SPFL Phoney War is over, the real campaigns start now

187

Yesterday’s SPFL EGM resolution was rejected, as expected.  Those still hurting about relegation, or missing out on promotion, voted in favour.  Some historical allegiances stood firm.  My maternal grandfather took me to my first Celtic game.  He died when I was four, so memories are few, but for some reason I remember him going on about Falkirk and Airdrie.  49 years ago but some allegiances survive through generations and liquidations.

Aberdeen’s new chairman Dave Cormack tried a power play.  In December, his predecessor Stewart Milne, publicly expressed concerns that Celtic’s chief executive, Peter Lawwell, “has too much power in Scottish football”, which translates into ‘more clubs listen to Peter Lawwell than me and I would like to change that.”

The whole world would like to be taken more seriously than Peter Lawwell, but overtly campaigning for this is counter-productive.  Each club in the SPFL has a single vote among 41 others.  Celtic are not represented on the board.  Whatever authority Peter Lawwell has, is earned through respect for his actions – and even then, decisions do not always go his way, no matter what paranoid loons tell you.  Milne never attained the levels he aspired to and Cormack has made an uninspiring start.  If other clubs listen when Peter Lawwell speaks, maybe Stewart Milne should have wondered why?

The vote went against Newco, Hearts, Falkirk, Airdrie, a few like-minded types and those who for various reasons missed out.  Regime change was and remains the objective of some.  Churchill would call this the Phoney War, to determine who has their hands on the levers of power ahead of the really important campaigns ahead.

Forget about “trust issues”, reconstruction and legal action; the spectre of insolvency looms across Scotland.  Every club needs to sell their usual quantity of season tickets, cut costs and find reserves from somewhere – including Celtic.  Those who do, have a chance of getting through this, but the numbers just don’t add up for most.

Many in the industry will lose their jobs this summer, including hundreds of footballers.  What then will we hear from Cormack, Budge, Park, Lawwell?  Those with influence will determine what football looks like in the future and there will be many battles ahead.  Everything is at stake.

In response to The Rangers’ statement that the status quo cannot hold’, the S.P.F.L . board have leaked their response as follows….

Ref: Your statement re Status Quo

    To: The Zombies

    ELO ELO,

The Foundations of your position are a bit of a Uriah Heep and you really should be eating some Humble Pie while your Chairman of The Board sends out The Searchers in an attempt to restore some Credence, find some Clearwater and plant the seeds of Revival in a future Nirvana.

As you become The Seekers of salvation you may think of appealing to your Queen but as she’s really a Tim, you will undoubtedly just sink further in Mud.

There were too many Showstoppers in your proposal . Additionally The Undertones of and Kinks in your claims demonstrated that your intentions were no more than a Sham 69, causing it to go down like a Led Zeppelin

The Doors to our offices are always open and, though when we say The Rangers many will reply ”The Who?”, we remind you that The Rolling Stones gather no moss.

So Freda Payne-ful as The Clash of egos has been, let’s not be Pretenders. We know that you believe that a Genesis is possible, but as you have been shown up to be The Stooges it really is unlikely!

Perhaps you may see this as the end of a Love Affair, prefer your own Bad Company, and revert to your undoubtedly comfortable existence as a Supertramp while finding an Oasis of calm in sharing a spliff at the lodge with the eponymous Doobie Brothers.

Yes you really are a Mötley Crüe, never reticent about ignoring The Commitmentsto society.

So all we can say is Amen corner to that and remind you that no one has yet found The Cure to whatever Madness has reduced U2 a state of Lady GaGa.

After the <Poison you self-administered….or was it self-liquidated?…., you can now wallow in your twilight existence as the Grateful Dead….(If you can’t provide sufficient wallowers, we can help!)

So as you Rage Against The Machine you may wish to think of that great cross between Lee Wallace and Father Tom White of St Alphonsus’, Judas Priest, and pray for forgiveness.

Now as you find yourself in Dire Straits may we wish all The Animals a goodNight Rangers, and hopefully tomorrow won’t be too full of Moody Blues but be a fine Green Day.

as you have only turned java off in Safari, all your apps should be OK. Most sites would be OK too I think. If a site that normally works for you has issues, you just turn it back on for those. I remember BMCUWP saying he did that for a betting site i think.

The one change needed in Scottish Football is the total elimination of all things sevco from the landscape, all the other teams move up one place, bring in Barry Ferguson team (Kelty Hearts?) to replace the lost banter, only when that has come to pass will the game up here eventually settle down.

