SPFL bet on China

787

Interesting development reported this morning by the BBC that the SPFL have sold rights to a Chinese broadcaster for around £500k per year.  With rights for major European leagues commanding premium fees, it seems intuitive that there’s space for lower-cost content, but Scottish football must be starting from a position of practically zero market knowledge in China.  Unless Zheng Zhi is a whole lot more popular than I realised.

The other aspect about China to bear in mind is the size and habits of its gambling market.  If you are a gambler, you don’t watch football for the thrill of following your favourite team, you watch for the opportunity to beat the bookie, and in this respect, Scottish football is as valuable as any league.

Sport’s relationship with gambling has been a source of concern, especially in the Scottish lower leagues, but when you look up your fixture list and see the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership, there’s no point getting precious about the influence Chinese gamblers.

I see the Bumblebee’s back!  This NB know how to push our buttons with the retro look.

I know around 100 of you have/can/will run a 10k or half marathon, and a few dozen have told me you’re signing up to do the Great Scottish Run for your Foundation.  You know what it’s about, Health, Education, Learning, Poverty – or in short, it’s about what Celtic means to you and me.

Time to get moving on it.  See the Foundation page here for details.  It’s in October, so there’s a good chance the rain will stop by then.  Let me know when you’ve signed up, celticquicknews@gmail.com

You don’t need to break records, you don’t even need to run the whole course, just get the trainers on and get out there, you’ll be glad you did.

    EDIT

What is the tie up with Wigan? All very bizarre.

I have seen a link suggested between Dave Whelan, Wigan chairman and former owner of JJB Sports, who were bought over by Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct.

Not too tenuous, considering the murky, tangled web of deceit and chicanery that is Sevco.

    *** An Tearmann,

Don’t be making promises of tae on my behalf.

All I will stand for is anyone buying me a pint!

    That’s what I call hospitality.

Off to LK tomorrow to renew my Driving Licence. I can only get a three year one now.

I remember, back in the ’70s, when the “lifetime” licence was introduced, mine was dated to expire in March 2014.

Oh how I laughed at that distant, far off date.

It came and passed, but I reckon I got the best of the deal as I have passed my “lifetime” deadline!!

Livibhoy, former Wigan chairman, Dave Whelan, was close to Dodgy Dave the first.

When Rangers (IL) played Man U in the champions league the season after the Manchester riot, the Manchester Polis told the sticky bun fans, you ain’t getting into Manchester apart from for the match.

Dave Whelan told Murray, the sticky fans could park their buses at Wigan’s ground plus use their bars and restaurants before the game. They then got a polis escort from the Wigan stadium to Old Trafford around 6pm.

Dave Whelan’s grand son now runs the show at Wigan but I’m certain Dave Whelan will still have a say in things.

Alternatively, Heid might be getting rid of a few players he doesn’t rate and there is no better place for them to go than Sevco.

Dr Budge knocked back from SPFL board.

SPFL board was re-elected unchanged from last year:

Eric Riley (Celtic), Duncan Fraser (Aberdeen), Stephen Thompson (Dundee United)(Representing Premier League),

Eric Drysdale (Raith Rovers), Mike Mulraney (Alloa Athletic) (Representing Championship)

Ken Ferguson (Brechin City) (representing Divs 1 and 2).

Cheers for the responses I knew about that myself but I am wondering what the tie up is here. Warburton maybe friends with the grandson at Wigan?

My impression was that Whelan did not like Ashley and I doubt he would allow his grandson to trade with out his say so.

Could Whelan provide an ally to TGASL?

    All very strange for me.

Heid as a gaffer would give me nightmares by the way.

Celtic Tigers has a nice ring to it altho, Sevco Kittens sounds equally amusing.
