So stressed Juninho & film productions get an airing

689

Interesting angle in today’s Telegraph: “Celtic are the only club in Scotland, apart from Rangers, who are known to have used an EBT contract”. Why are we part of this conversation?  Despite the millions of words written on the subject of EBTs over the last six years, there appears to be a curious misunderstanding about them.

Juninho arrived at Celtic with an EBT from earlier in his career. Celtic funded this Trust around the time the player left the club, informed HMRC about the transaction, and paid the tax due. No side letters (contracts) were issued with regard to this Trust. No information was hidden from HMRC or football authorities.

The conversation went a bit like this:

Celtic: Hi HMRC, Celtic here.  We’ve paid Mr Juninho’s EBT £Xk.  What is our tax position?
HMRC: £Yk tax is due on that payment.
Celtic: Thanks.  Will pay today.

EBTs are in themselves not illegal, nor even immoral. They were introduced to allow employers a framework to give loans to employees.  Many employers, formally or informally, give loans to employees to cover everything from crises to Christmas expenses.  Or migration expenses, which is occasionally the case in football.  That some use EBTs to attempt to put income beyond the reach of taxation is a reflection on those clubs, not others who openly declare EBT payments to HMRC and pay any corresponding tax.

The newspaper goes on to offer a defence against HMRC, almost as though it was dictated from David Murray himself: “it is believed that one argument against the supposition that Rangers secured players by means of EVTs (sic.) is that a range of variable inducements were in operation at that time and not only at Ibrox.

“Other avoidance schemes involved investment in such vehicles as film production companies and forestry development.”

Yes, a range of other inducements were available – legal ones.  Other people legally used other schemes.  It’s clarity of thought like this being a defence of Rangers that which put them into such a mess to begin with.

Delighted to read Rangers Tax Case back with such insight last night.  Catch up with him here if you missed it.

BURGAS HOOPS Is it anyones business other than Tonys this an open forum a celtic forum not a court room as some are trying to make it.

CANALAMAR. If you go down that road bring on the Other CQNr who was supposedly assaulted to hear his side of the story dont just accuse the man by saying I heard. We are an open forum do you think everyone on here other than TD67 is a Saint ? if not are we all going to give our personal confession. H.H.

  6. Tony D. Any chance of coming round to my house, got a couple of people at door trying to flog me solar panels, that apparently work when it’s raining? I will send a taxi.Thanks.

  7. JFH,

I never raised the issue, it was raised last week, it’s broached, as far as I’m concerned being one of those offered to come to the brazen to sort our differences I find this to be a very educational and enlightening subject.

Now you can continue shield you ned pal for as long as you like I have no truck with trying to protect bullies which is exactly what you are doing. This is not a subject that should be ignored by CQN.

  8. Joe Filippis Haircut on

TD67 Fella this out of order in my opinion and im going to sign off for an hour to let this nonsense calm down now I know you are your own man but I would suggest in the spirit of friendship you do the same.To the rest of you Bhoys just think what you are saying CANALAMAR saying it is for the safety of other bloggers to know if the accusation against Tony is correct or not.If that is the case and it is nonsense in my opinion, every blogger on CQN would need to give their personal life history to ensure CQN bloggers are safe at CQN events. H.H.

  9. Lol, I have never, NEVER invited anyone fro CQN to have a drink with me at my local, or been involved in any hootenannys with ANY CQN, I have meat many CQN guys at my local, and in Las Vegas, but only a friendly bases, I did have a disagreement with two CQN guys who came into my local yes, but that’s it, assault?

CANALAMAR. Fella I dont know TD67 from Adam I do know however,he is being hounded for his views and because he defends them. Now you may think you correct but I do not agree, you and others are casting doubt about another blogger which has nothing to do with us.Unless of course you yourself are free from sin and can cast the first stone ? H.H.

  11. The Battered Bunnet on

I have a Grafton open back, does that count? Lovely instrument.

Never walloped emdy with it mind you.

There are a number of things that have made CQN the Go To place for Celtic supporters and, indeed, fans of other clubs who read it periodically.

Assorted MSM journos also pop in periodically to get the gen (hullo guys). We found out in 2009 that good Roddy Forsyth is an avid reader, when a spoof story on Stevie Nicol getting theCeltic job appeard on the front page of the Telegraph the next day. Roddy of course penned the article to which Paul’s leader today refers.

Note to Roddy: I saw that a car driver was recently sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. I am also a car driver, ought I be concerned?

Anyway, thngs that make a good blog, and which make CQN the best of them, start with Paul67, his reporting, his opinion pieces, and his remarkable effort to maintain the infrastructure that makes it all possible.

From that infrastructure has grown a community, a real, tangible, collected and difference-making community of people. I’ve lost count of the sum of money raised for good causes by this community, but it’s over £1 Million.

The views, opinions and knowledge of the individuals who make up this community are also a great asset. Some of the critical moments in Scottish Football first saw the light of day here, and all of them have been considered and analysed to a depth hitherto unseen in mainstream media platforms.

Logging on to CQN is a passport to the thoughts of myriad informed and experienced people from the spectrum of life. The blog is as valued for the input over the years of the likes of NeilR on Finance and Celtic First on Faith, as it is for Paul67 on the cause du jour.

It’s also a social environment, a place to enjoy the humour, music and mischief of so many folk, like-minded and otherwise. You’ll find a vast library of knowledge filed away on the archives of CQN, whether it be the case for/against an Independent Scotland, or the wardrobe used by The Embrocation during the Cod Almighty tour, or the pattern of global warming as observed from East Kilbride.

And you’ll find Celtic. The players, the tactics, the victories, the defeats, the history, the here-and-now and the future. And the emotion. Lots of it. Nowhere else on the web is Celtic so thoroughly and expertly examined. Nowhere else is Celtic so embraced and loved, so berated and criticised.

Some folk don’t understand this. Some folk think this is a place to bump yer gums, tit-for-tat, argue the toss over something which isn’t worthy of the toss in the first place. It’s a great thing that such folk feel that they belong here, but there’s a disconnect between what the blog represents and what it is sometimes used for.

It’s a pity. At its best, CQN is peerless. We’re remarkably fortunate to be part of it at all. Keep that in mind.

  12. JFH,

That’s twisted pish and you know it, it’s basically about no making tony mad or he’ll assault you, we should ignore trusted bloggers and take the bullies word that nothing happened, is that right ?

Well naw no for me, I’ll trust those I’m used to trusting and leave the liar to his fantasy that he’s protecting anything but his right to bully. Uriah Heep with a vicious and violent streak.

  13. It is not his views that are the problem.

It is the way he delivers them that is the problem.

However, if he has assaulted another blogger I want to know.

As a regular blogger on here I feel I am entitled to that information.

No digs, no bad language, no invective. Just an ordinary post.

    Jungle James,

Ignoring the challenge cup as we cannot be drawn in it…

Since sevcos inception, they have been drawn at home 14 times and away 9.

Celtic, on the other hand have been drawn 5 times at home and away 11.

    Draw your own conclusions.

Figures were Googled but a bit fag packety so might (but I don’t think so) contain errors.
