Some lessons for Ange

153

Everything is rubbish again.  Five points to Livingston………, why not Juranovic on penalties?  All valid points.  Momentum that has been on our side for weeks, came to a crashing end, which I have no doubt affected the result at Fir Park yesterday.  It could be next year before we get another opportunity to go top of the table.

On paper, resting Kyogo worked.  There may be a time in the future it works, but it backfired on Saturday.  My thoughts went back to Martin O’Neill, who only rested Henrik Larsson against Motherwell in March 2004, between games against Barcelona.  Celtic dropped points for the second time that season but needed Henrik to come off the bench to score.  Martin learned, win the game first, then you can rest the precious few.

If Giorgos Giakoumakis is first choice penalty taker he is a curious one as he is on the field less than half of our playing time.  We would be in the curious position of seeing his presumed deputy, Josip Juranovic, take most of our awards.  Giorgos watched Josip score without flaw on two occasions, then was required to pull rank on Saturday.  It is great the manager has faith in two to take penalties, but for now, the rest of us need a reason to believe.

In any other season, dropping points so carelessly would mean our title challenge was in mortal danger.  It is a relief than Newco have performed only marginally better.  Whoever gets their act together first* will have an enjoyable May 2022.

*that’s going to be Celtic, obviously.

Jock Stein teams were encouraged to shoot on sight. Create panic and get deflections.

    ——————–

Good point Bamboo. At no time on Saturday did we create panic. Back in the day we would feed the bear, and Roy Aitken would go on a charge, creating panic (amongst us as well !). More recently big Ajer had developed a tendency to go for a wander up the park. The easy, and a times lazy, option is to just pass sideways or back.

To witness successful execution of this tactic, watch Youtube video of VvD v St Johnstone away, from a few years back.

  3. The Designated Penalty taker was having a nightmare game which continued after the penalty miss when he missed a chance to make amends. Looking at the photos he got his legs tangled In fact he looked like a dud overall. We shouldn’t right him off of course as he deserves another chance. Not next week at Dundee. He should be dropped.

Giorgios also should be criticised for the lack of shooting along with the rest of the team

at what point in the whole game did he receive a pass that would have allowed him to shoot ?

Every single player should be cable of scoring from a penalty 80% of the time.

    All it takes is practice.

  6. SS@2:38

Nail on the head, this is the problem i don’t know if GG or Ajeti are any good, when do the receive passes that gives them a chance to shoot. Both are box players and we keep crossing high balls into the box and more often than not our CF are on their own……………we don’t get enough bodies into the box and no plan B.

  7. I stopped celebrating penalties a good few years ago. I don’t know if this is due to poor stats by our players or being subliminally scarred by a few misses. I think Mark Reid was the best in my time

  8. PETERLATCHFORDSBELLY on 1ST NOVEMBER 2021 3:12 PM

Yep. If someone of Martindale’s calibre can read and effectively counter how Celtic play then it’s time to reassess.

It’s nice to watch when it’s going well but it’s naïve.

  9. Think Ange’s Giakoumakis decision is based on two things – 1) his previous successful record & 2) the need to ensure a decent scoring return from a striker, whom if we believe the headlines, he personally persuaded to join Celtic.

The first makes perfect sense, and the latter is not a ‘hanging offence’. However I think most managers would stick with the current successful, i.e. Juranovic, until he misses. No one at CP & beyond would be now questioning that decision, even if the end result was the same.

To have lost 15% of available points to Livingston is not title-winning form – indeed it may signal a scrap for the runners-up spot.

Sevco have been unable to field their best team regularly to date – fit again Jack & Kent will strengthen them.

I am not castigating Ange, but once again we are left wondering why those on the park and in the dugout are letting us down for the second season in a row.

Finally we see the ‘rubber stamp’ on the liquidation & death of RANGERS FC. The cul de sac that the Res12 promoters turned into years ago has now been demolished and wiped from the football map. The only other actor in the saga is the SFA – it too is beyond reach for different reasons than RANGERS FC. So punishment of Celtic is the only motivation left – that puts the the resolutioners in the same bracket as the GB on Saturday.

Having blown it on Saturday most of us as you would expect are all feeling pretty miserable, so is this you trying to cheer us all up? You can be your own worst enemy at times, nobody wants to hear that sort of stuff after the miserable weekend we have all had, give us something positive for a wee change.

    ………….

You continue to pass comment on RES 12….A subject that you have shown to know NOTHING about ?

Recently it was SFTB ( I think) who set you straight on some matters pertaining to RES 12, and gloriously FAILED to counter his arguments, despite having the opportunity to do so.

You know as much about RES12 than you do about taking Penalty Kicks.

Strange way to describe an Orange Order song, it’s neither a ‘ traditional Protestant’ nor a ‘folk’ tune. Most Protestants will never have heard of it outside Scotland and the Occupied Six.

  15. Crotia are the most recent World Cup finalists and currently high in the World rankings. Juranovic was a great signing by Celtic and on previous evidence he would have effennwell buried that penalty kick. Hate this barely a step or so back followed by a tame effort as unfortunately we witnessed on Saturday. How often have we seen these attempts fail in shootouts.

Also thought Kyogo would have played from the start for an hour when he is at his most lethal.

