Speculation and invention

108

We are in the summer, when without football games, sports pages are filled with less certain content.  Transfer ‘speculation’ can cross the line between pure invention and an angle a club or agent is trying to make a reality.

For example, if an agent believes Celtic are likely to lose a left back, he can be motivated to link his left back client with the club.  Clubs are usually courteous to agents, so they’ll formally ‘look’ at the player, whether there is interest or not.  Often whether they look, or not.

This is where we are with left backs right now.  Celtic are trying to keep Greg Taylor, Greg has yet to agree a contract, so everyone knows Celtic could have a vacancy in that position.  I expect names being mentioned as interesting Celtic are a mix of idle speculation and agent-fuelled promotion.

  1. The Battered Bunnet on

Reading Weeron’s post from earlier, and some of the replies to it.

You know, it’s easy to forget that CQN was the original social medium for so many of us. It went live to the world long before Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and has outlived the likes of MySpace and Friends Reunited and so many others back in the day. We stumbled upon CQN at the birth of social media, when perhaps ordinary social etiquettes were the natural default and self-moderation was typical.

I’ve made good friends here, and sadly lost some of them too. That’s a measure both of the nature of this site and the length of time it’s been going. It has lasted through an entire generation span of life let alone of football dominance.

Nothing stays the same and it’s inevitable that as a new generation of Celtic supporters joins the movement – and as an older one diminishes – that the characteristics and nature of the blog will change too.

The blog reflects the people who use it, and if the original players have grown tired, if the young team don’t recognise the monikers of old, if they’re oblivious to the centrally important role CQN played during less tranquil times, then that’s just the way it goes.

CQN remains what it always was – a meeting place for Celts to share information, stories and humour, and for the like-minded to disagree.

Thanks Paul, you’ve played a blinder all the way.

  2. TBB – well said.

Since leaving Scotland (for the second time) in 2007, CQN has been my go to for updates on Celtic.

Also made a few friends from it and the trollers are an easy scroll by (feel sorry for them).

My thanks go to Paul for being the ubiquitous link to the club I love and to the posters for their perspectives and updates.

  3. Sondre Orjasaeter ?

I won’t bother learning to spell / pronounce that until I know he has signed 🤪

  4. Plenty of fantasy transfer stories with inflated figures for Sevco players in the Record, penned by Huns Christian Andersen😁

Kieran comes back to us a more mature and more polished player.

Even his teeth, for instance, seem to have an ultrabrite polish they never had before his trip dan saff.

Must be something in the water ;)

Re his deputy; get the young, left-footed Centre Back – Dylan Leonard – in, and have him be KT’s alternate and understudy. Know I’m like a broken record on this one but, really, a smashing prospect who adores Celtic all the way fae Melbourne.

  6. Can anyone tell me how many matches KT has started and finished the whole 90 minutes ,in the last 3 seasons?

THE BATTERED BUNNET on 12TH JUNE 2025 12:48 PM

    Absolutely spot on.

  8. Quick lookahead to the CL qualifiers, as you know Celtic will play a single play-off round in which we’ll be seeded. The team we are likely to be paired against would be one of – Maccabi Tel-Aviv, S Bratislava, Basel, Quarabag and Sturm Graz. I’d add Dynamo Kyiv and Lech Poznan to that list as teams that have a chance of progressing from the earlier rounds.

Our chances of progression are highly dependant on who we draw, but we’ll look at the teams in the mix across three key metrics of UEFA coefficient, squad value, and best 11 value (Transfermarkt).

On UEFA coef. Celtic have a coef. 38, and the teams above range from Maccabi Tel-Aviv at 37.5 to Lech Poznan on 19. This equates to a “win chance” against this metric ranging from 50.3% to 66.7% respectively, and averaging across the possible teams at 57.4%

On Transfermarkt squad value, Celtic’s is currently 155m euros, with teams ranging from Dynamo Kyiv at 82m to Quarabag at 22m. Which equates to a “win chance” ranging from 87.6% to 65.4%, and averaging 77.5%

Finally on best 11 team value, Celtic’s is 119m euros, with teams ranging from Dynamo Kyiv at 62.5m to Quarabag at 14.5m. “Win chance” ranges from 89.1% to 65.6%, average 77.7%.

All positive stuff but as you can see the chances vary wildly depending on who we face, and which metric you put the most faith in. M Tel-Aviv for example have the highest UEFA coef so on this metric alone they look like a tough draw, but they have one of the lowest squad/best 11 values.

I personally prefer a blend of the three. As much as UEFA coefs throw up some strange looking favourites you can’t write them off, they’ve generally been earned in challenging competition. As an example M Tel-Aviv (26m squad value remember) have wins against Besiktas (118m), Olympiacos (123m) and Nice (216m) in the last few years. However squad/best 11 value is generally king.

Lots of time to go, transfers will be made so the above is simply a “snapshot in time” analysis, but don’t expect metrics to change dramatically. I’ll run the numbers again when the play-off draw is made.

    ———

I don’t know the answer to that.

