Social Values headline Celtic AGM

1105

Our Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park this morning, was a more prosaic affair than last year’s.  Chief executive, Peter Lawwell, told the meeting last season’s on-field and financial results were “fantastic” in difficult circumstances.

He repeatedly referred to the “balance” required between immediate expenditure policies and judging the long-term requirements of the club, adding that in recent years, “Rangers went bust, Hearts went bust, and Hibs were relegated.”

For the first time the AGM heard from the Celtic FC Foundation chief executive.  Tony Hamilton was given a video slot alongside the chairman, chief exec and the manager and he spoke about how the Foundation was interwoven into the fabric of the club, from the top to bottom, and of our history.

The alleviation of poverty is a major target for 2015, building on work the Foundation carried out this year in north and east Glasgow, Inverclyde and North Lanarkshire.  Tony added, “If things weren’t tough we wouldn’t need a charity – but they are.

“We’re deadly serious about making a difference.” I’ll try to get the video, it’s worth watching.

Ronny Deila laid out his objectives for this season: qualification for the Champions League, win the treble, develop players and play attacking, attractive, football.  Peter Lawwell didn’t want to use the managerial transition over the summer as an excuse for failing to reach the Champions League, but suggested it was grounds for mitigation.

The chairman, chief executive and manager all liberally infused their comments with transformational effect Champions League qualification would have on the club next season.

The Celtic Trust proposed two resolutions, the first of which, concerning club-fan interaction, they agreed to adjourn.  In his video message, chairman Ian Bankier informed the meeting that the directors would oppose the Living Wage resolution, but that they had entered into discussions with the staff on the matter, proposing that the starting pay for permanent staff is set at £7.85 per hour, which just happens to be equal to the Living Wage.

In response to this Jeanette Findlay, proposing the resolution on behalf of the Trust, reached the microphone and tore up her prepared speech.  She did, however, urge the club to go the final mile and become an accredited Living Wage employer.

Peter Lawwell informed the meeting that he would be meeting John Guidetti’s agent within the next two weeks and that he is waiting to hear back from Kris Commons representatives on his latest offer.

Ronny Deila added that it was important for the club to retain its top players, giving Guidetti and Justin Denayer special mention, but insisted it was wrong to give into demands from any one player three times the going rate for other senior players.

  1. LiviBhoy,

That kind of common sense is never going to catch on.

It always amazes me how many Celtic fans absolutely despise PL believing he is running the club into the ground. Meanwhile the supporters of the dark side loath the man as they are convinced he is masterminding an international fenian conspiracy againts their club and for the betterment of Celtic.

    He must be knackered.

It’s interpretation isn’t it. Some people will sat £12M for Wanyama = 2 x £6M transfers. Other will say that 3x £2M players + £4M in new contract rises + £2M in scouting and youth development.

Both are investing every penny in the team.

    My friends in Celtic,

We have been looking for clarification on Celtic’s position regarding playing against and being cheated by a club over at Greyskull.

    ————

its snake mountain, how many times.

he man was a tim ,and lives at castle greyskull

no credibility mate if you cant get the simple things right

  4. i dont hate PL the man.

I am sure he is a celtic supporter.

but no person at this club should earn £1m a year unless you can score 60 goals.

    he is not worth it.

  5. Transfer Fees

A transfer fee of say £10m will be received in incriments. We don’t get a cheque for £10m to cash when the players is handed over. There are then deductions. If the player does not ask for a transfer the remainder of his outstanding deal is paid in full. Sometimes the buying club will pick it up but it may be included on the fee. The remainder of the £10m fee will be used to pay possibly a buy on clause from a previous club and the rest will go into the club. For example Old Rangers received some payments for Jelavic recently. They just paid him off to his previous club a couple of years ago.

So you have what is left in the pot from possibly half the total fee for your budget to buy players. You buy a player for £3m and maybe pay £1m up front. You agree to pay the rest over 2 years. You pay the player a signing on fee and pay him £10k a week which is £500k a year. You also bring in a Bosman signing and because he is a free agent you have to give him a signing on fee of £250k-500k and a higher wage than a £3m signing because he has more leverage. You pay him £15k a week which is £780k per year. There you have it most of your transfer cash is gone for that particular year. You then maybe decide to sign another couple of players and that eats into the season ticket funds and you also have dross you signed the previous year sitting in the stand earning £10k-£15k a week for doing nothing and you can;t shift them. That all has to be factored in. Boerritger is a prime example. £2.5m plus about £10k a week. Roughly £5m spend over his contract for pretty much nothing!