Aberdeen, Motherwell, Hibernian all on the road and Ferencvaros home, must not be forgotten are great results and the late chance to make it 5 wins on the trot. We have to be happy with despite Saturday with that form. The big problem for Ange is the Ralston Juranovic situation.

  16. Burying one’s head in the sand with fingers in both ears whilst wearing a green & white blindfold is akin to Blackadder’s ‘pencils up the nose’ sketch

Reasoned criticism is the life-blood of a good blog – CQN is the best Celtic blog going. Of course when one decides to post views they must be ready, quite rightly, to face reasonable push-back from those with differing views – trouble is there are some on here who apparently don’t know the meaning of the word “reasonable”.

Vitriol, name-calling, bile & profanity says more about the poster using it than the object of their abuse, or, the subject-matter of the original post.

Holding two thoughts in one’s head, e.g. the unconditional love of Celtic, together with constructive criticism of its performance, is as perfectly normal as it is desirable….in my opinion

I’m not saying you are wrong, your opinion is as valid as anyones, but talking up our weaknesses and at the same time glowing positively about the rangers, well its just not a sensible thing to be doing on a Celtic blog after a fairly demoralising weekend of football. You must know you are going to take pelters for it.

Mind you the Celtic Women’s team done their very best to cheer us up by knocking out the rangers women’s team in the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup, we now face Hibs in the semi. Definitely the highlight of the weekend!

  23. still annoyed that GG even considered taking the pen on sat even if he was the designated pen taker that no-one new until he missed the bl**y thing , truly unprofessional on his part as he was totally exhausted prior to taking it , while on the subject of crosses into the box by Ralston in the first half , GG movement was poor to say the least not once did he judge the flight of the ball or react to get to the front or back post only for to stand rooted to the spot , looks like a dud buy or is he still unfit for propose.

Sad news. BIG JIMMY if you are in touch pass on my best wishes.

I and i’m sure a lot of us aren’t giving up any trophy this season until it is done.

I really believe that we are in fine margins teritory this season. They aren’t as

consistant as last season and we have a chance.

The penalty miss is chip wrapping now, our thin squad is in a real fixture bottleneck

at the moment and the best we can do is keep behind them.

The Juranovic arguement at right back is difficult. Tony Ralston has done nothing wrong.

It would send out a terrible message to the academy players if he was dumped.

At the start of the season I would have taken your hand off to be this close to the top.

Lets keep it in perspective. Lots more bumps to come for all the teams.

  26. Paul 67,

Would it be possible to have an article on the Transport situation to and from Parkhead ( Celtic Park )

I know we have discussed it before, however the situation has since worsened and soon it will be virtually impossible to drive and park at the ground. This is no exaggeration as initiatives to ditch ” polluting ” vehicles will soon become very evident.

Imo this is THE most important issue facing Celtic and will hamper any aspirations we may have.

It would be prudent to liaise with GCC as soon as is practicable. Could an electrified road train link from the City Centre be feasible.?

Make no mistake, this is coming and we must be prepared. I hope and trust our custodians have already been on the case. Possibly even the much maligned BW could use his political knowledge and contacts.

  27. Henderson,Robertson,Shaw ,and few more of the Development squad ain’t going to cut it with Celtic,if they were any good they would have been knocking on the managers door long ago ,As for the manager and all his coaches which he inherited need to come up with.a better system of how Celtic players should play, the present system is awful actually it’s boring,so the message is change or reap the Consequences, look at what happened at Spurs today ,no results no job

  28. Fantastic tribute to Davie Moyes from Chris Wilder on BBC Sport website. 1000 matches as a manager and doing a wonderful job at West Ham. Chris Wilder was mooted for us, post Eddie Howe & prior to Ange – if things go pear-shaped, he could again come into contention…..if he’s not snapped-up sooner.

  29. So far this Season I have been enjoying the Football.

My fun came to an abrupt halt Saturday.

I am hoping that Saturday was a blip and we can get back on the horse this Thursday.

If we can stay within 4 pts of them up to end of year and strengthen in January, I’d feel confident we will win the League.

JHB is either a clown or a Troll, back talking about fighting for second place again.

Huns are Bookies Favourites to win League, Celtic are 13/8 next Hearts 125/1, then Hibs 175/1 then Aberdeen 375/1,

JHB Go down to Bookies & look for odds of Celtic finishing outside top 2 & put your money where your mouth is,

Definitely no “positive glow” about *Rangers – not in my DNA. I am being realistic. As things stand it seems our best bet is an Ibrox collapse as we are worse off this season than last – let’s hope so!!!

  31. Yes, If we continue to drop points in the same ratio as we have in the first 12 games we will end up maybe 2 pts worse than last year,

    I don’t see that happening.

  32. Hi Bhoys

A wee funny or ironic story I was told today

As we know the world’s great and good are here to sort out the climate.

Apparently loads of them living in Gleneagles for the duration.

So how do you get them to Glasgow in an environmentally friendly manner.

Easy hire a fleet of electric Tesla cars.

But the hotel doesn’t have enough charging points for to charge them. (i’ve been told only one)

    What to do 🤔

Hire 40 diesel generators to charge them problem solved.

Does wee Greta know about this?
