Something extraordinary

206

Since Brendan Rodgers’ arrival in 2016, Celtic have played 27 games at Hampden, suffering only one defeat.  Three of those games went to penalties (against Hearts, Aberdeen and Newco), with Celtic managing to win each of them.  The only blot on the record was the extra-time loss in the 2022 Scottish Cup semi-final against Newco.

The ‘neutral’ venue has become anything but; we have also lost one of our last 27 domestic games at Celtic Park (two, if you count European ties).  Lots of ingredients go into a successful run like this.  Hampden cup ties bring their own intensity, and the more you experience this, the better adjusted you will be.

There is also a reinforcement effect of winning.  “We win here” must be front of every Celtic player’s mind when they walk out the tunnel.  I also suspect that Celtic can raise their game above their normal performance level.  The player’s attitude was questioned by the manager after the defeat to St Johnstone earlier this month; there is no chance of an attitude deficit on Sunday.

The years between 2010 Brendan arriving in 2016 were not so kind.  Ross County beat us at Hampden in the Scottish Cup and League Cup.  Rangers and Kilmarnock beat us in finals, while there were semi-final losses to Hearts, St Mirren and (controversially) Inverness.

That’s seven defeats in a period which saw us win eight times at Hampden.  It is almost impossible to gain perspective when you are in the middle of something extraordinary, but leaving Hampden as winners 26 times from 27 visits is astonishing.

Surely he’s been offered a contract long time ago. Rodgers has said that the reason he hadn’t signed, thus far, wasn’t due to money.

I agree that the number of Ads damages the site ( the number of Ads is the hosts choice – we don’t pay for it after all) as , for me , does the fact that clicking on the site automatically stops background players , such as Sky or Prime , running – a pain in the butt if watching a game.

on the recommendation of someone on here I now use Brave which runs ad free and smoothly, albeit the background player problem still exists.

Overall , I still find the quality of posts here ( excluding my own ramblings ) good enough that CQN remains my Celtic site of choice.

    BILBAO DEFEND YOURSELF

RANGERS OUT! On the upcoming April 17th, Athletic Club will play the return leg of the Europa League Round of 16 against the Scottish team Rangers F.C. As has happened on several occasions this season, various far-right and fascist fans will come to Bilbao. Rangers, rivals of Celtic F.C., have historically organized several ultra groups, with the most active today being Union Bears (UB), Rangers Riot Crew (RRC), and Rangers ICF. All three, like the majority of Rangers fans, hold monarchist, unionist, reactionary, and far-right ideologies. For this reason, it is common in Rangers’ Ibrox stadium to glorify the British Kingdom and its massacres and abuses, display fascist and Nazi symbols, show pro-Israel flags, or hear xenophobic chants against citizens of Irish origin. In this regard, Rangers fans often use the motto “No surrender (to the IRA)” and sing a song made in its honor, which has generally been sung in many English football stadiums. This motto was used by Ulster unionist paramilitaries in Northern Ireland (such as the Ulster Volunteer Forces) against the Irish national liberation movement. In addition, UEFA has closed the ultras section of the stadium on more than one occasion for singing the song in honor of the “Billy Boys.” This group was a Protestant fascist group that attacked immigrants of Irish origin in the 20s and 30s. Among the notable friendships of Rangers’ ultra and hooligan groups are the ultras of Olympique Lyonnais, Hamburg, and Chelsea. Among the former, the relationship between RRC and South Side Lyon, the latter made up of French ultranationalists from Lyon, is notable. With all this said, we must be clear that neither Rangers F.C. nor their fans are welcome here; even less so in the current context of the rise of fascism and the reactionary movement. Therefore, it is absolutely important to intervene against fascism, and on the day of the match and in the days before and after, to defend our streets and our spaces and minds.

I sure hope wee Greg signs the contract. He has taken a lot of stick at times from our fans, but what a fantastic servant he is. He also plays that inverted role much better than anyone else. He takes chances and yes teams target him with the high ball. but even our tall defenders are getting outjumped by smaller players. I remember when TB got moved to left back in the late 87-88, and beginning of 89 season before he left. Tommy Burns was not the fastest player in the world but what he lacked in speed, he made up for in positioning and timing. He had a wand of a left foot. If Greg doesn’t sign then he will leave with my best wishes for continued success in his career. What a moment for him last week to walk onto the field with his newborn. That will stay with him for life.

  12. I am one of the daily readers who rarely post . This blog is still my go to for all things Celtic and if I don’t log on daily I feel I may have missed out . What sets this blog apart (and it is by far the best Celtic blog ) is the quality of Pauls articles whether I agree with him or not , the quality of the contributor’s , the quality of the disagreements ??? the humour , the passion and never ever forget we are living through a golden era for Celtic so please please never ever take any of this success for granted its precious .

  13. A good friend of mine has a son who works as a journo in a small Manchester newspaper. He was saying there is a rumour which will not go away that both manchester clubs are sniffing around Brendan. Rumour only, but kinda think there could be something in it, hmmmmm!

On another topic, I think Celtic should give the Hunbigots aguard of honour to there achievement of being second again, wouldn’t that be nice, eh

Did they really do that to the Sagrada Familia? I didn’t think even they would be as low as that.

By the way, thinking of Hugh McIlvanney and John Rafferty brought to mind an article in The Times (of London) by Geoffery Greene (I think) about 1970. It was the occasion of Bobby Moore’s testimonial. He urged his readers to get down to Upton Park to watch the Lions to see how football should be played. No higher praise possible in England at the time.
