Social Values headline Celtic AGM

1105

Our Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park this morning, was a more prosaic affair than last year’s.  Chief executive, Peter Lawwell, told the meeting last season’s on-field and financial results were “fantastic” in difficult circumstances.

He repeatedly referred to the “balance” required between immediate expenditure policies and judging the long-term requirements of the club, adding that in recent years, “Rangers went bust, Hearts went bust, and Hibs were relegated.”

For the first time the AGM heard from the Celtic FC Foundation chief executive.  Tony Hamilton was given a video slot alongside the chairman, chief exec and the manager and he spoke about how the Foundation was interwoven into the fabric of the club, from the top to bottom, and of our history.

The alleviation of poverty is a major target for 2015, building on work the Foundation carried out this year in north and east Glasgow, Inverclyde and North Lanarkshire.  Tony added, “If things weren’t tough we wouldn’t need a charity – but they are.

“We’re deadly serious about making a difference.” I’ll try to get the video, it’s worth watching.

Ronny Deila laid out his objectives for this season: qualification for the Champions League, win the treble, develop players and play attacking, attractive, football.  Peter Lawwell didn’t want to use the managerial transition over the summer as an excuse for failing to reach the Champions League, but suggested it was grounds for mitigation.

The chairman, chief executive and manager all liberally infused their comments with transformational effect Champions League qualification would have on the club next season.

The Celtic Trust proposed two resolutions, the first of which, concerning club-fan interaction, they agreed to adjourn.  In his video message, chairman Ian Bankier informed the meeting that the directors would oppose the Living Wage resolution, but that they had entered into discussions with the staff on the matter, proposing that the starting pay for permanent staff is set at £7.85 per hour, which just happens to be equal to the Living Wage.

In response to this Jeanette Findlay, proposing the resolution on behalf of the Trust, reached the microphone and tore up her prepared speech.  She did, however, urge the club to go the final mile and become an accredited Living Wage employer.

Peter Lawwell informed the meeting that he would be meeting John Guidetti’s agent within the next two weeks and that he is waiting to hear back from Kris Commons representatives on his latest offer.

Ronny Deila added that it was important for the club to retain its top players, giving Guidetti and Justin Denayer special mention, but insisted it was wrong to give into demands from any one player three times the going rate for other senior players.

BBC are correct technically. The orcs did come out of receivership only not in the way they report. The actually went from receivership to death.

  6. Unbelievable….. David currie saying hearts v. huns is the biggest game since rangers came out of administration. Surely there must be some legal precedent to stop this charade. Or is the face painter going to get her money and the truth has been hidden by Phil etc? Aye right.

I agree, in all my years watching pro youth, it appeared that boys had to fit the system rather than the other way about. Tony would have missed that. Your point about T.B is excellent, I think he’s exactly would Tony could have done with. The second I read your post it resonated with me. Also can I say David Bingham was great at Gretna pro youth, he really allowed the boys to express themselves and indeed was extremely skilful himself.

The system should fit Tony Watt?

What happens when we discover another youth, apparently more talented than TW? Change the system to suit him?

How about this – Tony Watt takes the advice of professionals who have actually done something in the game. Unfortunately the great TB is no longer with us. However, I personally think that, if TB were still with us, and gave Tony Watt advice, the outcome would be the same.

Only Tony Watt can help Tony Watt.

So far, he’s scored 3 goals in 15 games for Standard Liege. I hope he achieves his full potential following his own advice.

Just watched BBC scotland the hun reporter said rankers came out of administration no they did not, they were liquidated, why do we put up with this shite from the bigoted scottish media

  10. Came on to CQN a few hours ago while out and about and read comment after comment about how Peter Lawwell “wants Rangers back in the top flight”.

Did some reading of AGM and all he seems to have done is mention how much Rangers’absence has affected annual income.

Later, I get home and watched STV news and there is our Peter telling the world there is no way Celtic as a club will allow Rangers access to the top division other than on merit. He talked about sporting “integrity”.

One thing is for sure, the people on here who were earlier throwing accusations at Lawwell being desperate for the return of the Rangers wouldn’t know integrity if it crawled out their arses in the morning.

I was talking about the player having the chance to express himself as an individual on the park rather than being a product of an academy.

When did you see a player at Celtic shoe a bit of imagination. They are programmed to an extent to keep possession rather than attack a full back and use their natural talent.

One thing I agree with PL is lack of players coming through in last few years.

BT – my response was to Jimmynotpauls’ point that “… in all my years watching pro youth, it appeared that boys had to fit the system rather than the other way about”.

How would that work? Is the idea to just let players “express themselves”? There needs to be some structure, surely, otherwise why are there coaches there at all.

On TW in particular – his problem is himself. No-one else can fix this.

I agree the output from our setup seems poor – I would have expected more. I think that point was made by Peter Lawwell today.

    Good evening friends.

Just the one more sleep. Although that sleep, for me, might start in about 2 hours time as Mrs Baldie’s aff oot and I’m left in with just the wine and beer for company. But I’ve been told to watch “The Missing” on iPlayer (Mrs B already at episode 4) so just a quick dip into CQN whilst the ole fish cakes are a-cookin’.

  23. Just having a look at the co-efficent, at this moment we are sitting 50th place, if we can string a few results together and go further in Europa league and looking at other teams above us with the going back 5 year period we might break into top 40 for next season

  24. I have no doubts PL is a Celtic supporter, lucky enough to be employed by the Club.

Undoubtedly , he runs the club in a prudent way.

I have no axe to grind generally .

Some things however do grate me.

    We are downgrading our ambition.

We talk like a big club but don’t practice it.

I find it distasteful that the club had to be corralled into giving some employees the Living wage.

To me , the Celtic support and people like Jeanette , Aulheid and others are our social conscience and are vital as that board would just do whatever the hell they’d like.

I think Greenpinata mentioned earlier we should aspire to be like a Southampton or Brentford.

Sorry mate but , Oh my Good Lord!

  25. Personally I reckon the team shape should remain intact tomorrow, even with Brown suspended.
