Some reasons why Celtic will drop a lot of points

960

I was surprised Ronny Deila thought immediately after the game that Dedryck Boyata’s red card was valid, from the angle behind the goal it looked a well-time tackle, but let’s deal with the manager’s complaint against the player, who put a challenge in when wrong side of the attacker.

We’ve see three Celtic central defenders in this position in recent weeks: Efe against Ross County, Erik against Inverness and Dedryck last night. Erik was outpaced by Jordan Roberts but instead of risking a challenge from behind his opponent, he stayed on his feet and forced Roberts to shoot under pressure. Efe clumsily barged into his opponent and Dedryck went to ground.

All three got their starting positions wrong, which could have cost a goal, but Ambrose and Boyata compounded the problem by attempting a recovery, also from a wrong position. Sviatchenko chose to put pressure on the player and leave matters up to his goalkeeper. Erik made the right decision, Efe and Dedryck made wrong decisions.

And before Erik relaxes in the glow of praise, it was his unnecessary barge into an opponent which conceded the foul which led to the corner kick Accies equalised through. Don’t give away stupid fouls and you don’t allow opponents to fire the ball into your box.

And yes, the goal we lost came from a corner kick (I’m assuming those who were animated earlier in the season about zonal marking somehow overlook the same lack of ball-winning skills from the same players now we’re marking man-for-man). I’ve never known a team to lose so many goals from corners. We have a collection of players who cannot follow the flight of a football when launched into their box from a corner.

I know there’s a belief that you cannot practice penalty kicks, as the pressure of hitting them during a match changes everything. This is nonsense. Our poor penalty conversion rate over the last five or six years has cost us trophies. Ironically, John Collins has the best penalty conversion rate of any player in Celtic history (who’s taken more than 5).  You would think he’d be able to sort this.

Poor technique is a consequence of poor preparation.

When Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring from the penalty spot it came as a great relief, as until then we were unable to create a genuine chance. A big part of the job at Celtic is breaking down packed defences away from home. There are largely two ways to achieve this:

1. Master the act of quick and precise passing

2. Have target men and wide players who are excellent at crossing the ball.

If we don’t have either play in our locker we’re going to drop a lot of points.

I would get Moyes in now , Rd who I genuinely had high hopes for now appears like a dead man walking

It would give him ( Moyes) more time to evaluate the current squad and maybe also a cup win too

Using a golfing analogy, I see Ronny as a guy who goes for birdies instead of the safe par. As a result, he scores a lot of bogies. Should he take the safer par option or strive to improve to the level necessary to make more of those birdies? Ronny believes he has what it takes to make the birdies. A proportion of the support does not have Ronny`s faith. Pars win the League;birdies win CL Qualification; bogies lose the support.

All of that said, my sense is that Ronny’s an integral part of a larger project of which PL has ownership, and Ronny won’t be going anywhere unless it’s of his own volition.

What’s quite apparent though is that there has been no obvious change of approach to the way the team plays, despite copious evidence that the approach isn’t very effective. Whether in defending set pieces or in open play, the current Celtic approach is fraught.

We’ve signed 2 dozen players since Ronny joined the club, and it’s a struggle to identify any that could be considered to have improved the team.

Coming on nearly 2 years since Ronny joined, there isn’t a great deal of evidence that suggests his thinking has evolved in that time. That’s a long time to be standing at the dugout, watching on as the same mistakes are re-lived week after week.

The players change, the system remains, the results stay the same.

Grant Kerr This is about the 100th anniversary of the moment one of our closest neighbours finally said, “Enough is enough!”, to a British Imperial regime that had overseen hunger-genocide and convicted criminal maintaining law and order on the streets. Scotland owes Ireland a debt of contrition, in my opinion, but we can’t even fly a tricolour outside some cooncil buildings in Lanarkshire? Never mind that the Easter Rising was led by a Scotsman, who’d Irish heritage and protestant wife – a man who was shot by British troops while he was strapped to a chair, unable to stand. Pat Kane should be utterly ashamed of himself! Folk like him seem to approach the issue as if it’s a matter of Rangers and Celtic fans, each as bad as the other, who must be treated with kid gloves. Heard that jazz all my life; from folk to lazy, or scared to make an actual value judgement. This is about blatant xenophobia, and I’m glad at least one journalist in this half-nation sees that clearly. less

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether Euro2016 will impact on our preparations or the qualifiers?

Whether we will be looking for a new manager and/or bringing in new players, who may be involved in that competition.

Personally, I think our January recruitment

has been influenced by the need to have our squad in place.

Even though Ajer won’t be joining till then, he will be up to speed, having started his season in March.

