SPFL should wait until June before calling league

229

Uefa yesterday signalled a route for top-flight leagues to be ‘called’, ensuring an access route to the Champions and Europa Leagues for qualifying teams.  Their official line – everyone’s official line, including Celtic’s – remains that leagues should be completed where possible, but that outcome remains highly unlikely.

When parties conflict during negotiations or a dispute, one will often have a deadline working against them.  Having taken the null and void outcome off the table, the SPFL have given themselves time, unlike their principle protagonists, who have deadlines looming.

If I was Neil Doncaster, I would wait until the final possible moment before the Premiership is called.  If the SPFL board called the league on Friday, it would be too late to provide prize money to cover April wages, but it is likely several of the league’s cash-impaired clubs will need this money to be released by the middle of next month.

I would be happy to wait until early June, when every theoretical possibility is exhausted.  Do the right thing and be seen to do the right thing.  Make Celtic wait, give football every possible chance, there is no hurry.  If the SPFL waits, their preparedness in providing for the lower leagues and patience over the Premiership will be unimpeachable.

Maybe Budge and Park could apply to the League for a loan?  Just an ideal, to help them through the period without prize money.

  1. Hot Smoked: I think a deposit is sufficient until we have a clearer view of what lies ahead.

We are only in the first phase of Covid 19. If people go mad once restrictions are eased we will be quickly into a second lock down.

  2. Al,

From what TBB was saying recently, lockdowns 2-6 are likely. Just a little bit shorter each time.

  3. Topped up the wife’s car today at ASDA in Elgin at £1.027 per litre. I reckon this time next week it will be sub £1.

Ironic that fuel price is lowest for about a decade and we can’t go anywhere.

It will interesting to see what effect this global shutdown has on our carbon footprint. If it means more weather like this then I’m all for it. 😉☀️⛱

  4. I saw bob in glasgow. Really disappointed that he didn’t say “it’s great to be in glasgow”

  5. HOT SMOKED,

Am I not right in thinking that Celtic technically owe us money, if the rest of the games are not played? Could those monies not be used as a deposit? Because of my personal condition, I don’t know if I will be allowed to attend matches, if and when they start again.

Van Morrison did the same at the secc many years ago. Not a word to the audience. Some of these ‘stars’ don’t have the personality to converse with an audience. Dylan I’m sure does, he just doesn’t give a fig…who cares really, if you go to listen to the music?

Best I ever saw live? Fela Kuti…

  12. Thought I would chip in about Bob.

Saw him about eight times, he is hit and miss.

When he is on it he is really on it.

Best ever in the eighties at Birmingham with the late great Tom Petty.

Couldn’t believe he was playing Blackpool a couple of years ago.

  13. Dylan and Van Morrison would make two great bookends I a Wee Free library

I don’t know why they do it…in their 70s and still performing world tours…and I find just nipping down to Tesco’s a pain in the @@se…

  15. All quiet on the blog and on the title front.

And in here too. Wife is doing my veggie casserole for tonight’s dinner

Cereal for soup tomorrow is steeping.

We got our veggies delivered Monday and they spent the requisite time in the decontamination zone.

    No statement from Govan.

    Where’s their evidence?

    Where’s their interims?

Am I right in saying they need them to get a license to participate in Europe?

I’ve seen a few enquiry game about SOT. Has there been news on him.

I hope and pray he and all of your are safe and healthy.

  16. I struggle to understand why those who cannot appreciate the absolute brilliance, of Bob Dylan and Van Morrison feel the need to express it on a Celtic forum.

I have attended numerous Dylan and Van Morrison gigs, every one brilliant.

Van at the Apollo, when he hid behind the piano, claiming vertigo, was amazing , as the musicianship , strings especially on display was exceptional.

Dylan is simply our greatest modern wordsmith.

    Our modern day Shakespeare.

How he decides to display his words and music Is always innovative.

On record or live in concert.

    Appreciate his genius.

  17. Local gas station selling regular for $1.79 a gallon.

Sun shining and the rush hour roads will be empty.

I wish I could visit my favorite diner for my vegetarian skillet.

  18. Eurochamps – there has been discussion about music on this blog since day one.

Each to his own as far as musical idles are concerned, both Dylan and Morrison(especially Dylan) have produced great work.

    HH

  19. NOTTACLUE1 – I only saw Dylan twice, so some way short of your experiences but we share the same impression.

First time at the NEC on the ‘Saved’ tour. Gave the impression he didn’t give a toss. I was really disappointed, my girlfriend of the time was a big Dylan fan, big letdown.

Second time, Wembley stadium, hot day, the bill was Nick Lowe and the Cowboys, UB40, Santana and Dylan. We ‘smuggled’ two one litre bottles of Pernod and OJ masquerading as OJ. Atmosphere was unbelievable. Everyone was great and then it time. Would we be graced by greatness or dissed by Bobness. The high whistle shrill of Highway 61 and Bob shuffling across the stage like a lateral Chuck Berry kicked off the show. Dylan was brilliant that night. All sins were forgiven. Encores were all over the place with Chrissy Hynde, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and Carlos Santana all mucking in. Best moment for me, final encore, solo Dylan, ‘It Ain’t Me Babe’, illuminated by a single spot, half way through the song the 80 000 choir take it over and Dylan just stands there, finally turns and walks slowly off stage. Difficult to believe it was the same guy.
