So stressed Juninho & film productions get an airing

689

Interesting angle in today’s Telegraph: “Celtic are the only club in Scotland, apart from Rangers, who are known to have used an EBT contract”. Why are we part of this conversation?  Despite the millions of words written on the subject of EBTs over the last six years, there appears to be a curious misunderstanding about them.

Juninho arrived at Celtic with an EBT from earlier in his career. Celtic funded this Trust around the time the player left the club, informed HMRC about the transaction, and paid the tax due. No side letters (contracts) were issued with regard to this Trust. No information was hidden from HMRC or football authorities.

The conversation went a bit like this:

Celtic: Hi HMRC, Celtic here.  We’ve paid Mr Juninho’s EBT £Xk.  What is our tax position?
HMRC: £Yk tax is due on that payment.
Celtic: Thanks.  Will pay today.

EBTs are in themselves not illegal, nor even immoral. They were introduced to allow employers a framework to give loans to employees.  Many employers, formally or informally, give loans to employees to cover everything from crises to Christmas expenses.  Or migration expenses, which is occasionally the case in football.  That some use EBTs to attempt to put income beyond the reach of taxation is a reflection on those clubs, not others who openly declare EBT payments to HMRC and pay any corresponding tax.

The newspaper goes on to offer a defence against HMRC, almost as though it was dictated from David Murray himself: “it is believed that one argument against the supposition that Rangers secured players by means of EVTs (sic.) is that a range of variable inducements were in operation at that time and not only at Ibrox.

“Other avoidance schemes involved investment in such vehicles as film production companies and forestry development.”

Yes, a range of other inducements were available – legal ones.  Other people legally used other schemes.  It’s clarity of thought like this being a defence of Rangers that which put them into such a mess to begin with.

Delighted to read Rangers Tax Case back with such insight last night.  Catch up with him here if you missed it.

Ah, bionomial probability. Is it? Or isn’t it? There’s a topic close to Mags McGill’s heart.

  3. Jeez oh guys get a grip. Last week I posted that I thought Paul67 had sold out to Jim Henson enterprises. (They give us miss piggy and kermit). Guess I was not wrong as the site seems to full of feqqing muppets posting. Only thing they have not said is ” my big brother can beat your big brother”!!

Why not settle it in a neutral venue and see who can pee the highest because some of the titfor tat is just that, piss. (Sorry Paul for language)

I live 71/2 thousand miles from Celtic Park so this site is my first port of call every morning for news from home. Don’t spoil a great site with your childish and spitefull posts. (Honestly that’s how they come across) you all know who you are and think you should thank Paul67 for giving you this blog even if you can’t bring yourself to apologise. I’ll be back in Scotland in February and hope to meet more CQN’ERS then

  4. Either the only people talking are one’s i’ve hidden, or the board’s really quiet. It’s pleasant.

Anyways from here on in injuries permitting I’d like to see a midfield of Bitton, Rogic, Allen, McGregor and Forrest. With occasional fleeting appearances from Armstrong and Mackay-Steven.

  5. JJ,

Aye I thought it was more than that too but let’s not kid ourselves, those figures are still a bit skewed Imo.

A more telling statistic is how many of the numerous home cup ties Sevco have played have been broadcast live on the BBC.

No doubt their Scottish cup tie will be live on the BBC too.

As predictable as Richard Wilson disappearing up Dave King’s backside to the extent that only his toenails are visible.

  9. I know Tims will rightly moan that it’s yet another away cup fixture but from a purely selfish viewpoint I’m delighted we’ve got a trip to a ground I’ve never been to.

  10. As it gets older the blog resembles my memories of Celtic through my days as a young fan in the (very) late 70’s, through 80’s primary school days, Fergus, MON and the modern moneyball struggle against a rigged European system with the incredible string of players through those eras. Bloggers, like players, come and go, some firm favourites, some flashes of brilliance, form is fleeting in most cases. The blog management and format changes like tactics, some amazing threads and daily excitement month after month, some fallow periods, and very few bloggers have form over the long haul. (SFTB is my Paul McStay). Some embarrass the hoops of course.

For me anyway it has throughout the years augmented my Celtic support, a new channel, new media, new information, some verbal boxing, frustration, and some emotion. Its power is not in any individual. It’s in the collective. Some naturally stand out, be it humour, style, personality, knowledge. The social and charitable element has been pretty amazing.

When one person or small group dominates the blog for a long time that is, for me, its single biggest downfall. No one can be that interesting, that often. I have bored people to tears on many occasions! I have no more or less valid a view than anyone else and maybe time and a laissez faire approach will always be the way the CQN journey will stay in parallel with Celtic’s but for what it’s worth I would urge folk to remember there are thousands of people who read these pages. Thousands. Is what you write worth reading and would you say it in an auditorium full of people when you’re handed the mic? I have left the hall for many months at a time. It’s like an X Factor of cognitive dissonance for Tourettes sufferers.

So I’d like to ratchet up the pontification, condescension and self righteousness now but I think you’ve had enough. My suggestion to the admins, if possible, is to consider a limit on the number of times someone can post in a day on the main blog and have a link at the top to a CQN chat room. You should probably limit me to one a month.

    Good day

I see John James is back up. I really don’t know whether this guy is a hun or not as his latest blog could have been written by Auldheid a year ago. Has he been sent a copy of the Res 12 stuff and knows where this is going to end up ? See for yourself at ….

I was thinking the exact same. There is a very detailed narrative of RFC’s misdemeanours in the hands of Celtic shareholders who asked for it. Around 40 I think.

Only the upcoming court cases prevent that narrative being posted all over Celtic Cyberspace but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some leakage.

In fact I’d be disappointed if there wasn’t. ;)

I was going to suggest a CQN whip-round to raise money to buy one …. but given the whole groping thing, I’m afraid that might be misconstrued, and I’d get banned by P67!

  20. My goodness BlantyreKev, That was a deep well constructed post,

Today was like a kids playground and you would cringe at the thought of newbies logging on for the first time and what impression they would get of this great site.

It’s hard to know what to say, on the one hand we all agree on the right of free speech and freedom to express an opinion. In real life if someone is being obnoxious you can just avoid them but on a blog it’s difficult, as they are in your face constantly. You can only scroll on by so long and after that the only other way to avoid them is to quit the blog.

Good people with a lot to offer have left and are continuing to leave, these posters have rights too. Is it OK for some posters to dominate the blog in a selfish boorish manner and spoil it for others under the umbrella of “the right to express there opinion”.

Your suggestion of limiting the number of posts any individual poster may make in a day has merits but I can’t see it happening. I don’t have the solution, common sense and self policing is what you would want to work but the problem with common sense is it’s not that common.

My only objection to ant poster here is when their obnoxiousness becomes personal.

Unfortunately cyber space is a bit like the bevvy, its anonymous nature makes folk tink than can say what they like without any comeback.