Hell mend the SPL, and Neil Doncaster.

In 2012 the very same people now being abused and conspired against, presented a license to a new group of business men that had mysteriously acquired a stadium and training ground, after Lord Hodge liquidated the previous club.

Eight years of a semi living hell manifests itself in a country that hasn’t been able to accept contrition and a support who think that they were relegated.

Someone should have told them that their brand new Grievance FC, is the birthchild of Scotland ( Alex Salmond ) the SFA, and SPL.

They cannot compete on a level playing field the old club were the proof.

Neil Doncaster and much of Scottish society at large, tore up the rule book to accommodate the new angry monster, you reap what you sow.

    HWG TIAR

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I think Celtic have reached a piss or get off the pot point here Paul and Br in terms of setting out a way forward for Scottish football that should be part of the input as the issue is discussed.

They know that they had to agree to the 5 Way Agreement for commercial reasons and proof exists they accepted it. Proof Peter Lawwell denied seeing to shareholders at the last AGM.

I think many of the support understand the commercial pressures, I think most folk whose experience is in business recognise them.

However if the moral price of accepting an arrangement that at the time was seen as good for the game means denying to Celtic shareholders at an AGM in public that Celtic, who for an unknown number of supporters are held to a moral standard that will not accept lies, then the game of football in Scotland is screwed (and if it were not for CQN protocols I’d use a stronger word).

The Res12 at last AGM set out why it should be taken from SFA and given to UEFA yet Celtic rejected it, significantly not on the basis the case was incompetent and Rangers were in the clear but on grounds neither UEFA nor Scottish clubs were interested! What Celtic have never said, not once in 8 years is that Rangers were guilty of wrong doing. Not a hint even in private.

Which is why I comment here and now.

Paul himself calls the latest escapade as a power play and it certainly looks like it, but it is one that a number of parties hostile to Celtic with strong connections to Ibrox have clearly been involved in.

The BBC whose bias has been clear currently but who (along with others) were provided with sufficient material as outlined on SFM to show that the bias/hostility has been historical, and currently, full of hypocrisy.

So are Celtic going to remain silent for the good of the game on the bind that the continuing attempts from Ibrox to undermine Celtic BY FOUL MEANS put Peter Lawwell and The Board in?

In seeking to get supporters to renew STs is it not time Celtic came clean? Indeed from a commercial as well as moral point is it not good business? If being shown to put up a fight gets the blue meanies on board, why wouldn’t it work for Celtic?

Possible commercial impact aside are Celtic going to act when the time is right AND MAKE A PUBLIC COMMITMENT TO DO SO before any stabilisation talks to bring about the necessary changes in Scottish football governance, that Peter Lawwell assured me was their objective in the spring of 2013, so that the game is governed fairly and seen to be so, and so take power playing out of the equation and restore the trust lost because of the actions of RFC since 2011?

Or will Celtic double down on deceit to supporters/shareholders to stay in governance power through placed men until they lose it at some point in the future?

Perhaps I’m wrong, perhaps in a world that was heading to hell on a handcart full of lies, Celtic have to go with that flow, but this damned virus has given a reason to rethink values and Celtic, being a club who are supposed to reflect the strong Christian and moral values of the support that make us different, might want to show the way to reconciliation via telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about how they went about their defense of Celtic since 2012 and what that has required of them as a club and as individuals?

The road to reconciliation has to start somewhere and Celtic taking that truth path initially with their support would show the way for the rest.

Better that than Scottish Football heads ever downward on an elevator of lies to hell.

Excellent post – confession is good for the soul.

Celtic will probably hide behind some NDA as far as the 5-way agreement is concerned.

  20. Gene,

I don’t necessarily disagree with you and as always admire Auldhied’s tenacity. However:-

We are currently sailing through perilous uncharted waters and our support needs to stay united with the club.

  21. Well said Auldheid…..

Now is the time for Celtic to find their moral compass – it’s in our genes to do so – put everything out there and if we need to accept a penance then so be it !

Once the decks are clear we move forward without the baggage – both morally and emotionally.

Also….such action would leave the Corrupt SFA with nowhere to hide and might force change….

When I was teaching, one of my pupils asked me if I had ever heard of a group ( as we always called them) named King Crimson. Apparently her Dad was a member but she hadn`t realised, until I told her, that they were quite a big name in their day.

“Are [Sevco] now in all out war against Celtic?”

