Social cost of Scots exclusion

1522

You want to know the real social cost of Scottish football’s exclusion from the league structure England and Wales share?  It’s the lack of pitches, nets, strips, balls and coaching certifications that the £1bn bounty, promised by the Barclay’s Premier League last night to the grassroots game.

£1bn to the grassroots is a huge sum.  It dwarfs what taxpayers can afford and will provide a series of benefits our kids and amateur players are denied.

If we’re part of the UK, we should be part of the UK’s commercial opportunities.  Every youth team in the land are excluded because of the actions of a cartel.

What are the SFA doing about it?  Nothing.  Their plans don’t seem to require world-class youth facilities.

Ernie Lynch – fair point, but SD has also petitioned the court to not allow any shareholder to ask for the register. For those shareholders who want to protect their privacy, there are many and various labyrinthine schemes that can allow them to do so.

It’s a case of the rapacious zero hour capitalist versus the little guy (figuratively), and we’re all on the side of Ashley – seems starange to me.

Ah the golden age of rangers, at random, nine in a row, the Manchester riots, gazza, big Jorge albert smashing his knee into Paul Lamberts face and getting a penalty for it, Sean Maloney getting halved in two in the rangers penalty box and not getting a penalty for it, brian laudrup, jim whyte, an impromptu huns huddle at Celtic Park to ridicule Celtic, andy gorams black arm band… …ah could go one, when will we see the likes of them again I wonder….never ever ever I hope.

I thought the £20 million immediately had been slightly altered to £10 million, err, over the next 12 months.

  11. Can’t have it both ways Paul. In football terms we are already “independent”- and have been for 150 years.

If we want EPL cash we need to abolish the SFA and the Scotland team.

Personally, I’d have no problem with that. But in this current political climate in Scotland, when all that matters is that you are seen to be more “Scoddish” than your opponent, there’s no chance of that…

  12. Rock Tree Bhoy

Don’t know your age, but my glorious memories are, Billy lifting the big cup, 9 in a row with one of the best footballing sides in European history, Jinky, Kenny, MON, KoK. Celtic fans winning FIFA and UEFA awards.

    No cheating.

They went bust trying to emulate us.

They will not challenge us on the park for at least 10 years, probably never. Great in’t it?

  13. The Battered Bunnet on

But we don’t do anything about it Paul, ‘we’ being supporters of Scottish football.

I put an idea to ‘the brass’ a couple of years ago along the lines of raising a ‘levy’ on gates – say £1 per ticket.

That would deliver something in the region of £4.5M each year on its own.

It would be eligible for Gift Aid tax relief, adding £1.25M.

Provided the funds were used to support community level investment, it would also be eligible for matched funding from assorted local, Scottish and UK Govt departments.

Given the profile of the scheme, commercial sponsorship would be expected.

My middle road estimate put the gross figure at £15M per year.

A 3G pitch costs around £750K to lay, and maintenance costs are equivalent to grass.

A ‘Regional Football Centre’ costs around £7.5M, providing indoor and outdoor pitches.

Over a five year period, we might expect to build 10 more regional football centres to add to the 6 current centres, and up to 30 further single 3G pitches, plus a formal coach education programme.

By 2020, every town in Scotland with a population of more than 40,000 would have top class indoor and outdoor football facilities, with numerous other community level 3G pitches across the country.

All for the price of £1 at the gate, paid for by the supporters, the very people who benefit most from the outcomes.

Got a fairly positive, enthusiastic response, from ‘the brass’. When it went to the clubs, the thumbs were firmly downwards.

The concern was that putting £1 on the gate would reduce their attendances.

    There you go.

Scotland, where we sit beside the fire crying ‘cos we’re too hot.

  14. The Battered Bunnet on

Forgot to note the existing £5M annual funding for community and performance programmes given to the SFA, giving the total over 5 years of £100M.

    All other numbers pretty sound.

  15. TBB

The SFA and the SFPL are the clubs. They could make our national game so much better for everyone if they took off their blinkers.

A bit of leadership, some commercial nous, a captive (but rapidly shrinking) market and some elbow grease could transform the game here.

You need to understand that the ‘executives’ are interested solely in their own job, while the clubs are interested solely in their own club.

No one has any interest in the Game itself, least of all those whose mandate it is to promote and foster it, and protect it from abuses.

I only threw that in because someone earlier in the thread mentioned the golden age of rangers, but agree your memories are much much better, all this we need them back nonsense from the likes of Dermot D, Neil and more recently KC, I sincerely hope they never ever come back.

age wise my first game was the 1969 Cup final when deidco was still alive, 4 zip to the good guys, and Henrik Larsson is the best Celtic player by a street that I ever saw playing.

  21. TBB

Exactly. Celtic, when they carved up the old voting system with Rangers, and basically starved the “Diddy teams” of TV money, were certainly only thinking of No 1.

