Some reasons why Celtic will drop a lot of points

960

I was surprised Ronny Deila thought immediately after the game that Dedryck Boyata’s red card was valid, from the angle behind the goal it looked a well-time tackle, but let’s deal with the manager’s complaint against the player, who put a challenge in when wrong side of the attacker.

We’ve see three Celtic central defenders in this position in recent weeks: Efe against Ross County, Erik against Inverness and Dedryck last night. Erik was outpaced by Jordan Roberts but instead of risking a challenge from behind his opponent, he stayed on his feet and forced Roberts to shoot under pressure. Efe clumsily barged into his opponent and Dedryck went to ground.

All three got their starting positions wrong, which could have cost a goal, but Ambrose and Boyata compounded the problem by attempting a recovery, also from a wrong position. Sviatchenko chose to put pressure on the player and leave matters up to his goalkeeper. Erik made the right decision, Efe and Dedryck made wrong decisions.

And before Erik relaxes in the glow of praise, it was his unnecessary barge into an opponent which conceded the foul which led to the corner kick Accies equalised through. Don’t give away stupid fouls and you don’t allow opponents to fire the ball into your box.

And yes, the goal we lost came from a corner kick (I’m assuming those who were animated earlier in the season about zonal marking somehow overlook the same lack of ball-winning skills from the same players now we’re marking man-for-man). I’ve never known a team to lose so many goals from corners. We have a collection of players who cannot follow the flight of a football when launched into their box from a corner.

I know there’s a belief that you cannot practice penalty kicks, as the pressure of hitting them during a match changes everything. This is nonsense. Our poor penalty conversion rate over the last five or six years has cost us trophies. Ironically, John Collins has the best penalty conversion rate of any player in Celtic history (who’s taken more than 5).  You would think he’d be able to sort this.

Poor technique is a consequence of poor preparation.

When Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring from the penalty spot it came as a great relief, as until then we were unable to create a genuine chance. A big part of the job at Celtic is breaking down packed defences away from home. There are largely two ways to achieve this:

1. Master the act of quick and precise passing

2. Have target men and wide players who are excellent at crossing the ball.

If we don’t have either play in our locker we’re going to drop a lot of points.

Atleti winning Madrid derby 1-0 makes Barca hot favourites for La Liga. They have a game in hand and are 5 its clear of Alteti and 9 ahead of Real (who still have to come to Canp Neu.

Zidan’e’s team looked short of ideas against a team that has conceded only 11 goals this season. Old CR7 might just been the wane – he is 31 now – and without him Real would look very ordinary.

And the sheepies drop 2 points at home so no real damage done last night. Interesting that Rooney is out till April.

How sad, what a shame, never mind !

NEIL LENNON has claimed Scottish football will only be taken seriously by outsiders once a competitive Rangers are back in the top tier.

The former Celtic manager is one who believes the Premiership has missed the tension and drama of Old Firm matches, and the competition of the two of them going for the league title.

This is not a point of view shared by every supporter, especially those who follow his old club.

Lennon played at a time when the Glasgow derby was one of the biggest games in European football. It was, of course, during this period when the mismanagement of Rangers eventually led to their liquidation which subsequently meant the club having to start again in League Two.

But if the Ibrox club are unable to challenge for a few seasons, something that is a distinct possibility, then for the game in this country to flourish, Lennon was adamant that Celtic must become regulars in the Champions League once again.

Asked in an interview in The Guardian what he felt the perception of the Scottish game currently was in England, the now Bolton Wanderers manager said: “That’s a very good question. I don’t think the Scottish game will be taken seriously again [on the outside] until the balance of power is an equilibrium again with Celtic and Rangers.

“That will really attract the attention and capture the imagination again. If that’s not the case then Celtic in Europe is very, very important. They are still a huge club with a huge reputation.”

Lennon also revealed he has not given up hope of one day returning to Celtic where as player, captain and then manager, became one of the most loved and legendary figures in the club’s long history.

The Northern Irishman left two summers ago when he guessed, correctly as it happens, that Celtic in his own words were “downsizing with the squad.”

“It was the right time to leave,” he said. “There was always the opportunity that I could be back there some day. What I miss about it is the intensity and that opportunity of winning every week.

“We had dominated for three seasons and the club was sort of downsizing with the squad. I always felt the Champions League was the competition to be in and I wasn’t sure we would be able to do that again with the squad of players that we had. So it was time to go. Four years was a good stint at it.

“Do I regret it? No. Would I go back? Yes, eventually. I was there for 14 years, I have such a great affinity with the club. In some capacity, I would like to be around the club again at some stage in my career.”

  9. So the great scottish masonic conspiracy goes awry and deprives Aberdeen of 2 points today so surely referee wil find himself in front of the heid goats on Monday

Or maybe it will be Ronnys saving grace that Aberdeen are just that wee bit more pish than Celtic are at present

  10. Back in December I had to pick LMS first round teams for my bhoy and myself. I picked Celtic for him and Man Utd for me.

Both lost at home to Motherwell and Norwich.

He wasn’t around this week so I had to pick again. For him I went for Celtic on basis that lightening doesn’t strike twice.

    It does!

And for me I knew that if we blew it at Hamilton Aberdeen would fail to take advantage and so I went for the Dons.

    Delighted to be out LMS.

    An Tearmann,

    Thanks for your response.

Due to the timing of Euro2016, I think that we will go unto the qualifiers with what we have.

This worries me, as I think we have an imbalance in the squad.

Too many ostensibly creative players, who are relatively inexperienced and a dearth of solid no nonsense types, who know the score.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Ronny has the game head to steer us through a series of knock out ties.

