Celtic released accounts today for the year ending 30 June 2012, a season in which they won the league and exited Europe at the Europa League group stage. Turnover was down less than £1m at £51.34m but bank debt rose £2m to £2.77m despite a £7.37m loss (the difference between the increase in bank debt and the trading loss is due to the amortisation of player registrations, which hits the accounts evenly over the period of a player’s contract).
Football and stadium income dropped by £2m and merchandising dropped by £1m while multimedia and other commercial income rose almost £2m. Football and stadium operating costs rose by over £2m. The drop in stadium revenue and corresponding rise in costs are indicative of the wider economic pressures. Inflation is affecting Celtic’s costs and Celtic fans’ ability to spend with the club.
With debt sitting at around 5% of turnover and a significant uplift in income this season assured, the club is in remarkably rude health this far into an economic downturn. Champions League revenue this season should have a transformational effect on how Celtic can forward plan, potentially reversing that £7m loss.
Economic headwinds are likely to supress key ticket and merchandise revenue for the foreseeable future but Champions League revenues seem immune from these challenges. The primary plan for this season must be to qualify for the group stage of Europe’s top competition next season. Get there and we can continue to operate with the existing cost structures (and more) and still pay our taxes!

Not a target missed, either at Sevco or the SFA.

That was amazing last night ……. For the first time ever, I slept 10 minutes into the alarm this morning….. Could not get to sleep last night …….. The true state of sevco is now there for the media etc to see …….. When QOS scored with THAT penalty, my phone went into meltdown?
Can’t believe I’m missing the game tonight, due work…….. What an atmosphere it will be …. Wonder if greengo will be whispering in sally’s ear soon ……….. LLLOOOLLL…..!!!!!
this fits quite nicely : If you change the word LAND for SOUTH in the Dubliners “the black velvet band”
i’ve been singing it all morning
“her eyes they shone like diamonds
i thought her the queen of the south”
watch them squirm.
A particularly bright , sunny morning here in Wearside, but the chill cannot shake the smile from my lips.
Only cloud on horizon is the fact I will be in leafy Hertfordshire tonight whilst my bhoy enjoys the CL night at Paradise. So , I will be in a good pub with good beer, an old freind (Sevco fan) for company but only Chelsea or Man U on the telly, still at least I am not Sally McCoist. that would be too much to take.
`mon the Hoops!

stevo, got similar from the decent folk at Amazo.
£1.70 cost saving on pre-order price. My copy of Downfall has a delivery date of Friday 21 for an intem ordered by credit card on 4th Sep.
The printers must be very busy satisfying demand for Phil’s book!
What a boon the cancellation of serialisation by the Sun has been for him.
Peter has a long way to go to reclaim his sharp suited status imo
Yesterday I suggested that Charles Green was goading the authorities into pulling the plug, so that he could profit from their demise with McCoist who let’s not forget is a fellow investor happy to comply.
Results like last night convince me further that the players know there’s something going on too.
Cup competitions are obviously famous for the underdog triumphing and as a club we’ve been there on many occasions but I’d have thought the situation The Rangers FC are in would be enough to sufficiently motivate the players to win every game just as a GIRUY.
That motivation isn’t there.
Why?

I also received the same email from Amazon informing me I have made a saving of £1.70 on ‘Downfall’. The price of a pint – or half a pint depending on where you go!
Cannae wait – will hopefully be here this week.
HH!!
Real saving on ole Downfall is £1.690p…
Big Nan,
Good for us, looking forward to a good read (I am sure also enfuriating at times too). Anyone know what the sales figures actually are?
PS Top Amazon tip – create a big whish list and keep an eye on it as it tracks price increases and decreases – you would be surprised how much proices move in short periods of time … save your self a few ££
Funny to think that Sevco almost certainly can’t afford to bump their manager.
As James Forrest so marvellously put it: ‘… a manager who knows how to talk the talk … but who cannot walk the walk.’
Still, all is not lost: I’m sure Ramsdens would be more than willing to lend Sevco this year’s trophy, for a small consideration … or to sell it to them for inclusion in Sevco’s budding list of honours …
FF
Folly folly
Read back to 23-29,,,still can’t find James Forrest,s post????
HH
Found it ,,,,,it’s at 23:39!