At least now we know that the clubs are ALL interdependent, not just the two; or one and a millstone.

  24. Of course, you’re correct to lament the vested interest evident at the top level of our game.

To develop your point further, I would add that (sadly) we’re not blessed with talented officials or board members of vision and/or charisma.

As I have often suggested, the SFA and SPL blazerati perform only slightly above the level of the average bowling green or golf club committee; and even then, not all of the time … !

Ger57 …’they wont be able to challenge us for 10 years’

I hope you are right, but I am afraid that it will not turn out like that …

If they can get their crap together, they are the only club with a sufficiently large support to put together a squad to really consistently challenge us … and we have to assume that is the case, and prepare accordingly …. and, given the last few years, we have to assume that they will get every break/favour to assist them in doing so….

They were liquidated… that should have been the end of it, but, they were helped (by us, in part?), and so, they, in a fashion, they exist … has celtic ever come out and said they died? Why not?

Our club had the chance to put the final stake in them, but, chose not to do so… When liquidated, we were the only game in town, and could have drawn a line in the sand, but chose not to do so ….. in fact, our club (or at least those who run it) seem to want them ‘back’ in the top flight. So, I suspect that Celtic will continue to turn a blind eye to, if not downright assist in, the shenanigans …. clearly the people running Celtic think it is better financially to have a strong Sevco … and will do what is necessary to see that happens.

Sure we make noise about not doing joint sponsorship deals, but, at the key time, our club was silent … except for DD to say he wanted they back! There is no reason to think Celtic’s view on this (the OF business model) has changed ….

We fans may not like to think of the clubs as joined, but clearly the people running our club seem an economic benefit in having them hang around, and even be competitive …

The league/refs have always been slanted to ensure they get every break … no reason to suspect that will change.

Sevco still commands a fair bit of loyalty from young zombies, who will go there …. and if they can get beyond their own arrogance, and realize that they can no longer buy a CL, they may be able to cobble together a decent young squad for not too much money … like Aberdeen and Hearts seem to have done …

financially, they are a trainwreck, but they will continue to get ‘favours’ to ensure they succeed on the pitch, and survive of the pitch ..

Even losing half their squad having to be replaced, they will still be good enough to make a run in the league … not good enough to challenge us, but maybe second in a season or two …

And Celtic’s team have to guard against complacency ….. winning the first is easy…. it is repeating that is hard… and after several seasons with little or no domestic competition, it would be difficult for any team to remain as focused and sharp

So, unless and until I can go somewhere and p on their graves, or buy some groceries from the Tesco at Ibrox, I will not be content that they are gone, or become complacent …

A wounded zombie (with lots of help from the blazers) can be dangerous if we aren’t vigilant …

  26. Golf, what else…………

Golfer walks into the pro shop at the local course and asks the golf pro if they sell ball markers.

The golf pro says they do, and they are $1.00.

The guy gives the golf pro a dollar. The golf pro opens the register, puts the dollar in and hands him a dime.

  27. The SFA is not fit for purpose, they where supposed to nurture and protect our game, they have become the biggest parasite in the garden, a garden overcome with pests and weeds. I would gladly dispose of all of them, and bring in a crew from America to have a look at what needs done. The Americans know sport, and I am sick of traditions.

    Hail Hail.

  28. The Battered Bunnet on

    Yip.

Unfortunately, far too many in and around the game continue the old, discredited attitudes as the default.

Saying that, there is ‘football spectrum’, from community to competitive to elite.

We have just one elite club in Scotland, a number of competitive clubs, and hundreds of community clubs.

Most of the competitive clubs are closer to community than elite. What are Hamilton if not a community club at heart after all?

I think maybe Aberdeen could become elite in the right circumstances, maybe one or two others from the Edinburgh clubs, the Dundee clubs, and (I did say given the circumstances) Sevco.

The right circumstances are a transformation in the playing environment.

In the meantime even Celtic diminish.

We gotta get outta this place…

The remainder need to understand their place in their community.

I’m hopeful of just such a transformation occurring coincident with the first commercial nuclear fission power plant coming on line…

  29. Mike in Toronto, I disagree with everything you just said, Sevco will liquidate again, within 5 years.

  31. Mind that time the SFA hired a Dutch guru to reinvigorate our youth development? And that time they commissioned a report by Henry McLeish? Mind Ranier Bonhof?

    Money well spent clearly…

And given the state of our game, how did Andy Roxborough make it so far in FIFA? (the organization not the computer game – I doubt he has the dexterity for the latter).

If I remember rightly, the FA actually opposed the creation of the EPL, initially at least. The Football League lost out badly even if they retained access to the top via the old up and down system. And many did, and are still paying the price. The problem in Scotland is that as long as 10% of Sky’s paying customers are prepared to be treated with contempt then nothing will change. Name me one politician prepared to lead the charge!