Ronny needs to stop being so naive with the press.

He’s obviously an intelligent guy and must know by now they’re no friends of his or ours.

  14. It’s a shambles and Ronny is finished. Publicly hanging Boyata out to dry is unforgivable and utterly stupid. The performance with 11 and 10 men last night was pitiful, as it has been far too many times.

  15. Just heard the stat under Ronnie 12 red cards only 3 victories, weak mentatility pervades this Celtic team, and it will not change under his management.

Well-balanced article, Paul. Not sure if Ronny really thought it was a sending off. Maybe just didn’t want to give Boyata a get-out by blaming the ref?

Was nervous when I saw Leigh step up to take the second penalty. Always think it’s better for a different player to take a second one.

Seems to me though that some twats on here are happier when Celtic do not win as it suits their narrative of running down Glasgow Celtic.

    About penalties …

It’s about confidence, and Griff is an instinctive striker, Taking penalties gives him too much time to think and he doesn’t strike the ball firmly enough.

o Make your mind up early where the ball is going – don’t change mind !

o Run up confidently (no stuttering)

o Strike the ball hard – pace is sometimes enough

o Aim for the top half of the net – they are very seldom saved.

o Put a second penalty same place as first – keeper will generally think you will change sides.

When I played, I took what I called “Tommy Gemmell” penalties – I started by run up from the edge of the box and belted the ball past the keeper. Only 2 I ever missed I tried to place them low in the corner and the keeper saved them.

The main reason we drop so many points is standing rather forlornly at the front of our dugout!

We have an amateur coach who is totally unsuited to the demands of being in charge of a club our size, in a league like ours!

Does anyone on here really think a real professional like SAF or MON or even WGS would have thrown DB under the bus last night?

Even if they thought he was in the wrong they would have backed him in public. Nor would they have stood idly by while young Tierney was assaulted!

The guy might be nice enough but a winning manager for us he will never be!

Oh and by the way winning the league in its present manifestation don’t count for me as winning!

Does anyone really think that we will be any better next season?

Me neither. At the risk of offending the uber Tims on here, I’ll admit that I haven’t even gone to the last two home games because what is on offer is so predictably poor!

We need change as soon as possible to reinvigorate the club.

Currently we have a team full of Vic Davidsons, nice footballers who will win very little!

You have written an excellent article.

Although you do not say it , I suspect that like me you are now coming to the conclusion that Ronnie is not up to the job.

It pains me to write this.

Unfortunately, I think I have defended the indefensible for too long.

I expected Hamilton to equalise last night.

This team have let our manager down badly.

Only 3 years ago I would have backed us against anyone at home in Europe , now I’m not confident against anyone.

That is the measure of our decline.

We are playing poor, papering the cracks.

Reluctantly, I say it’s time for RD to go .

It is also time for Big Pete to go.

  26. Hello again all you young rebels.

Should be sleeping now as it’s the middle of the night here in

Oz but i’m posting when i’m half pashed and i know i shouldn’t

but Celtic does that to you don’t they? my observations on the

game, after watching it for the umpteenth time if Griff scores

the second penalty it’s all over but I’ve noticed before that any

penalty he hits to the keepers left is always waist height and

saveable, Boyata didn’t need to make the tackle he had the

speed to shepherd the guy away from goal, and Ronnie made

a big mistake in publicly castigating him instead of highlighting

the thuggery of some of the H A tackles, he should know by now

the msm will jump on anything negative about our club.

The upside for me is were still 7 ahead and i’m headed down to

the rebel town on the peninsula for a day with our fellow Celts

i’m sitting looking at the wee mhans full hoops strip laid out on

the couch and it always makes my heart flip when i see him

strutting his stuff with them on, i’ll say to him when he’s up

” Go and practice your keepy uppies in the garden ”

but i know he’ll go to the grassy bit out front because whenever

any tims pass in their cars they give him a toot and he loves it

    think he’s a bit of a poseur.

There won’t be much discussion about the game or Peter Lawell

or are we a diddy club now in the world ? all i’ll see is loads of

hoops thousands of miles from home just happy to be with each

other singing the songs raising money for deserving causes and

when you think about it I’ve never seen any of these supposedly

massive clubs like Barcelona , Bayern, Real Madrid, or Epl giants

gathering their fans together for days like ours, wonder why that

is ? maybe there not as big as they think and i only have to look

at the faces of our Aussie guests and they know the true story.

Anyway better get to bed, need to get down to our bash early

tomorrow and help PADDYMACOZ erect the gazebo and fix the

flags on the trees , i know hell get himself tied in knots if i don’t.