It could also be a raggle taggle bunch of crap football players coached by one of the worst managers in Scottish football history!!
Blantyretim..
You really do need to divorce Peter’s performance as CEO (very successful financial etc performance) from any personal reason for comments of this nature. You are a great Celtic fan / CQN poster, just need to balance the overall ‘picture’ …..?? ….IMHO
Ok, so Queens goals were offside, there should never have been a red for Jeremy Kyle and Aunt Sally reckons the orcs should have been awarded a penalty half way through the shootout, but…
…has anyone in the MSM looked at the replays of, or commented on, the wee ‘Gers first equaliser and noticed the hands of der orken player (Elbows??) on either shoulder pulling the Queens of the Stone Age bass player back as the ball came back over?
Naw, didnae think so either.

I suspect you’re more right than me. I just find it a little odd. I really thought there’d be more seige mentality on the go there. Anyway that’s enough about the new team trying to buy success.
Celtic ——- Benfica .
Italian Radio Preview ——19 /9 /12
I paraphrase ——
Celtic return to the Champions League after a long absence.
Benfica are favorites despite not being at full strength in consequence of suspensions and injuries .
Aimar is not certain to play . If he doesn’t play , Carlos Martins will take his place .
History shows that Celtic tend to beat Benfica in Glasgow whilst Benfica tend to beat Celtic in Lisbon . Current Celtic team is not as good as those teams ..- current Benfica team is better than those teams.
Benfica play attacking football. Their weak point is the defense but Celtic’s attack isn’t particularly good .Benfica should be too good for Celtic .
Benfica are clear favorites .
Mmm —–we’ll see .
Really looking forward to it . I find myself wishing I was in Glasgow [ a very rare thing ]
Lovely sunny day — mid 20s -way down south.
Forza Celtic !
This is how bad they are.
I’m beginning to think they should get to keep the old club’s history.
Just for the humiliation and shame the new mob will bring to the old club’s achievements.

Maybe Neil Lennon should cut out those remarks and post them on the dressing room noticeboard.
I can’t believe that you can still get 11/4 against Celtic for tonight: a fair price in my book …
FF
Hooper with a neat little dink over the flailing arms of the Benfica keeper – first half, 1-0.
Charlie Mulgrew with a glancing header from a wee Jamsie corner – second half, 2-0.
Benfica pull a goal back with 5 minutes remaining, 2-1, game on?
Naw, Miku to score a left foot volley from just inside the area a minute into injury time. He will sit down and smoke a pretend cigar in his celebration., 3-1.
3-1 FT.

