Solskjaer back with old flame after over-shooting with looker

417

It’s been a fascinating day for Molde, who re-appointed former manager old Gunnar Solskjaer on a three year contract. The timing of this one is incredible, coming a few days after an international break, which would provide the perfect opportunity for the club to make changes and prepare for the challenges ahead.

After winning the league in 2014, their third Norwegian title in four years, Molde sit 7th with three games remaining. Recent form hasn’t been too bad. They have won each of their last two league games, scoring seven goals, and sit top of their Europa League group after drawing with Ajax. Interim boss, Erling Moe, had steadied the ship. You could argue he exceeded expectations.

Solskjaer won the first two of those titles, but his reputation faded in 2013, when an unknown young Stromdgodset coach stopped him winning three-in-a-row in 2013. He joined Cardiff City in January 2014 but could do nothing to arrest their slip into relegation and was sacked a month into their aimless Championship campaign.

He’s been carrying out various media and youth coaching roles since, waiting on the right job to come along. Molde have been looking for a permanent manager since parting company with Tor Ole Skullerud at the beginning of August. Solskjaer was reportedly their prime target back then but it looks like he’s held off until now, perhaps hoping for a gig in the well-heeled English game.

Apologies for the metaphor, but he dumped his girlfriend for a looker he knew from his student days, but who was way out of his league, so he soon found himself on the shelf. After spending months looking around he’s gone back to his old flame, who had let herself go but has got her act together in recent weeks.

I’m sure they’ll be very happy together. This is your time, Ronny. Beat them.

  1. I see that Celtic’s share price has PLUMMETED by 2.04% today.

That’s a MASSIVE COLLAPSE in the price from 73.5p to 72.0p.

Can I expect a job offer from the Daily Record Finance Editor anytime soon?

  2. Lustig is a lost cause for me, I’m sorry to say.

Mibbe we should ask the opposition not to tackle him to avoid further injury and time on the treatment table not earning his fat salary.

    Or play young Saidy.

    Aye!

Thanks for pointing out that the club pay all its employees the living wage.

So the issue is that some of the employees working for the firms that supply services at Paradise don’t.

Are we tied into contracts with these firms and will it only be when they are up for tender again that Celtic can lay down criteria for them to be paying their staff the living wage?

It may take a bit of time to get all of these firms to do so but if they want the gig then i guess they would have to.

That is only going to happen if our board actually want it to happen……

I really need to pay attention but considering about all my school reports said that i guess it will probably remain an ongoing issue.

Away win for me, ok maybe a draw.

Anyway decided to see if the 2015 accounts were available to check if my comments were correct re living wage.

The answer is yes, but only partially and may explain why The Celtic Trust are correctly IMO pursuing this point further.

“In November 2014, the Club made a commitment to consult with colleagues about raising the minimum hourly rate of PERMANENT staff to at least £7.85/hour. This commitment was delivered and the increase was implemented with effect from 1 July 2015.”

Note that the commitment was to permanent staff only.

“Included in the…wages and salaries is £756,000 (2014: £581,000) paid to agency staff.”

As agency staff are not permanent, then it is very likely that they will be excluded from this committment, and we as a club may therefore paying staff on a two tier scheme, dependent on whether their status is permanent or temporary.

  6. Didn’t Duff and Phelps try to sign Cousin just after Rangers went into admin?

Was it possibly Tore Andre Flo’s cousin?

  7. Thunder Road,

I’m not entirely sure. I assume celtic will be in some sort of contract with the agencies.

I think apart from celtic dragging their heels the whole issue is about the big shiny badge you get for being a living wage accredited company.

My own preference is celtic pay the lw equivalent or above and donate the money it will cost celtic for the ‘badge’ to charity.

  11. In the dim and distant past when I was agency staff at Celtic Ticket Office, I was on a higher wage than the equivalent Celtic employees.

  12. That living wage is as clear as mud, I’m only going with the answers in here, some say they are paying it, but in then say in there opinion they are not, some say Celtic are not paying it, some say they are, yup it’s got The Celtic Trusts paw marks all over it, and don’t be trying to kid me it’s not agenda driven, it’s agenda driven alright, when no one can give clarity on it, I smell agenda against the club, and for what? All to get so one from the trust on the board, well on there track record I hope it never happens, unless someone with commen sense steps up to the plate like a breath of fresh air and be honest with the fans, That’s just my opinion, same as they have theirs.

See Muir has done his best to even things up over the season by awarding a dodgy penalty to a team in green and white…

After Muir’s ‘performance’ at Fir Park, he had a lower league game last night, where he made an ar$# of it again, he has an SPFL game on Saturday. He will be approximately £1400 better off, before we kick off on Sunday, no Living Wage issues here.Reward for failure? Or maybe reward for getting his Master’s message across?

WHEN the draw for this season’s UEFA Europa League group stages put Celtic in Group A along with Ajax, Fenerbahce and Molde, few observers would have predicted that it would be the Norwegian side who led the way after the first two games.

But an impressive victory in Turkey followed by a home draw with Ajax sees Molde top of the group ahead of Thursday night’s match with Celtic in the Aker Stadion.

John Collins was as surprised as anyone at the Norwegians start to the campaign, but it means that Celtic will be well aware of the dangers Molde will pose on their artificial surface.

The Norwegians have also sprung another surprise just over 24 hours before the game, by appointing their former boss, Ole Gunner Solskjaer, as manager again.

Speaking at Glasgow Airport ahead of the trip to Norway and just before the news of Solskjaer’s re-appointment broke, the Celtic assistant manager said: “It would be great if we could get three points. That’s the objective. We’re going across to Norway to try and win the game, and then we’ve got the home game coming up against Molde after that.

“I’ve got a feeling this group will go right to the last group the way it’s shaping up. It would be nice to qualify before the last game but, first and foremost, we’ve got to get three points tomorrow.”

Celtic have drawn both of their opening fixtures, drawing 2-2 in the Amsterdam ArenA and then repeating the scoreline at Celtic Park against Fenerbahce.

Molde, meanwhile, beat Fenerbahce 3-1 in Istanbul before drawing 1-1 at home with Ajax, to leave them on four points.

“When the draw was made, most people didn’t expect Molde to be top of the group after two games,” said Collins, “but they’ve proved on the European stage that they’ve got their tactics right and they’ve picked up a victory away in Turkey and a home draw against Ajax, so we’ve got to respect them.

“Individually, they don’t have the same quality of players as other teams in group, but as a team they’ve got it right in Europe. Defensively they’re very sound, they’re compact and they hit you on the break. They’ve got good pace in the wide areas and up front so it’s got to be concentration from first minute until last.

“We started our two previous games very well, scoring goals, and that’s something we need to get better at – holding on to a lead, but we’re working on it every day at training and we know we’ve got to get better.”

The Celtic assistant manager also confirmed that Croatian defender, Jozo Simunovic, is in the squad although James Forrest and Charlie Mulgrew look set to miss out through injury.

What % of a Lawwell bonus is paying 180 Celtic employees a living wage equivalent to?

  17. Celtic agreed last November to pay all staff the Living Wage. This only actually came about 8 months later on July 1st 2015.

In doing so Celtic also took away the long standing bonus system which had been in place for those who would be paid the LW from that date. This had never been mentioned by the club in any of the negotiations which took place.

Many match day staff are currently supplied by agencies, there are over 400 of them who presently are paid less than the LW.

The aim of the Trust is to have all of these staff paid the Living Wage or above.

We want Celtic to become accredited because at the moment there is no guarantee that the club will increase wages in November to meet the rise in the National Living Wage. Consequently this could mean that those who received it in July may fall below it again next month.

In addition Celtic’s accreditation would result in the agencies who supply staff to the club being forced into paying the LW.

For those interested in genuinely debating I hope this helps.

  18. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I think Ronny should stick to Saturdays defence making changes in an important away game is to risky.Molde have shown they are a good team and should be shown some respect on there own patch. I would love an away win but a draw would not be a bad result come on you Bhoys in green. H.H.

    Cheers for the info.

How will these agencies be forced? Will it not ultimately be Celtic who will have to pay more to the agencies?

  21. The sitonthefence (JJ) guy mentioned in his latest blog that Ogilvie’s testimony to LNS was a master class of obfuscation.

Just to remind him and others of the sheer scale of duplicity Ogilvie was at the centre of, the following was posted on the JJ blog.

Campbell Ogilvie did not obfuscate to LNS – he lied to him.

Ogilvie knew the first ebts he instigated in 1999 were different (and illegal ) from the type he was a subsequent beneficiary of and are under appeal by HMRC. He made no mention to LNS.

He was able to keep the distinction secret because paperwork that should have been provided by RFC administrators in 2012 to SPL lawyers Harper MacLeod, which would have revealed the true nature of those early ebts, was not supplied.

This failure caused a date change to the Commission range and meant it’s terms of reference only looked at the later ebts under appeal.

This narrative with supporting evidence was given to SPL lawyers last year, who passed it on to SPL and SFA but they have ignored. Around 20 journalists were also informed but none have published the narrative and evidence but some of them have confirmed the veracity and accuracy of the consequences of the concealment, in one case saying it stinks.

This misleading of LNS is one of another concealment exercises around the same type of HMRC documentation involving CO and RFC in June 2011 that is being ignored to date by the SFA, (Res12) who continue to damage Scottish football through fear and incompetency.

The truth may have to wait in the court case queue but eventually it will come out.

By the way guess who sat on the same RFC Remuneration Committee in 1999 with Campbell Ogilvie?

    Yup Sir David Murray.

Sept 1999 the month and year RFC went off the rails.

  22. Not saying this applies to Celtic,(Ahem),but we all know how “Agencies”work. In 20 years dealing with agencies, granted,in the Middle East, every one of them are run and own by nothing more than modern slave traders. They prey on the poorest in the world to fill their coffers.I dont know for a fact, but I would be willing to bet that not one of this type of agency pays TLW.Agencies dealing with professional types are different,as you would know, but the one that Celtic,or any club, would be dealing with will be of the previously mentioned type.

You then have to take in the “Back handers”,or someones Brother-in-Law,being a director of said Agency,in the awarding of contracts.

Its a bad old world out there, but somebody has to live in it.

Sounds to me you’re suggesting Celtic don’t outsource on merit and are prone to a few back handers?

Is that some kind of handshake?

  25. The problem I have expressed with paying a living wage is who actually has to pay it and should it not be they who make the decision or at least be involved in the argument leading up to the resolution?

The money has to come from somewhere and given that somewhere is always going to be the support in some form or othrr should it not be the support who fund it if they feel so strongly about it?

I reckon that had the funding of the additional cost been part of a debate that said paying a living wage is something we believe Celtic should do, but not at the cost of current operations, football and non football.

So we suggest an annual uplift to ST prices of say £2 to fund would mean everyone taking on the cost of a principle that we all subscribe to as a club. Not as two parts of the same entity in conflict with itself.

That takes away the annual cost issue because the support would have mandated Celtic to meet the cost of the uplift from the supports pocket each year regardless of other budgeting factors.

Fair pay and play across the board that everyone is part of.