If he is to remain, I would replace Kennedy and Collins with someone who can add pragmatism to our style.

JK surely has to shoulder some responsibility to our defensive inadequacies.

Wednesday night is a very important game for us.

  12. Paul67

I’m not for reading back and I’m sure it’s all been said about Celtic’s latest ‘tragic’ loss of points in Hamilton,

But I was surprised by Ronny’s comments regarding Dedryk Boyata’s perfectly legal legitimate tackle, that caused yet another opportunity for Thomson, to exercise what he’s good at.

Not surprised even for CQN at the disrespectful posts regarding Ronny Deila’s capabilities, and maintain steadfastly that Celtic at best would be just the seven points clear of the pack, even with a proper ‘Jurgen Klopp’

The market in which we’ve bought is determined by finances, and it matters not whether we have Ronny and you don’t like him, or somebody that you do. The Celtic squad with a more defensive coach over the piece

( one League ) and another on the way would be in roughly the same shape.

It’s all irrelevant in the grand old scheme of things.

  13. Just listened to the great warbo (aka the wizard of oz) on Snyde there, that cnut is getting freelance to speel any pash he wants…btw, he is now a proud owner of a company car…a Robin Reliant.

    Cheers for that boab.

  14. Well cqn you now have Neil Lennon telling us directly he left because the club were downsizing the squad.

Now tell me. Why did we make the decision to downsize the squad? We could afford not to so why do it?

This mob running Celtic are a disaster. It’s disgusting.

  15. BSR…

Some posts have been over the top regarding Ronny but even a stalwart like yourself, must see our team lacks leadership on and off the park.

To me a panic is setting in with the army of the orcs appearing, most just want us in a position to nail thems to the mast and don’t think Ronny is cut out for the task.

I tend to agree with that. HH

  16. WBA 3 up on Palace and just hit the post – not a bad first half from them. Berahino scored a sweet volley too.

  17. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

Last night we passed a couple of points ( in my mind at least)

    1. We are surely past any notion that Ronniw will be here next season?

    2. We are too late to change manager this season

So we need to support him. We need 5IAR.

But let’s not confuse our short term support with anything longer term.

  18. TBJ says Wee Oscar Knox is in heaven with the angels on

So after the weekends football we are still 6 points clear … I would have taken that yesterday at this time

Leigh scored another but will need to practice penalties. . That’s a good kick in the arse while losing nowt for the privilege

Ronny has put a but of a noose around his own neck and I think his time will be up in may – hopefully the club are looking for and maybe even talking to a new management TEAM . But 5 in a row is getting closer anyhow

Craig Thomsons performance yet again anti celtic. .. don’t suppose the club will complain as they hardly ever do

Dedryk unfairly red carded … will the club appeal … doesn’t look like it when our dumb manager tells BT sport it was the right decision . Anyhow I’m happier with Charlie and erik at centre half’s on Wednesday and beyond

Anyone notice when the keeper kicks the ball to the right wing big lustig NEVER wins it in the air

Adam Rooney joins Johnny hayes on the treatment table at Pittodrie. Good to see were not the only ones with injuries to key players

  20. Sips

Their is panic and its more because we are raphael scheidt and at this point we should be as strong as we have been for years.

We are looking over our shoulders remembering the past when we should be in a position of strength and not seeing this laurel and hardy ash we are now being subjected too.

It gets worse when the boss looks beaten and blames the player for a perfectly legitimate tackle.

Even worse we get kicked about week after week and no one says anything.

Then we read johnjames where he thanks our club for not interfering and stopping them cheating and ripping off the football world.

Damn right its a panic because at the moment we look like a bunch of weak will amateurs from the top to the bottom of our club

    —————

What is downsizing – is it?:

    A) Cutting squad numbers

    B) Cutting the wages bill

It can’t be A, if you count our players – and it’s not B, if you study and understand our Annual accounts.

So please tell me what it is we have downsized?

We should have qualified for the last two CL groups – we were in eminently winable positions going into the final game each time.

If we had qualified, would you still say we have downsized?- Neil left because he wanted a piece of the EPL and he thought he could get it, like Lambert and Alex Neil, through the Championship – he left when he thought his stock was highest.

Only thing that has downsized is our revenue, due to the aforementioned CL failures.

Finally, if we had not sold players, and instead paid them EPL wages – would they have stayed? – I think not. If they had we would be £50 million in debt.

  22. TBJ says Wee Oscar Knox is in heaven with the angels on

    Winning captains

I have suggested that a few times

I think ronny would make a decent assistant to an older wiser tougher manager .

We should find that manager and offer ronny the assistants job …

  23. Now is not the time for constant bickering over the manager and team selections , with 11 games to go now is the time to get behind the manager and the team and get this title won, plenty of time following that for everyone to have their say.

Could we bring in an experienced manager and keep Ronny as his assistant

    *****

Did you read my post @5.32 ?

It worked well for Brian Clough and Peter Taylor.

Lennon had the opportunity to work with RD, but declined……as did Keane.

  27. No manager worth his salt would step down into a number 2 job – he would be admitting that his whole philosophy had failed – it’s out of the question….and no new man would keep as it could undermine his authority with the players – clean break i.e. whole management should go if a change is made.

  28. Why should or would any potential new manager want yo keep Ronny as No2 ?

Is our team fitter ? Hungrier ? Better game intelligence ? How many players has he developed into better players ? I see a full team that is heading backwards at an alarming rate

I would replace him by Monday with Brendan Rodgers, and let Brendan run the football team and signings
