Some consistency from Uefa, please

819

Of all the supporter-related offenses Uefa are disciplining football clubs on at the moment the use of lasers annoys me most (with the appropriate caveat for health and safety matters).

Racism, health and safety violations, violence flares are all appropriate reasons to sanction a club but it’s always bothered me that Uefa seem to let the continental fashion for shining powerful lasers into the faces of opposing players and managers was not tackled appropriately.

I was, therefore, pleased to hear Uefa disciplined Olympiacos for, among a rich litany of offenses, their fans pointing a laser at Anderlecht players during their recent Champions League game.  The Greek club have been ordered to close the more colourful part of their stadium for their last 16 game against Manchester United.

It will surprise few of us that despite the Greeks being sanctioned for using lasers, Milan have gone unpunished, despite their fans pointing lasers at Celtic players during our recent drubbing.

These games are supervised and televised from multiple angles.  If the use of lasers attracts a punishment, and it should, the rules must apply without fear or favour.

  1. I see rangers have a longer history of football financial chicanery than we knew.

From one of books about their early history :-

[Rows with the Press proved the only thing new in life is the history that isn’t already known. The Scottish Athletic Journal, for example, took Rangers to task in September 1885 with a stinging editorial.

They wrote: “The social decadence of the Rangers may be dated from the day Mr Peter McNeil resigned the match secretaryship and JW Mackay took it up. Then began that system of trickery which has brought the club to its present low level.”

The club’s agm in May 1885 listed an income of £804 against expenditure of £604 – approximately one fifth of which went to Mackay, a printer to trade, for the publication of bills, tickets and advertising.

In comparison, the printing bill that year at Queen’s Park, Scotland’s top club, was only £29.

The Journal noted: “Mackay proves his capacity for blood sucking by bleeding Rangers to the extent of about £100 … honestly, of course, all in the way of trade.

“It is a very profitable thing to be match secretary of the Rangers when it brings grist to your own mill.”

Mackay banned The Journal from the club but he soon became a historical footnote as Rangers returned to a position of prominence and first boss William Wilton came to the fore.”]

  2. Ha ha, rebels routed 2 to 1, a hammering.

What’s this about Finboggason- in August he was the new Gerd Muller, now he is the new Kris Boyd? WTF?

  7. One of the “dangers” of the Internet is….

    If we sign Finbogasson…..and he’s a dud….

Then you can blame all the Celtic supporters who have been shouting from the laptops for us to sign him……( used to be the rooftops…but we’ve moved on)…..

I have watched, with much interest, the number of posts, on many Forums, calling for his signature over the last month or so…..and I’m sure Lenny got to hear about it.

Also someone is due a bollicking for Pukki and Balde….they may come good….but it doesn’t look like good business to me…Hope I’m wrong of course.

  8. the long wait is over on

Now that thems AGM has been settled and no one got their way other than the board I wonder whether their fans will actually boycott as threatened?

The blue touchpaper ( see what I did there..?) has been lit.

Sit back and enjoy the firework show.

‘Shouting from the laptops’ …………. Excellent. I’m the biggest culprit. I’m now fears there will be a backlash against me if he turns out to be a dumpling (if we sign him of course). If he’s a hero, I’ll be on to claim the credit. :-))

  11. There have always been issues of Centre forward styles suiting one team and not another. Tony Cascarino scored everywhere he played bar with Celtic.

The prolific Jordan Rhodes has not been picked by WGS for Scotland because he is a fairly immobile penalty box striker and needs a team that puts the ball in the box a lot, a Wimbledon/Norway/MON?Stoke style of play. WGS does not want to play like that so Rhodes does not suit.

Kris Boyd could score against weaker teams but struggled against Celtic and CL opposition. Tony Stokes suffers to a similar degree but has time on his side. Guys like Niall McGinn can benefit from a counter attacking style that Celtic will never be allowed to deploy at SPrem level.

We need a player that fits. Just because, thus far, Pukki, Boerigter, Balde, Bangura and Murphy have not fitted in, does not mean that a ready scorer for Heerenveen will.

  12. So let me get this straight

Does todays voting instruct the SPFL to transfer the membership of HMFC to RIFC with immediate effect so we will be playing them on Saturday instead?

We should have read the small print

Re Finbogasson – the story I heard, from a very good source, was that the coaching and scouting staff were asked in the summer to vouch for him at the price we would have had to pay back then and they couldn’t give such an endorsement so our interest died away. Not saying they were right or wrong but the asking price was too high for them to support. If he comes it will be at our valuation not theirs.

    SFTB,

Of all potential Celtic center forwards you mention only one knows where the goals are, thats got to be an advantage, read a few who are dismissing fin because they didnt like his goals blame defence and haver that he doesnt look skilful enough but ignore he is playing in a better league, I will stick my neck out and say he would score a barrel load for us irrespective of how we set up. He’s not afraid to have a dig and hits the target regularly, howmany like that did you mention ?

Sounds to me like there are too many accepting the reduced expectations line, while the money already squirrelled away in the biscuit tin to cover the loss of support expected for the current phase of the sanitisation is becoming the new creed. We are sitting on £30M but afraid to spend 5, because the strategy is to turn Celtic park onto a corporate venue.

  20. I doubt they will have a boycot, the board there know they are onto a good thing, they will buy the season tickets next year, the new investors will come in with a little, spread and share the wealth, pack up there dosh offski, another new board voted in by thems that are there now, and so on and so on, all that board that are there now are in it for money, that’s what you don’t forget, and thems over there don’t get that, as someone said a couple of no surrenders, we are the people, we don’t do walking away, and they are off again, gullibility has no boundaries with this lot, it what they do.

Wikipedia lists his place of death as Gourock so it might be swimming or boating related. It does not list the cause of death nor the prime suspect.

    ………………………..

Apparently, William Wilton and his assistant William Struth hired a boat and sailed down the Clyde to Rothesay to celebrate a Rangers winning the League. At some point on the way back, Wilton was lost overboard. Only Struth came back and became manager of the club.

  22. Well now that the AGM’s done and dusted maybe the sevco board can get round to sorting out Sally’s pay cut.

  23. My friends in Celtic,

I seem to be a minority of one who really does not give a toss about events somewhere round Govan. Some sort of wake or similar I believe.
