Some reasons why Celtic will drop a lot of points

960

I was surprised Ronny Deila thought immediately after the game that Dedryck Boyata’s red card was valid, from the angle behind the goal it looked a well-time tackle, but let’s deal with the manager’s complaint against the player, who put a challenge in when wrong side of the attacker.

We’ve see three Celtic central defenders in this position in recent weeks: Efe against Ross County, Erik against Inverness and Dedryck last night. Erik was outpaced by Jordan Roberts but instead of risking a challenge from behind his opponent, he stayed on his feet and forced Roberts to shoot under pressure. Efe clumsily barged into his opponent and Dedryck went to ground.

All three got their starting positions wrong, which could have cost a goal, but Ambrose and Boyata compounded the problem by attempting a recovery, also from a wrong position. Sviatchenko chose to put pressure on the player and leave matters up to his goalkeeper. Erik made the right decision, Efe and Dedryck made wrong decisions.

And before Erik relaxes in the glow of praise, it was his unnecessary barge into an opponent which conceded the foul which led to the corner kick Accies equalised through. Don’t give away stupid fouls and you don’t allow opponents to fire the ball into your box.

And yes, the goal we lost came from a corner kick (I’m assuming those who were animated earlier in the season about zonal marking somehow overlook the same lack of ball-winning skills from the same players now we’re marking man-for-man). I’ve never known a team to lose so many goals from corners. We have a collection of players who cannot follow the flight of a football when launched into their box from a corner.

I know there’s a belief that you cannot practice penalty kicks, as the pressure of hitting them during a match changes everything. This is nonsense. Our poor penalty conversion rate over the last five or six years has cost us trophies. Ironically, John Collins has the best penalty conversion rate of any player in Celtic history (who’s taken more than 5).  You would think he’d be able to sort this.

Poor technique is a consequence of poor preparation.

When Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring from the penalty spot it came as a great relief, as until then we were unable to create a genuine chance. A big part of the job at Celtic is breaking down packed defences away from home. There are largely two ways to achieve this:

1. Master the act of quick and precise passing

2. Have target men and wide players who are excellent at crossing the ball.

If we don’t have either play in our locker we’re going to drop a lot of points.

  1. GMS also missed a one on one early in the away leg against Inter last season. He’s a player with good technique but you can almost guarantee he won’t score in these situations.

  2. TBJ.

Charlie missed a pen against St Mirren at Hampden when we lost league cup semi to them in 2013, I dont think hes taken one since.

  3. Comparing Messi with GMS???? I would suggest we compare GMS with the young lad from Ajax, about 18 years old who ran half the length of the park against us to calmly slot the ball home.

He never looked like he would miss, any of us confident when we see GMS or James Forrest run in with the keeper to beat.

Technique and practising of the situation seems to be sadly lacking.

Selective memory on here, the 80s were amazing by all accounts….. I must have missed it 85, 88 and 89 were maybe 3 good days in May and no jungle even there to witness them

    Aye.

  6. Never let left footers take pens…generally .too obvious….as my previous post….

Their natural position is to lean and hit the ball…thus ball goes left to right…..

I know there are exceptions…but not as many as my take..

  7. I can remember back in the 90’s at one of our games when a large group of Borussia Dortmund fans, who had been in Glasgow for their teams CL tie at the huns, leaving via the trackside and conducting the singing as they went. Did this really happen or have I retreated into a senior happy time of my own making?

  8. Just in from watching the rugby – with Kirsty Wark and her dugs (neighbouring table) cheering on Ireland – hard work but no prizes for all the effort.

We were seriously sh!te last night but enjoy ‘status quo’ after the 1-1 lucky white heather draw today at Pittodrie.

Feck! Jimmy Greaves was right – it’s a funny old game!

Yes. They were sitting near me and singing uncomplimentary songs about our dear deceased Glasgow neighbours.

Our problem is a mixed bag…

Ronny… some don’t deem him fit for the job as he was a cheap option!

Like most I was prepared to give him a chance with his new ideology and training!

    Can’t see it.

The player pool, of which I don’t think he has had an opinion on!

    Can’t see it.