    FFin’ right they are:

“There was always an understanding that the old firm had a symbiotic relationship whilst being bitter rivals and they would co-operate for their mutual benefit. Since 2012, that has gone out of the window and now [Lawwell is playing to his fanatical anti rangers fan base. If Lawwell really did call the Rangers dossier / complaint embarassing, then its time to hit them where it hurts.”

    ——

    “Now that battle has been properly joined;

Cry ‘Havoc’ and let slip the dogs of war.”

    ——

“While we were winning 9iar they were planning and scheming and with Murray and Bain at the helm they plotted our downfall.

It took years to take over Scottish football and the press but one by one they took up there positions While our custodians slept.

Total appeasement allowed them to do it.

To be honest taigs are good at this type of thing, while we live our life and work and play they get themselves into positions of power, all local government is full of taigs, councils, unions, committees, they are like a cancer in society.”

    ——

“Our lowest point was Bain sitting a the table with the [Lawwell] , he looked like his pet poodle.”

    ——

“Protestant Scotland must rise up, if we dont sometime soon, then we will be trampled over, this is not just a football thing.”

    ——

“I return my call for a dark arts department. It’s clear as day one exists over at their midden with co-ordinated media attacks. Social media attack dogs etc etc. We need to follow suit and get in the gutter to win this fight.”

    ——

“The club need to continue the fightback. I like the idea of a ‘dark-arts department.’ A full out smear campaign against them. We should start by officially banning them from Ibrox, and that includes their board. No respect; nothing.

we should start and fund a gorilla war against them.”

    ——

“The c[haps] are in employment. In many top influential positions in every sphere of Scottish society. They have an influence way beyond their population. Their Pope told them years ago in Bellahouston Park what they had to do. They acted on his instructions. We must not kid ourselves that things will change without imagination and a concerted effort.”

    ——

“It really turned with lawell and his utter dominance of Martin Bain who he bitched slapped all over the shot.”

    ——

“Lieswell has been working on his plans for years

    – Get control of the SPL and SFA

    – Get mhedia and broadcast TV & Radio working a Tarrier agenda

    – Get dirty PR companies engaged Big Partnership, Hollicom

    – Use Catholic Church to influence a range of areas. (Courts, Scot Govt, UEFA)

    – Use Dr Death to encourage HMRC to punish and cripple Rangers

    – Use Manus Fullerton at HBOS to force Murray to sell to shysters

There will be loads of other examples but it’s a common theme”

    ——

“When they sensed weakness over at Ibrox, they changed from being bitter rivals who worked below the water line to do damage, to full-on blitzkrieg against our club and support.

They enacted total war upon us, and even as they did this, few inside Ibrox seemed aware of the bombs falling around them.”

    ——

“Against this seething political background, Rangers Football Club have found themselves wrong-footed.

The very epitome of Protestant Native Scottish Unionist cultural ideology, indeed …who else should they come for first?

The destruction of Rangers and the diminishment of its traditional support base’s heritage and cultural convictions, is a prize greedily sought by both the Nationalists and the Roman Catholic Church.”

  24. I think some have been a bit harsh on Gavin Rae. Apart from the one sentence where he talks of Sevco being `fantastic` and ` amazing` his comments, IMO, are reasonable. Any criticism should be levelled at the `Journalists` who dig up anyone willing to be positive about Sevco or negative about Celtic.

Here is what Gavin Rae actually said:

” Celtic are so far in front at the moment and they’ve been the form team since January.

They’ve looked like they were going to win the title. But that wasn’t mathematically definitive, they could still be caught.

“I can see from both sides, Rangers will be unhappy at not being given the chance to catch them.

“I think the majority of players would love to see the season played out.

“Even if you’re Rangers, a few points behind, there are still a couple of Old Firm games and a chance.

“As hard as it sounds and far away as they were, there is still a chance.

“Though, from a Celtic point of view, it would be fair because they’re so far in front.

“It’s through no fault of Celtic’s own that they’ve not been able to finish the season.”

Rae added: “Obviously, there are some fantastic players at Rangers and the squad is amazing and Steven Gerrard is a winner.

“But Celtic have been there and done it. Rangers maybe don’t have enough players who have been in that position, seasoned pros who have won loads of trophies.

“Celtic are more used to it, when times get tough just cracking on.”

  25. Monaghan 1900

Thanks for that. Some of it makes me worried about the mental health od the authors but this bit fair made me laugh:
