Spending big money in France

327

Christopher Jullien was 26 years old when Celtic paid Toulouse €8m for him four years ago.  We paid PSG even more a year earlier for Odsonne Edouard, then 20.  It is France, not England or Japan, that Celtic feel confident enough to spend their highest transfer fees.

Compared to England, Germany, Italy and Spain, Celtic possibly see better value in France.  €8m would get you little more than a huge gamble in some of these markets.  The possibility of returning to France for a player valued in the same bracket as Christopher and Odsonne, who matches our age and development opportunity profile, makes a lot more sense than picking up players on Kieran Tierney’s wages.

The English FA responded to a mistake in the Manchester United – Wolves game by their Video Assistant Referees last night by the Head of Refereeing apologising to the Wolves manager and suspending both VARs.  They acted in a similar fashion last year.

Mistakes happen, referees and VARs are fallible, it is unnecessary to pretend otherwise.  The SFA would walk VAR technology off a cliff rather than hold their hands up to a mistake made in review.

  1. Wonder if Paddy Power is giving odds on the number of ‘Cantwells’ around, and inside, the penalty box over the course of 38 league games. 40 – 50 might be 20/1

    50 – 60 might be 15/1

    60 – 70 might be 10/1

    70 – 80 might be 5/1

    Cantwell best falls not working

    —————

They work in Scotland though and will be one of our biggest worries when we play them. They have set themselves up as a set-piece team with a lot of height (not much else mind) and the Scottish refs will duly oblige.

  3. Stebhoy,

You stay away from those,Oxycontins. They seem to be havin an adverse efect on your football judgement.

    :-))))

  4. As expected really, the huns just edge Servette. I don’t see much to fret about, they do look to have fallen back a good way.

  5. Listen lad,ya dont half talk shaaat

“As for Celtic, back to the lawell days of dithering and waiting for last minute bargains. Experienced signings now please!”

  6. Watched a bit of the huns game . No matter how bad or whatever both teams were , the fact is the huns progress in Europe.

I would not bet against them beating PSV. Deja- vu anybody. ?

However that is a distraction, my focus is on us and our preparations for European football.

It is the biggest show in town.

  7. Good morning all from another dry morning in the Garngad.

    How bad are sevco.

Now lets get our own house in order.

Some more in before window shuts as its a long season.

Hearing CCV out for 5 or 6 weeks and Reo as well.

    D :)

  8. I havent read back yet, but I watched the Huns last night and as I ( and maybe some others feared ?) the Huns would get through the Tie.

I had THAT ORRIBLE feeling yesterday.

BETTING ….I did NOT have the Correct Score of 1 -1, but I DID Bet a 2 – 2 Draw……which was a losing bet obviously.

It could have been 2 – 2 IF both Teams had NOT missed SITTERS ?

    LOL

I thought BOTH Teams were POOR….especially SERVETTE, but Today that will not concern SEVCO.

Hopefully, PSV will KNOCK them OUT ….Big time ?

    SUCCESS…

I DID have PSV to win 3 – 1 v Strum Graz at odds of 14/1 on TWO separate bookie lines.

So it was profitable evening after all…. Money wise.

I also had TAVPEN to score at ANYTIME @ odds of 3/1 in a POSSIBLE DOUBLE with Engurlunds ” RUSSO” in the Wummins match later this morning. Her odds are 0/30 to score at ANYTIME.

SEVCOs ” RASKIN” was probably their best player last night, with Mr CANTWELL doing his utmost to win Penalties and Fouls…..as per usual.

It wasnt too difficult for RASKIN to be their best player, as I saw so many DUD Huns on show.

I Posted last week that DANILO looks like a ” Poor Mans SEBO”…..He certainly supported that opinion with HIS MISSED SITTER last night.

SERVETTE were so poor, that SEVCO had several chances breaking out of defence with the game being ” Streched” in the 2nd half. Overall, Sevco had many chances to score more than One Goal in the 2nd half, but their ” Forwards” just werent good enough.

    MON the PSV !

Big Jimmy and the other betting men will certainly make informed score predictions.

I think 2-1 to the Tillies.

    Go Aussies go.

Cheers mate, but MOST of my Correct Score Predictions/BETS are NOT ” INFORMED”.

Mostly… Guesswork and Sheer LUCK !

    LOL.

Ive placed TWO Correct Score Bets on The AUSSIES v Engurlund…..2 -1 and 3-2 for The ” TILLIES” IF SAM KERR plays from the start and is ” On Her Game”

The Bookie Odds on the above Scorelines were too tempting to miss ?

However, Engurlund have a very strong Squad who may prove to be a SYDNEY BRIDGE too far for The Matildas ?

I hope that I am WRONG in my last sentence ?

    MON The TILLIES.

  11. Der Hun…

They’ve left their defence unchecked in the transfer window and are emotionally tied to Tavpen for non-defensive reasons. They’ll ship goals although have improved in nets with Butland.

Their 3 CM first picks in Raskin, Cantwell & Cifuentes are tidy, unspectacular and all a bit same-y actually. They don’t score goals in any great number. Jack or Lundstrum are just older, slower and poorer as DMs, but it’s all they have.

