SPFL bet on China

787

Interesting development reported this morning by the BBC that the SPFL have sold rights to a Chinese broadcaster for around £500k per year.  With rights for major European leagues commanding premium fees, it seems intuitive that there’s space for lower-cost content, but Scottish football must be starting from a position of practically zero market knowledge in China.  Unless Zheng Zhi is a whole lot more popular than I realised.

The other aspect about China to bear in mind is the size and habits of its gambling market.  If you are a gambler, you don’t watch football for the thrill of following your favourite team, you watch for the opportunity to beat the bookie, and in this respect, Scottish football is as valuable as any league.

Sport’s relationship with gambling has been a source of concern, especially in the Scottish lower leagues, but when you look up your fixture list and see the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership, there’s no point getting precious about the influence Chinese gamblers.

I see the Bumblebee’s back!  This NB know how to push our buttons with the retro look.

I know around 100 of you have/can/will run a 10k or half marathon, and a few dozen have told me you’re signing up to do the Great Scottish Run for your Foundation.  You know what it’s about, Health, Education, Learning, Poverty – or in short, it’s about what Celtic means to you and me.

Time to get moving on it.  See the Foundation page here for details.  It’s in October, so there’s a good chance the rain will stop by then.  Let me know when you’ve signed up, celticquicknews@gmail.com

You don’t need to break records, you don’t even need to run the whole course, just get the trainers on and get out there, you’ll be glad you did.

As I just stated ,I hope this is true .

That boy will run riot up here.

I cannot believe that Liverpool would allow him to do that.

We won’t be moving games for Chinese TV. They pick up the coverage already being done BT/Sky will still dictate kick offs.

For those thinking £500k/season is a bit low for China, did those geniuses at the SPFL not give away rights for mainland European broadcast for free last time?

I think Liverpool are playing today, and their news tweets are very active.

    Hope it’s true also.

But surely punters leaving ( I had Sky Sports for 14 years) must have some impact. Leave now! I don’t know what I am going to do for the Sky Celtic games, but I feel clean!

There are many ways to access the games without giving money to shower, allegedly;)

Anything that hastens their demise and removes the artificial feel from the European game can only be a good thing.

English football fans dont want to know about us, our history or anything… or how it makes us bigger than most of their clubs. However, when they start boasting that Burnley are ‘bigger’ than Bayern Munich or Ajax you know the current level of spending cannot be sustained.

New Version of the Three Bears Story

A far more accurate account of the events of that fateful morning….

Baby bear goes downstairs, sits in his small chair at the table.

He looks into his small bowl. It is empty. ‘Who’s been eating my porridge?’ he squeaks.

Daddy Bear arrives at the big table and sits in his big chair… He looks into his big bowl and it is also empty. ‘Who’s been eating my porridge?!?’ he roars.

Mummy Bear puts her head through the serving hatch from the kitchen and yells, ‘For God’s sake, how many times do I have to go through this with you idiots? It was Mummy Bear who got up first. It was Mummy Bear who woke everyone in the house. It was Mummy Bear who made the coffee. It was Mummy Bear who unloaded the dishwasher from last night and put everything away. It was Mummy Bear who swept the floor in the kitchen. It was Mummy Bear who went out in the cold early morning air to fetch The newspaper and croissants. It was Mummy Bear who set the damn table.

‘It was Mummy Bear who walked the bloody dog, cleaned the cat’s litter tray, gave them their food, and refilled their water.

‘And now that you’ve decided to drag your sorry bear-arses downstairs and grace Mummy Bear with your grumpy presence, listen carefully, because I’m only going to say this once….

    ‘I HAVEN’T MADE THE F***** Porridge YET

Thought just a 4 match ban for Cifcti seemed unexpectedly lenient.

Ciftci hearing at SFA this morning. If found guilty, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him miss all our 6 league matches in August.

He would then be back after the International break for the games against Aberdeen, Dundee and Hearts. He would also be available for our Champions League qualifiers.

  11. Of the 2 rumoured Liverpool loan signings:

    Ibe – RW aged 19

Origi striker aged 20 with 3 international goals in 14 appearances.

I know who we need most and he’s the more likely loanee given Liverpool’s recent big money signing.

  12. China TV deal is not new money for our league. It’s part of a £20m deal over 10 years, been in place since last year. It will not alter any kick off Times – only Sky and BY can do that.

JImmynotpaul, I’m in my last week of freedom before I enter the dreaded you see.

The general feeling is things won’t improve for any of us.

  16. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

Liverpool has an excess of forwards with the signing of Benteke (having medical) and Ings, in addition to Lambert Ballotelli and Sturridge already on the books.

With Henderson, Coutinho, Can, Lallana and now Milner in midfield, not many options for the younger guys.

If they want to loan out Ibe and/or Origi, I think that would add options to our squad as a few have departed and suspensions and injuries could leave us a bit thin especially with a hopefully tough European schedule.

  17. Jimmynotpaul on

    Dallas.

Chalkie is the same, he’s on holiday just now and then moves on to U.C.

  18. Can’t see Liverpool loaning out Jordan Ibe, if anything he will be a first team regular this season. He played a lot of games for them last season.

If Benteke signs then they will have him, Sturridge (due back in October), Ings, Balotelli and Lambert, so Origi is probably going to go out on loan again this season.

Well Cifti will not play any league football in the month of August so he has time to get himself in shape. This may give Scepovic a reprieve as the hoops will be a little short up front if anything happens to the Griff. H.H.

Cheers. Just think the whole TV thing needs to be looked at vis-a-vis what comes in and what is potentially lost.

Would prefer maybe 8-10 live games per season preferably on BBC/ITV.