Which brings me to the crux… From top to bottom, we have digressed due to penny pinching…buy three and roll the dice rather one proven player with maybe no sell on value is a no no.

Let’s not kid ourselves, we won the battle, the war continues and by feck… Those cnuts are preparing for it…on field and off.

I remember we had played them in the late 80’s and met a few of their supporters in bairds. We, as a club, struck up a friendship with the club and that was where the bumblebee top came from. Happy, unsuccessful times.

Consider the STATE WE ARE IN compared to the day Deila took over.

    Please consider this.

We are so far behind in terms of team, spirit, progress, performance, consistency it’s no longer up for question whether or not Deila has to go. It’s a matter of when.

  13. Owen

Of course I lead all the surrounding Celtic fans in severely repremanding them for their lack of courtesy towards our Glaswegian kith and kin.

    Aye right!

One night I stumbled on Paul Lambert’s farewell game for Dortmund on the old Sky tv and the reception they gave him will never leave me.

I loved the Dortmund team of that era and like the club.

  14. Last one from me tonight on the anti Celtic agenda.

How much has Celtic’s revenue increased year on year in line with the other major leagues around us?

What’s that you say our TV deal is less per year than English clubs get per match never!

Have season ticket prices risen year on year?

Hang on we actually knocked £100 off but the media claimed it was only a doomed attempt to hang on to fans who missed rangers. The same media that hailed Sevco’s £50 reduction as a masterstroke in business terms.

Celtic’s total turnover is less than a relegated club in the EPL receive from TV alone, surely you jest? No.

    Sack the board anyway.

Hvartski Jim and Owen, there were some Dortmund fans at the league cup final last season and bumped into some at a league game earlier this season.

I get the impression we are more popular in Germany than we are here.

I know guys who went to Stuttgart thirteen years ago when we played there , who have kept in touch since with some of the Stuttgart fans, some of whom have come to our games.

Before the cup final in 2013 , there was a Bayern fan outside the south stand, he had travelled overnight after his team won the champions league at Wembley , to try and get a ticket for the cup final. He was asking some of our support if any spares were on the go.

  18. Dallas Dallas

I seem to remember we played Dortmund and overturned a 2-0 first leg defeat at home by winning 3-0. The Dortmund guys we met were fantastic. The cologne supporters in the next round were good guys too. The result wasn’t. The little Swiss guy cannot remember his name destroyed us. Happy times, when Celtic were crap but the supporters were real.

  19. Dallas…

We will never be accepted by all in Scotland but as football becomes more international, our reputation outside Scotland is and will be precious to our future. We have been internationally focused since our early days is and must guard that reputation. We must root out the morons who tarnish our image by their behaviour.

Hugh Adams was a Rangers man but he understood our international potential.

I was in Stuttgart too. Man was that crazy. Myself and my wee sis ended up in a bar overlooking the main square. The bar for some strange reason allowed us in but not all Celtic supporters. Mad time had by all. Still remember the row caused by the Belgian bus driver throwing a glass at the Turkish German barman which caused the Irish men to be refused service. Not me of course I had captured the hotel maitre de by asking him for a cigar cutter and light he thought I was very cultured and continued to serve me and my wee sis.

  24. Just watched ‘I believe in Miracles’ the BT Sport documentary on Nottingham Forest. Thanks to those who recommended it on here. What a story: 2nd division mid-table to double European Champions. A huge Scottish influence led by ‘fat bhoy’ John Robertson and the woefully underestimated John McGovern , what a player. Simple but very effective football.

When I see what Ranieri does for Leicster , and what Gus Hiddink does for Chelsea, then I would advocate the appointment of one of Europe’s old school European managers.

If the managers job was ever advertised,I think we would be amazed at who would want it. Instead we get puppets Lawwell controls. Any new manager worth his salt, would tell Lawwell to stick to number crunching, chase John Park, and leave him to manage the team and any transfers in and out. It won’t happen of course, step forward Owen Coyle. My choice from the left field is Harry Redknapp, fast attacking football, well organised old school type, never heard any of his players speak badly about him, stick in Willie McStay and Tom Boyd to give it a Celtic connection.