Their attackers look awful and overall no real identity in the way they play. They flood the middle and press but their width is down to 2 over the hill full backs whipping it in and creating chaos in the box.

Know little of PSV but surely good enough to best this lot. Most of the huns seem to have accepted that fact.

  12. SERVETTE v SEVCO…

At one point in last nights game, sometime in the 1st Half…CANTWELL Fouled a Servette player, who went down.

CANTWELL was NOT too happy at the award of a free Kick against him, and APPEARED to say something to the Servette Guy as he lay on the Turf….I ALSO thought that CANTWELL was about to SPIT on his opponent for a moment….but then decided against it and SPAT on the Turf….close to where the Servette player was lying ?

    I DONT think I imagined it ?

Servette were MINCE throughout the game ( nothing to do with SEVCO being any good ), and WHY did that Servette ” Player” NOT pass from 8 yards out to a Team mate, who faced an OPEN GOAL….and had a TAP IN….it would have been 2 – 0 to Servette if the Servette ” Player” wasnt a GREEDY wee BASSA !

  13. The goal the huns scored last night is one we could easily concede against them. Priority must be, assuming we nab the Swede, a goalie and a left back

  14. OFF SUBJECT…

Im watching Re Runs of the Brilliant TV Show ” FRASIER”.

There is one episode called…” MORNING BECOMES ENTERTAINMENT” which I had largely forgotten about.

In the above episode, KELSEY GRAMMAR ( FRASIER), does a very good impersonation of Sean Connery…however…he ALSO does a BRILLIANT Impersonation of the Actor ” JAMES MASON”….The best impersonation of James Mason that I have heard heard…SUPERB.

There is also an episode of ” FRASIER” which is the BEST ever….His brother ” NILES” is alone in Frasiers apartment, and is getting ready for a night out when he decides to IRON his Trousers….NILES is alone with ” EDDIE the Dog”….and the calamities that ensue when he decides to Iron his Trousers is PURE COMEDY GOLD.

  18. Tom McLaughlin on

I said a week ago that I’d prefer Sevco to get through against Servette and face two tough ties against PSV Eindhoven in the lead-up to Celtic’s visit to Ibrox.

There is not a chance of Sevco getting into the Champions League. PSV will beat them home and away.

Servette were no better than a Ross County or Motherwell. The Dutch team are a class above the Ibrox side.

    No danger.

Think of them being eliminated from the CL in Holland on Wednesday 30th with Celtic visiting on the Sunday. They will be shattered.

  19. Think someone said yesterday that last night’s result was worth around 7 million to them, 5 for reaching next round and 2 for something else I can’t remember. Not to be sniffed at though no doubt some blogger will claim that they can’t afford to pay this month’s wages. Now them being them, there is a good chance they will use that money as quickly as possible to strengthen their chances of winning the title rather than putting it below the mattress for a rainy day. CL participation this year is unlikely, PSV should eliminate them but stranger things have happened.

Meanwhile our cash surplus has a cash surplus which also has a cash surplus. I would be massively disappointed if a chunk of that is not used to get in a better goalkeeper and 1-2 first team players better than what we have. It would be hard to swallow if we go into the CL group stages with Hart and Bain as our only goalkeeper options, Likewise with Greg and Bernabei at LB. We are also short of a centre forward despite some saying Abada and Maeda can play there. If you would be happy to play in the CL and at Ibrox with either of them up front, fair play to you. I wouldn’t.

Can anyone think of a justifiable reason not to significantly improve bearing in mind the prizes at stake? That for between 5- 10 million, there are not players in Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, Central and South America that are not quite ready for playing in the big 4 leagues but want a chance to get in the shop window? But that need us to spend a bit more than we are accustomed to? I assume Lawell Jnr has such a list but the best options are outside of the Moneyball model they wish to follow.

I have said a couple of times, we should get the best goalkeeper we can afford and it should not be constrained by the business model of buying cheap to sell big or by an established goalkeeper’s wages. Hart’s mistakes will cost us goals and points regardless of how wonderful a presence he has in the dressing room and on the training ground. He is well past his best, anyone arguing otherwise has his head in the sand.

Only my opinions and I am, in all honesty, fully expecting to see Joe in goals come September’s opening CL games with GT at LB.

  20. The Dutch FA have moved swiftly to give PSV Eindhoven a helping hand in their bid to reach the Champions League group stage by handing them extra time to prepare for the decisive second leg of their play-off clash with Rangers.

Just as they did last season, the Eredivise side’s which was sandwiched between both legs of the Rangers tie has been postponed – to give manager Peter Bosz the best possible preparation to ensure they qualify for the lucrative group stage of UEFA’s premier competition.

PSV were due to host Go Ahead Eagles in the Philips Stadium on Saturday, August 26 but the game has instead been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 27 after they took the KNVB up on their offer. Rangers face the lengthy trip north to take on Ross County on August 26 for a lunchtime kick off. It means Bosz and his side will have a full eight days to prepare for the second leg of their clash with Rangers. They travel to Vitesse Arnhem this Saturday before a trip to Ibrox Stadium next Tuesday and then won’t be in action again until the visit of Rangers the following Wednesday.

    ………..

The Scottish Media are NOT happy with PSV getting some help from their Fitba Association….

    LOL
