Georgios, “I’ll have two goals in the first half”.

No matter what Celtic’s objectives for tonight are, to keep things decent, or to overcome an enormous deficit, priority no. 1 will be to protect Fraser Forster’s goal as much as possible.  Juventus scored three goals at Celtic Park while making sure Celtic players were denied daylight in front of goal.

We also have to keep 11 men on the park.  Manchester United went out of Europe last night in part because they went down to 10 men, but also because Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t produce an effective way to protect his lead with 1 men until it was too late.  If anyone is red carded, let’s make sure he is wearing black and white.  Indiscipline from the home team offers our only opportunity of making a contest of the tie.

Charlie Mulgew is lacking match fitness and would be an enormous risk, no matter how key to our European game-plan he is.  Georgios Samaras is the player European scouts all go home talking about after watching Celtic.  He is the archetypal European player and could extend his already-record-breaking scoring run away from home in Europe tonight.  Don’t bet against him.

Our full backs will be key.  Emilio Izaguirre played his best game for Celtic in the first leg but has been far less convincing since.  It is time for the Honduran to demonstrate his full potential on the big stage.  Adam Matthews has impressed since arriving at the club and I fully expect he will mature before your eyes tonight.

One or two Celtic players have declined new contracts in the hope of attracting some of the silly money available elsewhere.  Producing at the Juventus Stadium might convince some they are worth the trouble. This is no reference to Photogenic Georgio, b.t.w., he’s here for keeps!

The Twists & Turns Celtic Supporters Club is holding a charity night at the Supporters’ Association Club on London Road, this Friday, 8 March, at 7.30pm.  There will be Question and Answer session with me, John Fallon, Dixie Deans, Archie MacPherson, compared by Phil Agnew.  Afterwards you can enjoy music from Foggy Dew.

Tickets are £10 and you can get them from Phil by calling 07811 178764, or email me your numer and I’ll pass it on (celticquicknews@gmail.com).  Profits are going to the Tommy Burns charity.

I’ve been to a few nights with John, Dixie, Archie and Phil and they are always fantastic Celtic occasions, so get yourself a ticket.  See you there.

  2. I think Celtic declared their view of the tie when they sent Scott Brown to the surgeon.

I wonder how much anaesthetic it will take to put him under.

And how much more to keep him there.

You wouldn’t want SB waking up when you’re leaning over him with a chib in your hand.

  3. A draw? a draw? A DRAWMYASS

Take a 4-0 win right now and Fake Madrid next round….

  4. My thoughts for tonight’s match……if we don’t concede a goal in first 10 minutes or the last 10 minutes then we have a chance. These are the periods of time when we seem to be most vulnerable in Europe.

I have decided to give the cup semi a miss, the only realistic way that we normal fans can make our views known is through our wallets, money will be spent watching it in the boozer instead.

Would boycott the final also if we make it,however I won’t be in Scotland that weekend anyway so an easy decision.

A more difficult issue for me right now is the date that we will win the league. My wife and I are getting a week in the sun away from the kids for the first time since the oldest was born 20 yrs ago.Problem is that its looking likely that we will win the league on the 6th April, when I’ll be away………………………Sh**e.

Would it not be spelt the Romans were for eating rather than wheat.

You could well be right! I ate a couple of loaves of it last time I was home and visiting my son to the south in Dingwall. Very nourishing and flavoursome but pricey. Read that it was an ancient grain but cant remember if a British type or the common name for European etc.It was only the magasine article of the book that I read and high protein wheat was the name used with Egypt being the grainbasket of the empire, Sicily also important and Britain coming into it much later.

I had forgotten, between the reading and the eating, about spelt!

AS to the main debate, looking forward to updates along with breakfast here, 100% effort from all whatever the result. More important to get the rules of the game administered fairly and get rid of those guilty of not doing so!

Looking at comments above Puma are not sponsoring Sevco they are in a technical arrangement to make their kit, no wonder they are losing £1m per month.

Anyway its Mrs Prestonpans 50th tonight so I’ll not be able to watch the game but everyone enjoy the game and I hope for a surprise when I return from my meal!

  13. Just got two for tonight at kempton Robin Hood bay 7 clock and zaroud 830 dunno anything bout any of them.

    Mon the Hoops,

  14. I’m reminded of the funereal presser following a notable humping of the ancestors of the present day Replika Klub……..how baleful were the scoddish hacks and how mute they were…..with deepest respect for the auld ned. Not a difficult question asked.

And yet the snyde grilling and sneering that NFL has had to endure today – before the Game. BEFORE the game.

Despite flying the flag for Scotland in the Champions League.

    Shameful.

Potsandpans bhoys….Celtic qualification or sexy time? Yikes!!!

    ;p

  16. im curious folks……would you prefer we opened up tonight and had a real go at a ‘freak’ result or would you prefer we played it tight and tried to gain a respectable result to round off a very respectable european champions league season?……me ,im must admit i fear a thumping tonight, and a real nasty agg score that will be flashed in our faces by our critics .

therefore i hope we keep it tight and at worst lose by the odd goal….sorry it sounds so negative but i have a real bad feeling we are going to get slaughtered…schoolboy defending has always been our downfall in the really big games like this….

keep it tight boys and go out with your heads held very high and proud.a win would be a real marker for next year

  17. I believe, a little, but I believe.

lazydynamite – cautious for me, hoping Juvé are off guard at home

  18. Hoping to keep it tight and sneak a lead just before half time. Then anything can happen.

Despite the official statements, they are expecting this to be like a pre season friendly.

    Forza Celtic!!!

  19. i agree ‘jackie mac’…..nothing can take away what we have done this season but a real ‘doing’ will take away the shine to an extent…..stay competative celtic and i will be happy

Before the first leg I thought we would win or draw at Parkhead but lose out overall on an away leg defeat, I’m in the we’ve overachieved camp so I wasn’t too bothered bearing in mind what a fantastic accomplishment in qualifying from the group stages.

Now I agree with Neil who says we will need a minor miracle to progress, and I’m sure you’re well aware how often miracles happen. I’ll be watching from behind the couch.

  21. If anyone can help Barrach Obampot I sincerely hope they do so. I believe what Barrach is doing is along the lines of the way to go ie Action outside Scotland. If Sion take an interest then UEFA might just follow. As Barrach signed off, worthatryCSC. Certainly is and more power to your elbow, Barrach O.

  22. dont let the emphatic nature of the first leg ruin it guys.we deserve to be there tonight.we should enjoy and savour every last minute….we have made progress this year big style.this is a champions league round of 16 tie second leg FFS……a couple of years ago i would not have believed anyone who said we would still be in europes premier tournament come march!!!!…proud of my team, well done neil lennon!!!

  23. I’d like to see us score an early goal, to settle our nerves and shatter theirs.