No wonder we are addressing the scouting department and taking players on loan to buy.

Celtic are learning and changing their strategy to suit their circumstances and yet people slate them for it. I think the club are using every method possible to put the best team on the pitch. Guidetti is the main success the rest will probably go back. At least we have not got another Boerritger, Bangura, Pukki, Balde, etc, etc on our hands.

I follow Auldheid’s updates here and I’m imagining it’s a long long drawn out process and add to that the legal aspects I’m guessing PL isn’t going to be shouting out up dates from the top of the Concert Hall any time soon.

With recent events now starting to heat up down South and folk being nicked I’m guessing again that Auldheid’s patience game has a point and that could be that some of these issues which be naturally taken care of by the recognised authorities in good time.

Let’s reckon’ hope so I can’t stand the stench from the SFA much longer..

  7. Livibhoy

No bad for a youngster :-)

I don’t ‘hate’ Peter Lawell personally. I think that he’s done a reasonable job of steering the club through financially difficult times. Do I think he’s a Celtic supporter? I’ve absolutely no doubt that he is.

    However :-)

I don’t always believe him and I don’t always trust him. That’s not based on guesswork.

  8. weeminger-for me the line is a play on words mate,i missed the 2 x 6mil and/or 3×2 mil signings.HH

  9. Livibhoy….i dont hate PL..i dont hate anyone…i think he will be happy when thems are back…just my opinion…

  10. Saint Stivs,

I am only following the lead of the newsreader that prompted so many complaints from the zombies.

If it annoys them so much its good enough for me.

As for credibility I neither look for or crave it. Couldn’t give a monkeys.

    HH to you.

  11. PL had been rewarded with £10m + in his time at celtic.

he started on £140k plus £40k ish bonus back in 2004.

now he earns £1m cobined a year.

during that time the plc has invreased its turnover by how much each season ?

he doesnt deserve what he is paid.

its an easy job to keep this company marginally in profint by operating as an accountant.

  12. Quick question,

What time does one usually have to be at kerrydale suite for to be guaranteed entry?

  15. Hamiltontim

I think that is a fair comment. We all look on things differently. The man has to keep the support happy (good luck) the shareholders happy and the board. No easy feat.

He has to work out deals and probably spends a lot of time on deals me and you never hear about because they fall through. Football is a shifty business. Everyone is under cutting each other and out to get the best deal for their club. Then you have the English market. It totally skews everything we try and do. You think Peter Lawwell doesn;t get frustrated that a club like Stoke City can attract better players, better sponsorship revenues, more corporate monies and not to forget a great TV deal which is probably twenty times more than we get?

All he can offer is what the club have to players and they make their decision. He is already a villian in so many eyes you get the players pulling at the heart strings of fans when they leave like Joe Ledley. I would have stayed but I was forced out. No Joe lad nobody forced you onto a plane and made you sign a contract. Players leave because they want to. If they didn;t they say in an interview I love this club and I want to stay and force the clubs hand. Brown showed how it is done. Put a contract down and I will sign it. Job Done.

PL is doing the best job he can with the demands put on him. Whether you trust him or not is a different matter what I would say is nobody will get everything right and I am sure he has made plenty of mistakes but he gets more right than he gets wrong and there are not many CEO’s at Celtic who have done that. Like the footballing department if PL goes we will be scraping around the bottom of the market for someone who can fil the remit and the first question when he is apppointed?

    Is he a Hun?

Well done the club regarding the living wage. An about turn. Why are our board so petty minded. They are an embarrassment.

I will read up on the AGM later. On a train just now.

Read back and agree with all the comments on the RES12 progress, having also read the CQN update …………. Before everyone gets too excited lets be clear that the offer is to discuss it with full-time employees affected. Not part-time or zero hours (yes I too was also surprised we had staff on zero hours contracts) employees.

I may be being cynical but the tone, nature and direction of that ‘discussion’ will be important. I suspect there is an option to come back with ‘We discussed it and the ‘staff’ said no, please keep paying me less.

I also suspect that any move to pay f/t staff at £7.85 and pay p/t or xero hours less is open to employment law challenege but as Celtic don’t recognise unions (perhaps with the exception of the players union, the referees union and the managers union???)I suspect those people may be at a disadvantage in any ‘discussion’.
