net.

Or in reality maybe Christie ‘expected’ the goal and is also selfish enough to be gutted that the correct pass to him was missed…therefore he wasn’t happy.

I like Christie..he has been a terrific player.

Be very pleased when the window shuts tonight and him and french eddy are still in the hoops

  2. Saint Stivs

Some tackle from McStay for the first goal. Oddly just yesterday I came across my away top from that season. Even more oddly, despite me being 20 then, it appears to have belonged to a very slight 6 year old child.

    And Bonner. Total choob.

  3. Christie’s form hasn’t been great and his set-pieces have been especially poor.

However, I don’t think it’s from a lack of effort – as somebody else mentioned if anything he seems to be trying too hard. We have so many options in midfield right now and maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea for him to have a wee rest…recharge before coming back to make the impact that he has done in the past.

I certainly wouldn’t want him to go without an adequate replacement coming in as it’d make us weaker. And with only a few hours left of the window and a replacement not on the cards, he and our other “big” players need to stay.

  4. Talking of Ryan ChristIe, please remember that as things stand he is currently joint leader of the CQN Player Of The Year survey. Although that might change just after 10pm tonight. keep the emails coming CQNPOTY@GMAIL.COM

  5. So another transfer window is about to close [5 hours left]….with our illustrious neighbours still unable to cash in on a lucrative transfer fee recieved.

Despite the best efforts of their pals in the media it appears nobody has had any appetite for multi milion pound deal for the columbian kris boyd.

Unless something happens really quick tonight they are looking at 2021 before they even get a chance of some decent money.

How they are paying the wages they are paying and still standing is beyond me.

    Does not make sense.

Their last taste of champions league money and a huge transfer fee for a player must be around 8 years ago in the guise of their previous club.[2012?]

  6. lets all do the huddle on

at least now im working from home so going to my scratcher later i dont get woken up by the sound of the transfer window slamming shut

  7. lets all do the huddle on

no one can fault ryan christie’s effort and willingness to show for the ball and take it for a run so he’s a plus for me

but his cross balls have been really bad lately, they are hit far too high and hard

he needs to give duffy at least a chance of getting on the end of them

  8. So Ryan Christie (even though to me it looks like he clenches his fist in celebration) is the latest player with “issues”.

For clarity, who in the team have we decided doesn’t have issues?

We’re like a bunch of sweetie wives!

And while we’re at it, now Edouard is getting driven to the airport by some, who is not on the “wouldn’t lose sleep if he left” list?

    SonsOfErin ….

To your quote from Sevco (we’ll forgive you)

“Following the acquisition of the exclusive 2020/2021 season SPFL rights for India, Rangers forged a wide-ranging partnership with Star Sports…..”

The wording is not explicit (kind) or just deliberately misleading.

    It’s syntactically incorrect.

Remember Graeme Speirs chuckling publicly at Traynor’s “tortured syntax”.

    The likely scenario?

The rights for exclusivity in India have likely been acquired

    …. by Star Sports

The bit not mentioned – “from the SPFL”.

Just more staunch, arrogant, porkies by omission to create the impression of being big, global and important.

    All nonsense.

    Hail hail

`How they are paying the wages they are paying and still standing is beyond me.

    Does not make sense.`

I have thought the same for quite some time. Very suspicious. Will the rupees help? Is it still rupees in India?

  12. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Just my opinion but …

The Ryan Christie “looks like a guy who looks like he wants to look to leave” debate is wearing thin.

From what I can gather this began because his father was quoted?

    What did he actually say?

Was he prompted by a mischievous hack?

    (If so, serious mission accomplished)

For info – contracted until 2022.

If we want him, he’s staying.

    End of.

  13. A,

It was a word I came across many years ago in an English Lecture and I liked it instantly. I can`t think of a single word equivalent in English.

PS I have a couple of Celtic books I was going to give to Sticky but Covid has put paid to that. If you would like them, let me know.

  14. LazyD…………

Quite agree……..How come no tough questioning on where thur money is coming from……..

    Also…

    “the Columbian Kris Boyd……….”

    :))))))))))))))))))))))))))

  15. To continue from my earlier post about the BBC [scotland] tranfer deadline feed.

They are now reporting Laxalt celtic interest and say the play has ‘decent pedigree’.

    hahaha.

A 24 cap Uruguay international who plays for AC MILAN in serieA……..’DECENT PEDIGREE’

Someone or some people are hurting badly.

  16. Back to Basics

That makes much more sense re the tortured syntax and omission (intentional or otherwise) of SPFL…

    Celtic 3 Rangers 2 – 1982 October

    Referee: B. McGinlay (Balfron)

*Really enjoyed that forgot how much those games meant tae me. Many many years ago when I was back hame in between the 2 stints out here I worked with this older man fae Partick, he was more intae fishing than fitba and in fact I used tae get him his licence for the River Leven using my address.

