SPFL bet on China

787

Interesting development reported this morning by the BBC that the SPFL have sold rights to a Chinese broadcaster for around £500k per year.  With rights for major European leagues commanding premium fees, it seems intuitive that there’s space for lower-cost content, but Scottish football must be starting from a position of practically zero market knowledge in China.  Unless Zheng Zhi is a whole lot more popular than I realised.

The other aspect about China to bear in mind is the size and habits of its gambling market.  If you are a gambler, you don’t watch football for the thrill of following your favourite team, you watch for the opportunity to beat the bookie, and in this respect, Scottish football is as valuable as any league.

Sport’s relationship with gambling has been a source of concern, especially in the Scottish lower leagues, but when you look up your fixture list and see the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership, there’s no point getting precious about the influence Chinese gamblers.

I see the Bumblebee’s back!  This NB know how to push our buttons with the retro look.

I know around 100 of you have/can/will run a 10k or half marathon, and a few dozen have told me you’re signing up to do the Great Scottish Run for your Foundation.  You know what it’s about, Health, Education, Learning, Poverty – or in short, it’s about what Celtic means to you and me.

Time to get moving on it.  See the Foundation page here for details.  It’s in October, so there’s a good chance the rain will stop by then.  Let me know when you’ve signed up, celticquicknews@gmail.com

You don’t need to break records, you don’t even need to run the whole course, just get the trainers on and get out there, you’ll be glad you did.

A pleasure. Hope all is well with you too.

It’s unfortunate that he’s picked up a knee injury as he was going with the squad to Spain and, especially with Joe Hansen not playing, I’m sure he would have had some game time.

Both brothers just moan about how bad they play, like yourself it’s also the social aspect for them, bunking off to Santa Ponsa, La Manga or Tenerfie for golfing weekends, I have yet to see them pack their clubs, thing is both their wives don’t question them so maybe I will start back “playing golf” myself

    LoL

My brother in law and his pals went on a golfing weekend to Spain every year.

The clubs never left Glasgow airport ;)

Is answering someone’s post trolling? – If that’s the case we are all trolls and the forum is a troll hotspot.

I think what you mean is, that in your eyes, if I don’t agree and ‘pee hee’ with you, and the likes- and you can’t counter my argument – then I must be a troll.

If that’s the case, then I happy to be one.

£500k is virtually money for nothing.

If we got £500k from a number of countries for our fitba it would give us a much better TV deal than we currently have.

We should target India next and try and get a similar deal.

The spin offs will be sponsors for our ground hoardings. Maybe shirt sponsors and possibly some other spin offs.

It is foolish to knock it back. The more countries we get exposure in the better. Hopefully the next time the live coverage is due for renewal in this country it is more valuable due to the global footprint.

For all we get from TV deals it’s almost not worth it.

  12. Six game ban for Nadir. Well that’s a change, usually new Celtic strikers would ship an injury and miss games at the start of the season.

I dumped Sky Sports after lurking on this blog. I agree with Dessybhoy. I hope Sky go bust. When I cancelled the call centre girl seemed interested (in a scripted kinda way), in my reasons. I thought they were maybe going to seriously think about their strategy for Scottish Fitba. Obviously not from Dessybhoy’s comments. But surely punters leaving ( I had Sky Sports for 14 years) must have some impact. Leave now! I don’t know what I am going to do for the Sky Celtic games, but I feel clean!

From SFA website – longer than originally thought:

    Outcome: Breach established

Sanction: Eight match suspension to be applied as follows – Six match suspension applied with immediate effect, two matches suspended until the end of season 2015/16 to be applied in the event of any further breach of Rule 202.*

*Suspension applies to all domestic matches

    Ibe is a terrific prospect.

I was talking about him last week .

I thought Liverpool would be happy for Sterling to go as Ibe is a better prospect.

    Big powerful wide player.

Very direct ,has pace ,a wee trick ,and power.

Looks like the Ciftci ban has been increased to eight with two suspended, meaning a

    six match ban.

They can’t even communicate, SFA indeed.

  26. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Ciftci’s suspension could be filed under Ill Wind.

I reckon it will take at least that time to remove some, or most of, his extra weight.

He has the skill, apart from heading ability, but needs to sharpen up for Celtic.

This gives him a chance to shape out out of the spotlight.
