Souness: loan was for work, makes interesting dates claim

496

Graeme Souness today told a Daily Record reporter that he received his EBT LOAN from Rangers because:

“I was doing work for Rangers.

“I was in between jobs. I was going to scout for Glasgow Rangers at that time”.

Payment in return for “doing work” is what this whole business is all about. Payment for “doing work” is taxable. It cannot be remunerated via a non-repayable loan.

Mr Souness was manager of Blackburn Rovers from 14 March 2000 until 6 September 2004.

As Blackburn manager, he signed Tugay from Rangers on 17 May 2001. He requested £30,000 from the Rangers EBT scheme five weeks later.

“In between jobs” Really? These dates make that an interesting claim.

  1. “members” of the Klan have never had to think that the rules ever applied to them…………..

    Why would they?

  2. Afternoon Timland from a warm hun free mountain valley.

Souness knew what he was saying imo, 30K to him wouldn’t break the bank, and you never know, maybes someone tried to throw him under the bus, all very interesting as to the timing.

We’re seeing hard questions being asked to people that aren’t directly connected to Sevco. Are they about to go down and are looking for the bogey man?

Let’s say there are about to be a lot of side letters presented. They say that as the club they have to honour them but can’t afford it. Administration or worse (doubt it).

Probably nothing near like being true but one can daydream.

    Transferred from previous article:

IKI@2:19 and BADABING – Souness has ‘blown the gaffe’ on the EBTs.

By admitting that he received it for “scouting for Rangers” – i.e. payment for personal services rendered, ergo wages, and not a loan.

With the present furore surrounding personal tax arrangements, the Supreme Court verdict is a forgone conclusion.

I would submit that although Resolution 12 has undoubted merit, the bigger and more definitive fight is the misuse of EBTs – backed by a positive Supreme Court decision, the ‘house of cards’ that support the retaining of ‘cheated’ titles, cups and Euro licence, will surely come tumbling down.

I hope that ‘the penny is starting to drop’ with those who have been castigating Celtic for ‘keeping their powder dry’

At present, all the damning evidence against the Ibrox dwellers is either under appeal (EBT) or circumstantial (RES12) – when the Supreme Court rules all this will change.

PS – I hear that the TRUSS has demanded that Peter Lawwell and all board members publish their tax returns – however they will not ask Ronny and management, or any of the players and their agents to do likewise.

  6. Well I guess it’s possible that he did the scouting when he WAS between jobs and only asked for the money at a much later date. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t get the EBT for work done FOR Rangers, which – as Paul says – raises some very interesting questions about the nature of the scheme…

  7. Phyllis Dietrichson on

The thing that intrigues me about the Souness revelation is – surely he must have been coached in giving the “correct” answer? Instead he looked surprised to be asked the question.

I expect a “clarification” statement before the day is out.

  8. South Of Tunis on

It would be good to know the names of the still anonymous recipients of @ 15 EBT’s.

  9. It is strange in that his low EBT amount and his continued high media profile mark him out as the most likely to be able to pay back what he owes.

I am naturally suspicious as to why

    a) He was the one asked

    b) Why he replied after so many years of no comment

I believe The Record article indicates that former Rangers players have admitted, on an off-the-record basis, that they were assured they would never have to pay these amounts back.

So what is the incentive for Souness to speak out so wildly and unconvincingly at this point.

My paranoia antennae are on high alert here

Totally missed that. I’ll be astounded of forehead if that cut makes a story in the print product and in particular within the pages of the Sports section. The DR online product and the print product are two seprate competing entities as far as I believe.

That’s strange. I would have thought this type of question would have to be set up in advance, with a pre-rehearsed answer.

I’m disappointed that The Daily Wrecker and it’s sister paper The Sunday Past, are making news on the best blog (sometimes it can get a bit unreadable) CQN, The Clumpany blog, which I do read, has a piece that was on his blog, about the Daily Wrecker, I new it would be a truthful read coming from the (Clumpany Blog) So I did read it, and it was a good read, not that it will make me start reading the Wrecker again, or it’s Sister rag, Nothing in this world would make me do that. I stopped reading that paper about 20 years ago ,because of the anti Celtic crap that came from their page

    s

Paul, your correct, a penalty will be awarded to the other team, nothing more certain than that, their training sessions will be about falling when a Celtic player comes within a yard of the opposition, and you can rest assured they will be ably assisted by the men in black, they can have a choice of many MIB, they will willingly volunteer to give them a penalty, and no doubt assist them even more, by sending of the supposed offender.

I feel a bit tainted after reading something from that anti Celtic Paper, have to go to bed.

Souness was obviously taken aback by getting such a question from the Daily Ranger….

  20. He didn’t have to answer though did he? He could simply have said that it was a matter his lawyer and accountant was dealing with and that appeal was ongoing – so couldn’t comment.

So it’s interesting he did comment.

After all the shenanigans surrounding Sir David Murray’s MIH and associated companies recently being ‘wiped off the face of the earth”, leaving him and his family with the decent ‘offcuts’ – what if SDM now appears in the Panama Papers – could this be behind Graeme’s ‘confession’?