His pal was a Tim though and he said tae me one Sunday morning after a bevy session the night before, “all week I’ve got you and on the weekend McGinley and all I get is Celtic Celtic Celtic”. His mate was the ref that day’s da.

  18. When we get Laxalt in tonight….and do not lose any big guns….we should be cracking the champagne.

This window has been the best of my life [on paper].

We now have all the tools.

All the recent signings have been first team ready with brilliant pedigree.

    No projects.

Lenny will mould a team to get excited about out of what we now have.

With some tweeks here and there I think we are going to be heading into a golden season.

Time for a bit of credit to Mr Lawell

  19. LazyD……….the piece also characterises Celtica as being unhappy in the transfer realm with no additional commentary to balance the reality of our strong and strengthening position………….

That dick Wilson still calling the shots?

  20. Hot Smoked

J, I did think of a word when we last discussed it the other week but it escapes me for the moment.

  21. Would love to see the Uruguayan up against the fat Colombian dishing out some of the old South American theatrics.

  22. My thoughts on the Ryan Christie not Celebrating LG brillent headed goal yesterday.

When he scored the goal, I couldn’t believe The amount of players surrounded Leigh with hugs &cuddles,I noticed Ryan not joining in the Celebration, but a clenched fist is a way to Celebrate something you like,

I was pleased that Ryan didn’t join in, in my mind Ryan did the right thing and the rest of the team were in the wrong, with this Covid 19 getting stronger Ryan did the right thing by celebrating from a distance.

About the game itself,we we not in tune but we won the game, and still going for the 10.

  23. Thanks for all the best wishes, they were-are much appreciated, Mrs TET is still in the woods but the news could have been worse.

    Thanks again.

The game yesterday, not great, brutal if the truth be known and we really need to get our act together, we really do, we don’t have compliant referees to help, the opposite in fact, yesterday just emphasised that, Walsh supposed to be a Thistle fan, maybes aye, but he was shocking, just doing his job to make sure he keeps it with the SFA.

I honestly think the lack of fans is affecting our game and I also believe, rightly or wrongly, that Lenny really doesn’t know what his best team is, sometimes choice is a burden instead of a bonus.

    I hope the Laxalt deal goes through, that would like some have said make this window superb, so kudos to Pedro if it happens, jeez that was hard to write :>}

  24. Regarding Ryan and his lack of celebration, mibbees just mibbees he disnae like wee Sparky or his lifestyle. Chocky didnae like the wee trackie seller, Bobby Charlton likewise with George Best, Teddy Sheringham and Andy Cole.

There are probably lots out there like that. Personally I didnae like a few people I worked with and I’m a very personable person, mibbees that’s because of the Et tu, Brute that happened.

  25. the one thing you always get from young Christie is 100% effort – for a creative midfielder he does a lot of off the ball defensive work often overlooked. His attitude is the same for Scotland and Celtic. He set such high standards last season and I’m sure he’s working hi way back to that level.

Perhaps he need to conserve energy, perhaps he’s just waiting for that goal to take the weight off his shoulders.

The best teams and players somehow find the right time to peak – usually in the big matches and in the business end of the season.

Also, If we sign a left back of that quality , I’ll be absolutely delighted. Rogic back is like a new signing as is Mikey J when he is back – hopefully soon

Strangely today another £8.2m of loans was converted for 42m shares at 20p in Sevco

    Strange 🤔

I don’t do Twitter but seen a tweet from heavidor with detail

  27. NORRIEM on 5TH OCTOBER 2020 7:12 PM

So how does this convert loans to shares thing work then?

Who are the winners ,who the losers?

Why don’t all clubs do it?

  28. Go tell the Spartim on

On the normal BBC sport pages you get a chance to comment it’s not entirely difficult to u distance why BBC shortbread don’t generally have any, petty tribal squabbling apart, they know they’d get dogs abuse for their bias.

They’re on a par with the police and the sfa as the pillars of bigotry. I really can’t fathom why the plc are so silent on all things, my only, outside, thinking is that we are working our ticket so we cleave them all behind

  29. Lazydynamite

Someone has lent the club £8.2m to keep the lights on – they can’t repay the loan so they give the lender shares instead.

The existing shareholders are the losers as it dilutes their ownership in the club.

The lender is also the loser because the value of 20p a share is a joke.

  30. LazyD –

Agreed, this window looks like it could be a cracker. Well done to all involved.

I’m also feeling much more confident about the game v the huns after yesterday – which I can only assume is due to Griffiths scoring and getting a left wing back in rather than yesterday’s performance.

  31. The Ryan conjecture thing is misplaced I think – too much read into very little.

If he did fancy a move tho’ would it be any wonder – he gets brutalised in plain sight by fellow pros mainly down to the colour of his shirt……with the konnivance of refs…. his career has a limited timeline but he’s a good Tim under contract………….

Things will settle down once the window shuts.

    All sounds a bit iffy.

Like our government raking up the furlough to keep the middle class folks wages paid all year by printing money at will.

Hyper inflation will follow and the equivalent will follow follow at Ibrox.
