Some things are more important

I know we are in the middle of a storm with the prospect of the San Siro, not to mention St Johnstone ahead.  I also know the only thing you want to read or write about is how we are going to resolve our problems, but there is more to Celtic than football, specifically the Foundation.

The history poverty is clear, the poor suffer more from an economic crisis than anyone.  2020 has been a terrible year to be poor and many more people are now poor than a year ago.  Your Foundation stepped in early in the crisis and continues to work on our behalf.  There has been practically no fundraising this year: no badge day, no bucket collection or Ghirls for Good.

The Sleep Out, which takes place each winter, goes ahead on Friday night as Stay Up for the Champions.  You can participate from your home, details here.  If that is not possible, you can help in other ways here.

We are so much more than just a football club, the Foundation is evidence of that.

We’re launching Celtic: Fifty Flags Plus One, an anthology of how Celtic won each of their league titles today.  Starting with our first title in 1893, it details how Willie Maley brought consistent glory, then the sparse successes over four decades before Jock Stein arrived in 1965 and the more contemporary wins since.

It will rekindle memories you had forgotten and give insight into how the leagues were won.

  1. Climate change/Global warming or what…..maybe the fires of hell are being stoked for our board to be forked ….I said forked….into their eternal combustion engine. Anyway …Glasgow….Decemeber…..and I’m out for a rattle around town and I’ve got a T-shirt and a jumper on.

Mind you come January and February, you’ll probably be able to store the Covid vaccine on your mantle-piece.

Anyway….strolled up from the Gorbals towards Charing Cross via the city centre…..George Square was ‘resplendent’ in its Moulin Rouge finery. Well as the caption says Bright and colourful…..maybe a wee bit too blingy for me, but it’s all a matter of taste……..

…….although to be fair, there is no chance of it being missed by German Bombers!!

As you disappear up yer own erse with tripe like that …

I don’t think you will be in a position to hear what I say.

Now back to the club and its current issues — any ideas or thoughts on how to improve matters?

Or is it back to your Eeyore impression with a few excuses for PL thrown oin for good measure.

  3. Watching the game on Sunday early on I thought if this wisnae Celtic I would turn it off, we are really really boring right now and have been for a wee while.

I’m not putting this on Lenny either as it’s a style, possession football, we have been playing for quite a long time.

But this is NOT the Celtic way, what we are known and renowned for since our inception when we gubbed a deidco side, not their swifts as the revisionists like to now tell us.

We have through the years signed players worthy of passing through the Parkhead gates for over 133 years, and still do but our system is broken at present.

Although we can look back at the exciting goalscorers that have played for the club we also had some great defenders, in fact we signed the best attacking centre half in the UK by sitting on his doorstep even though he had turned Hibs down as he wanted tae stay with the World Champions his native Renton.

The Big Mhan used tae say he would rather win 5-4 than 1-0 as the former was what the fans wanted.

In fact in my lifetime I can recall going up tae Tannadice and were 5-1 ahead right after the ko for the 2nd half yet hung on for a 5-4 victory with a defense that consisted of 5 international defenders, in “harper’s a barrel” style an arab scored a hat trick that day.

Were we disappointed at the end, nae way we were singing and dancing heading back down the road as this was the Celtic way.

A couple of months later after taking an early lead we went in at the half 1-3 in a SC tie against the Hi Hi coming back in the 2nd tae lead 4-3 only for Thirds tae level it before the end, oh and we had 6 internationals in our defense this time.

4 days later with the replay being shifted tae hunden due tae the anticipated huge crowd we gubbed a very good Thirds side which contained Hilley, Harley and Gray 4-0.

3 days after this exciting night, on St Patricks Day we lost 0-1 at Broomfield where a fan threw a black pudding at Bobby Carroll allegedly shouting “that’s two puddings on the park now”.

No done yet as 18 month later again at Parkheid against the Hi Hi we were 4 up in less than quarter of an hour, with new signing Paddy Turner scoring the 2nd of his only 2 goals for the club, and yet it was us hanging on for a 4-4 draw at the end.