I might be reaching here , and happy to be corrected if I am , but if your question is intended to measure KTs general fitness/ ability to play regularly without injury then it might be better to ask

“ Can anyone tell me how many matches KT has started and finished the whole 90 minutes ,in the last 3 seasons , and how many he has missed entirely or had to curtail through injury?”

There’s no denying he has injury issues but I suspect -and hope – that many of his absences at Arsenal were , as P67 alluded to in a recent post, due to a change in tactics / formation introduced by Arteta and , specifically, I think the purchase of Zinchenko.

  10. The injury list for keiran.

simple facts he was available for selection around 100 matches.

his manager choose not to select him, this incldues scotland and sociedad.

Likes a bargain does oor Greg

  12. What was the criteria for entry into the World Club Cup?…..I see a few teams in it I would imagine Celtic beating easily…

  13. No answer.

Mate’s a season ticket holder putting up with a racist scum season ticket holder, in his match day company.

Suggested he should tell his racist friend to hook up with his daughter’s hunfcukpig boyfriend.

“That’s the boy’s da ur talking about”

  14. Talking about leftbacks even rightbacks.

Had we not had a Manager, Mr Stein, who demanded that our full-backs immediately play long/diagonal balls if the Jinky option was blocked off, then the great Bobby Lennox, and our amazing strikers might not have scored all of the great goals that they did.

  15. Hi, I’m a lost soul looking for some love.

    Thanks in advance.

And no, I’m not a Hun.

  16. If Neil Lennon hadn’t told Charlie Muldini to lift his head to see if Samaras was in space to receive an out ball at Ibrox on New Years day 2011 then the Sammi Legend might have been remembered as yet another WGS era dud.

Too good an opportunity to pass up.

In the old CQN tradition, I’ll ask the question.

    Are you a hun?

Or did you used to be a hun but you’re alright now? :)

  18. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

If reports are true, we’re making official contact (whatever that means) with clubs and representatives of players.

My uninformed tuppence on transfer window aims and trajectory if I may.

All of it comes with big IFs.

Brendan spoke in January of preferably having a younger player in the 3rd striker position who could develop, take some minutes off thec2 guys ahead of him and, eventually, compete.

If whatshisname from Fulham signs …

.. and Daizen and Adam stick around?

I think that we’re done with 2½ players in that position.

Alleged pursuit of whatshisface from whatchamacallim from Sweden is unsurprising.

If we retain our existing 5 midfielders (Reo being the most uncertain perhaps) we’ve got the coverage we need for an exhausting schedule and have the capacity to swap 3 out. Big tick.

Kieran is in. Another LB being sought.

I suspect we’ll seek two good wingers, one might be a season long loan, to replace Jota.

Assuming Kuhn stays we’ll have him, Daizen, James and two new guys. 4½ wingers sorted.

If we keep our best assets in defence, CCV and AJ I don’t expect any new faces at the back but any three of Maik, Gustaf, Stephen, or (maybe on loan) Dane could leave.

If decks are cleared maybe one more CB but, IMHO, unlikely.

I’d expect Odin, Luis, and Tillo to stay away and Yang to go too.

Lots of speculation but a trimmed, yet deeper and sturdier squad perhaps

  19. One of my Favourites, Lou, Lou,(NOT sly Mary Lou) skip to my Lou Macari, in 1994 when he created the Simon Donnelly Legend at the Ibrox Lions den were all Tims were banned and a break away SD run to the hun end of the pitch was halted by Gough on the edge of the hun 18 yard box and John Collins scored a Brazilliant free kick which was looking like a historic winning goal until the huns got a deflected equaliser in the last minute!

That deflected hun goal did Macari out of the Celtic job imho, and John Collins was to become Captain to replace the Maestro who was to stop all of his running about and become a ‘front sweeper’ with Peter( 2 Titles out of 14 legend )Grant replaced by Gary Holt, a player who could actually win the ball.

  20. I loved it when Alfie applauded us in the Jungle before the game even started when we sung his name to show him how truly unique we were as a supporter base, and how welcome he was.

Mr Stein made him come out last for the warm up, walking Alfie up to the edge of the pitch before patting him on the the back to send him over to the Jungle for a wave, magnificent stuff.

  21. B2B

A good summary…but….our present style of play does not suit Adam….unless he’s partnered up…..or we start throwing in crosses from wide areas, even early crosses from the half way mark …then in my opinion we’ll definitely need another striker….if we did go down that route then that would rule out Kuhn as our No1 winger…so we’d need a new right winger to make up the numbers….

A couple of decent players at least are required in my humble opinion…

  22. Nowadays – 2 Irish International 1st team Celtic regulars, Liam Scales and Adam Idah, have played in the team for about 2 years, and not ONCE has either of these 2 fine players heard their names being sung!

    Not Once!

  23. “celtic40me on 12th June 2025 11:17 am

Celtic committed the fewest fouls per game in the SPL last season.”

We may well have `committed` the fewest per game but I believe we were punished more per minute.
