Spending big money in France

327

Christopher Jullien was 26 years old when Celtic paid Toulouse €8m for him four years ago.  We paid PSG even more a year earlier for Odsonne Edouard, then 20.  It is France, not England or Japan, that Celtic feel confident enough to spend their highest transfer fees.

Compared to England, Germany, Italy and Spain, Celtic possibly see better value in France.  €8m would get you little more than a huge gamble in some of these markets.  The possibility of returning to France for a player valued in the same bracket as Christopher and Odsonne, who matches our age and development opportunity profile, makes a lot more sense than picking up players on Kieran Tierney’s wages.

The English FA responded to a mistake in the Manchester United – Wolves game by their Video Assistant Referees last night by the Head of Refereeing apologising to the Wolves manager and suspending both VARs.  They acted in a similar fashion last year.

Mistakes happen, referees and VARs are fallible, it is unnecessary to pretend otherwise.  The SFA would walk VAR technology off a cliff rather than hold their hands up to a mistake made in review.

  1. Just don’t see it from raskan either, he’s not bad but he doesn’t do anything.

  3. Much as I hate to say it,Cantwell is the only one playing well.Against this opposition, that’s faint praise.

  4. Since when does Mc Lean start calling him” RASKAN”.McFadden is calling him Raskin.

Not being biased, but just how bad is this.

  5. TB – Agreed. Cantwell has good movement and makes some excellent forward passes but he is also being dispossessed a lot and his cheating is on another level.

  6. “Miles better second half”. This team again played tonight with 6 1st team men out,and you could see it.Useless, and these Tubes talking this pish.Thats me.

PSV winning 7- 2 on aggregate.

    Servette were poor. Sadly.

PSV will not be so bad 2 years in a row. They booted their keeper who threw in 3 goals versus that mob last year. The good news is they have a game mid-week before Celtic play them.

    Positives exist.

  8. Where would huns be without Tavpens goals?!!….incredible really….and he’s bang average

    Objectivity test.

Cross my heart I’ve not looked.

If that was Celtic the BBC headline would be: “ Celtic survive early scare to scape through”.

And it’s “Rangers see off Servette to reach Champions League play off”.

    There you go.

  11. Looked to me like the Servette coach had decided the sevco attack was not worth shutting up shop for. The space they allowed them at times was shocking. He was generally right though, the zombies wasted some real gifts that were handed to them.

Lammers looks like a footballer until he starts to play football. Danilo is poor. Dessers looks lazy and poor.

Tiktok had the freedom of the park which he won’t enjoy most weeks in Scotland let alone in Europe.

Cifuentes gives me Soro/Kamara vibes. Busy, likes a forward pass but it’s all a bit lacking in substance.

They were up against a limited team tonight. Not one servette player on the park would get anywhere near our squad. I suspect they may not even interest Beale.

Hibs performance last week is a good indication of where Swiss football is in the pecking order. Perhaps our league isn’t as bad as all that.

So, I now ditch my undying love for servette and have found a new affection fir PSV. Go the Eindhoven Bhoys!

RR – from what I saw, that team would hover around the top 6 of the SPFL.

  13. Servette may have gone through if the attacker had squared the ball for a tap in to go 2 ahead. Rangers dominated the game 2nd half and looked better than last season (Cifuentes looks solid) – esp with their subs.

Best player over the 2 legs – Timothe Cognat. Reminds me of iniesta. I’d take Tim at Celtic center mid.

Rangers deserved win against as very poor team who were fortunate against genk – PSV will handle them!

As for Celtic, back to the lawell days of dithering and waiting for last minute bargains. Experienced signings now please!