But there was no “the cry was no defenders” out there as we did have good ones but the Celtic way was the attacking way, we were there tae entertain the crowd.

That philosophy though would cost us a place in a European Final 8 months later when we threw away a 3 goal lead in the semis as Bob wanted us tae play attacking football as that was the Celtic way.

Almost 3 years later we did park the bus when he played Stevie on his own up front in Prague and replaced Yogi with the Buzz Bomb as he would be better at carrying the ball out of defense along with the wee mhan.

He continually apologised for this practically until he left the game but admitted it was a necessary evil.

4 weeks to the day he also said prior tae the great night “We don’t just want to win the European Cup. We want to do it playing good football, to make neutrals glad we won it, pleased to remember how we did it.”

After we had won it on the same night he also said “There is not a prouder man on God’s Earth than me at this moment. Winning was important, aye, but it was the way that we have won that has filled me with satisfaction. We did it by playing football. Pure, beautiful, inventive football. There was not a negative thought in our heads. Inter played right into our hands; it’s so sad to see such gifted players shackled by a system that restricts their freedom to think and to act”.

This part should be duly noted by all and sundry “Our fans would never accept that sort of sterile approach. Our objective is always to try to win with style.”, and mibbees, just mibbees this is why we had the demonstration on Sunday night, let’s face it we are scheitd right now and have been for a very long time, trophies or no.

We have good players but they are sitting in the stand, he also said and our current coaching team should try and adhere to this quote “The best place to defend is in the opposition penalty box.”

Also worth noting tae the mhen on the park “Cups are not won by individuals, but by men in a team who put their club before personal prestige.”

I remember after hearing MON might be coming that we would turn into Leicester O’Celtic and then thinking so what as long as we win trophies again. I was willing to compromise our good name and reputation for a bunch of baubles and so it looks as were many others.

But it’s now time tae get back tae our roots which made us one of the most respected clubs in the game.

Our management team and board members should also remember a Jock quote “We all end up yesterday’s men in this business. You’re very quickly forgotten.”

Jock was a very wise mhan and we were so lucky tae have him, he NEVER put his career before his principles.

  5. I think goalkeeper situation is the least of our worries.

I don’t believe any of our results would have been any different with either CG or FF in goals.

  6. I wonder how poorly we will play at the weekend when league points are at stake?

Not sure I can see the squad putting in a shift for NL anytime soon.

Thursday is a guess the cricket score competition.

I fear that even if the squad were to stop playing games the rot has set in so deep that it would need a surgeon to remove the bad attitude.

NL doesn’t deserve this but PL played on his emotions for an easy life and the we are paying a heavy price.

”More importantly, how on earth did your lot not get Ivan Toney for £5m from Peterborough when he was available. 13 goals in 13 matches for the Bees. Another win away tonight at Rotherham who should be called “The Choppers” not “The Millers”, 3 yellows and a red.”

  19. SFTB @ 10:20pm

    You posted

“The reason for our anger is primarily our league form and the fear that the 10 is being lost, or to be fair to some of our more emotionaly volatile fans, already lost. And that is on top of being knocked out of CL qualifying, the Europa Group running and the LC.”

You’re right, to an extent, about the reason for anger bring primarily due to our league form. However, that’s people realise that the League is still possible to win with 75 points to be played for but they are watching in astonishment as the Board sit idly by and watch what we are watching week after week in a number of competitions and fail to take the remedial action which still might deliver the league title to Celtic Park at the end of the season. A fairly small number of posters including myself have been posting since last season that our manager is not good enough and that we would fail to progress in Europe and that we were actually regressing and losing out on huge sums of money. Posters have pointed out that our league form has not been awful with 9 wins, 3 draws and one defeat. However, performances have been indifferent and it is our form in other competitions that have made fans aware that if nothing is done by the Board then we will squander many of the 75 points that are available to us in the league and we will fail to win the title that would give us TIAR. The two games against Sparta Prague were simply appalling against a team whose form had been as poor as our own if not poorer. Neil Lennon had a huge number of supporters at the start of this season. I couldn’t understand it like a handful of others on here. As far as I could see they were ignoring the telltale warnings and the evidence laid bare before their eyes in terms of European performances against beatable opposition and dire performances against Sevco domestically. The support for our manager has gradually dissipated and I would imagine those who wish him to be retained form a minority. The dissenting voices have been proved right

