Solid CL performers, realisation dawns at Ibrox

971

I remember some disparaging comment from sections of the Scottish sporting media regarding Mikael Lustig’s performances for Sweden at Euro 2012.  Mikael had only recently joined Celtic and was still finding his feet in Scotland.  In short, we didn’t have enough information to make an informed judgement before the Euros.  We do now.

His energy levels, speed, height, crossing and general levels of performance has been remarkably high and consistent.  Sweden handed him the job of subduing one of the world’s top three players at their recent World Cup qualifier in Portugal, Ronaldo was shackled, scoring only when he left Mikael’s area of the field.

There is a notion that this type of player, who can perform solidly at Champions League and international level, but who we can convince to renew his contract, is more important than the more stellar performers, who have an eye on the exit door.

Adam Matthews timely return from injury will compensate for Mikael’s absence as he recuperates post-op, but we’ve never looked as effective on the right since both of them were fully fit.

The reaction to yesterday’s AGM at Ibrox has been surprising, mostly as it surprised anyone.  The outcome has been a forgone conclusion for weeks (if not months), while the realisation of what the future is going to look like for Newco has finally dawned on a few.

A generation brought up to believe in sugar daddies will have to learn: expenditure must equal or be less than income over any given business cycle.

In this respect, I cannot figure why fans are so unhappy with the Newco board, whose central failing has been to spend far too much money on wages for a manager and players.  From what I hear, no one at the AGM demanded football budget is cut to an appropriate level.

As their new chairman said, costs will be cut; doing so is a financial imperative.  The current Rangers might play in the same colours as its liquidated predecessor, but things will never – eeeeeeeever – be the same again.

This afternoon is the final pre-Christmas posting time if you want your CQN Annual before the day:

  1. sixtaeseven,

It could have been the Third Division trophy – I presume there was one. The only trophy that the club has won in its short and undistinguished history. And as the last ever winners they probably get to keep it too/

You have mentioned before that KANO had a wee break thanks to the generosity of Rangers and Aberdeen fans in his local area.

They are to be applauded for that. A truly massive effort from them, and one which I am sure he appreciates with all his heart.

As do I. I appreciate every act of humanity. It is sometimes harder to do the right thing than to go with the flow.

But equally,I try not to find fault where there is none. For that would be an uncharitable act. And I always endeavour to apologise when I have done so.

I mail KANO regularly now. I’m sure others do the same. Whether he enjoys my witterings,I do not know. He can blame RAMIE if he has a problem with it!!!

  5. Sevco will surely run out of cash before the end of the season.

They could of course try and do another ticketus type deal and get an advance on next seasons tickets. Alternatively they could pursue paul ‘s previous blogs and do a lease buy back on Murray Park and Ibrox.

I really hope they go for that option and then siphon the money out the back door. If they do then it is truely all over and they have put the stake through their own heart!

  6. Bom dia,

Absolutely no Celtic (or podium posting) news from Brasil today.

Portugesa’s relegation appeal now set for Dec 27th and looks like they’ve a good case. Whether they’ll win it, or not is entirely a different matter, especially considering this is the THIRD time Fluminense have been relegated and then reinstated on a “technicality”

Brasilian marketing specialist, Pluri (which is actually quite an interesting site if you’re statto minded) have just published their annual “top” tables. Apparently, Celtic nuzzle in 95th place, just between Espanyol and Krasnodar in the top 100 most valuable clubs.

Elsewhere, apparently Palmeira’s new stadium (now at least a year behind schedule and won’t be used for the World Cup) has been voted best new stadium by Spains “El gol” website. Have to say it’s no looking too shabby. Judge for yersels…..

I cannot imagine what the fella has had to endure these last few years. It hurts to think of him like that.

I was speaking the other day to someone who has met him and his family, mainly in stopovers in Dubai,IIRC. We can only hope that they find out exactly what is wrong and alleviate his suffering. No-one should have to go through what he does. Every day.

Fortunately my mails are less frequent. But from what I hear of him,he is more than a match for most when he gets started, and that I would love to see!

I take issue with Stoke on a point of pedantry.

Including PORT VALE is like saying Gateshead is in Newcastle.

    Where’s GENE’S A BHOY’S NAME to adjudicate?

I do not. Many reasons to hate the people who run this country at the moment.

Particularly their ideology which is born out of hatred.