18 September, 2012
At quarter past ten on 18 September 2012, a gathering storm finally broke. The sense of fun, of joy, of being on an adventure, that feeling of “optimism” surrounding Sevco’s “journey back to the top” came to an abrupt, and shocking, end. The general mood of defiance, the air of arrogance, the sense of unreality which has surrounded their exploits this season, was suddenly gone.
It all went, like piss down a trouser leg. Things will never be the same for this club again.
At that moment, when the full time whistle, in extra time, blew in the Ramsden’s Cup Quarter Final at Ibrox, and Sevco were taken to a penalty shoot-out, Scottish football changed again, irrevocably, totally. The final score was 2-2.
The penalty shoot out result was never going to matter. The end of it, and Sevco’s defeat, was never going to be the story of the night. The story of the night was the end of the adventure. It is no longer a fun-filled climb to the top.
This is only the start of a long, slow nightmare.
Tonight was the dawning of reality. Tonight has given Sevco’s fans a new sense of who they are. They are not a top tier side playing in a lower tier league. The standard of their team is married to their surroundings. Their position is precisely in keeping with their status. They are a lower league side, with lower league players. Football, in the end, is a meritocracy, and if you’re not good enough all the big talk in the world will not make you that which you aren’t. Sooner or later, the truth dawns.
Tonight was not a shock result. Watching extra time, it had a certain sense of inevitability about it. This did not feel like a result which would reverberate around the world, although it certainly will, based on a misguided view of Sevco’s status in the game. The truth is, this has been coming and a night like this was always in the post. There is no hiding from the facts.
This is who they are now. A team with no discernible quality. A team of free transfers and kids who weren’t good enough to win the under 18′s league some years ago. A team with a manager who knows how to talk the talk – at least in this country, where his words carry a weight grossly at odds with his ability and achievements – but who cannot walk the walk.
Their entire club has come to resemble the reflection you get in a fairground magic mirror. It looks bigger than it is, with every shape bent and twisted to resemble something it’s not. That image is not reality but a distortion of reality. Tonight, the mirror broke.
The media believes they are a big club, with players capable of “winning every trophy in the country.” Their fans believe the game cannot survive without them. Their manager believes these guys should be winning every game by five or six goals and that the problem is in their heads.
It is in all their heads. They are looking at the club through a distorted lens, which makes it seem bigger, more powerful and more important than it actually is.
From the chairman down, this club is the mouse that roared. Nothing about them right now suggests there is a quick, easy way back from the pit into which they have sunk. The idiotic behaviour of their chairman is not befitting a big club but one with an over-inflated sense of importance. The image of the club in the Craig Whyte era as the footballing branch of Trotters Independent Traders is actually more applicable now than it was then. With Del Trottter in the directors box, Rodney in charge of communications and Trigger in charge of team selection.
Tonight the truth hit home, and the cold reality of the next two years at least has been made shockingly clear. This team cannot be relied upon to win any game, let alone every game. Promotion is no longer a formality but a rollercoaster dance with death. The pain is not over, but just getting started, and the club is not safe but now on the downslope facing a death of a thousand cuts.
Am I gloating? Yes, and no. I am gloating because, in spite of a mountain of evidence to the contrary, this team believed that the name “Rangers”, which they purchased from a dead club, was like a talisman against the real world. They behaved with precisely the sense of entitlement that brought them low, with each fresh crisis bringing them no closer to an epiphany and the change of behaviour which might have changed their fortunes. The bubble of superiority is tonight completely burst.
There were a few – a very few – amongst their support who did not view the Third Division start-up as a positive. They saw it for exactly what we did; a dive over the precipice, a leap into the dark. Their voices were drowned out by the halfwits who “wanted” to go down, the better to spite the rest of the country.
The rest of the country, in the meantime, was laughing at the arrogance and ego which delivered for us just the result we wanted; a crippled, devastated “institution” on its knees, scrabbling around, like a beggar, looking for change in the dirt. Did they notice that they were giving us the result we wanted? Yes, of course they did … but blinded by hate and a need to believe in their own superiority they didn’t think too much on what reality would look like. They didn’t consider nights like tonight.
We did. Which is why we wanted them here. We knew there would be devastating evenings like this one, hammer blows against their smug stance. We knew there would be crushing blows against their big-headed arrogance. We knew their would be moments like this one, where their pride would be crushed like a rotten apple stamped on by a steel boot.
Tonight is the culmination of our every fantasy; a club called Rangers, playing out of Ibrox, knocked out of Scotland’s third tier cup competition by a team of amateurs and journeymen. This is the stuff of their worst nightmares, made real.
The sense of unreality is gone now. Tonight the sleep walkers are wide awake, standing amidst the wreckage that, in their dreams, looked pristine.
Sevco fans, welcome, at last, to the real world.
Things look a lot different now, don’t they?
Enjoy the next two years. We certainly will.