though we’ve been called a few names along the way. We will not win the League if Neil Lennon is allowed to go haplessly stumbling on. Every point is now precious. The players are the only ones who can put the ball in the net and they want rid of Neil Lennon. Anyone who can communicate effectively with them and get them to perform will be an improvement on what we have currently. So a change before Sunday is absolutely necessary to secure 3 points.

    You also said,

“Sure you could boycott SBs, merchandise, Celtic TV and the Superstore. But every positive action has a negative consequence. Harm Celtic financially and you advantage your rivals so where is the benefit? “

This is the only action open to Celtic supporters to teach this Board a lesson. Their whole attitude has been that they will do as they please, when they please and supporters can like it or lump it and ‘By the way make sure you behave yourselves’ (Bankier).

The Board are doing exactly the same kind of damage that you posit Celtic fans will do by boycotting goods and SBs. They are harming the club financially and helping our rivals by tolerating a manager who is failing and has cost us £60m in two seasons by failing to reach the CL group stages. I don’t hear you calling out the Board or pointing out the consequences of their inaction.

Many reasonable fans have been accused of ‘Entitlement’ over the last few weeks because of the levels of anger expressed at our performances. Like myself lots of these fans have followed Celtic during wilderness years like the period following our first NIAR and during Sevco’s own NIAR. I’m pushing 70 and I’m raging at the sheer mismanagement of the club by the Board and by the squandering of our position of financial superiority that should not have allowed our rivals to have laid a glove on us. During the aforementioned wilderness years, Celtic never held such a financial advantage so we won some and we lost some and we renewed our season tickets. The situation just now is totally different. This is all down to arrogance and incompetence. We showed our faith at the start of the season by buying our virtual season tickets and by not claiming a refund for last seasons unplayed games. We have been let down badly and by the Board.

  20. Winningemmel, I have no doubt they did meet, my uncle used tae run the Vale Emmet prior tae that the Renton Guild.

One of his former players went on tae captain a top english side while another Peter Goldie, missed the 7-1 game due tae injury.

My da used tae help him and we would often go and watch the Vale. My da’s claim tae fame was going through tae swinecastle for a juvenile cup game and one of the star players got injured so they helped carry him off the park. Willie Fernie.

Thanks very much for asking about me not posting any more.

I did get scunnered by some of the conduct of some posters who were niggling at each other about 2 or 3 months ago and a few more recently but the main reason has just been that I have been overwhelmed with work recently.

Also the adage “football without fans is nothing” has never wrung more true. I just can’t get up for watching games in empty grounds. It’s not just our performances it’s the lack of atmosphere which make the games seem of little importance.

Should we win ten in a row, I will only get half the pleasure.

Should we lose ten in a row, I will only get half the disappointment.

Good post! Very well said. I recollect being labelled a ‘panty wetter’ for expressing similar thoughts at the start of the season. My reaction was to invite the pejorative slinger to have carnal intercourse with himself, which was rather naughty of me. He then responded that I ‘ was for the watching,’ which amused me no end.

I also expressed disbelief at the hubris laced posts concluding with HWG10IAR and wondered if the posters were watching the same performances as I. Time enough to say it at the end of a season if you win it, rather than partially through a season where we have not had one single decent 90 minutes, and now experienced our worst home spell in 62 years.

    ……………….

I remember the “you’re worth the watching post” 😂. I’m a paid up member of the don’t count your chickens before they hatch society too. I’ve learned in life that you can’t assume anything. To be honest though, at the start of the season I thought we would win the league. The first game against Hamilton though when we scored 5 we could also have lost 5. It started to deteriorate from there.

I think we can still win it but not if we think we can wait to January to start with a new manager. We need immediate change.
