SPFL should wait until June before calling league

229

Uefa yesterday signalled a route for top-flight leagues to be ‘called’, ensuring an access route to the Champions and Europa Leagues for qualifying teams.  Their official line – everyone’s official line, including Celtic’s – remains that leagues should be completed where possible, but that outcome remains highly unlikely.

When parties conflict during negotiations or a dispute, one will often have a deadline working against them.  Having taken the null and void outcome off the table, the SPFL have given themselves time, unlike their principle protagonists, who have deadlines looming.

If I was Neil Doncaster, I would wait until the final possible moment before the Premiership is called.  If the SPFL board called the league on Friday, it would be too late to provide prize money to cover April wages, but it is likely several of the league’s cash-impaired clubs will need this money to be released by the middle of next month.

I would be happy to wait until early June, when every theoretical possibility is exhausted.  Do the right thing and be seen to do the right thing.  Make Celtic wait, give football every possible chance, there is no hurry.  If the SPFL waits, their preparedness in providing for the lower leagues and patience over the Premiership will be unimpeachable.

Maybe Budge and Park could apply to the League for a loan?  Just an ideal, to help them through the period without prize money.

Some say love, it is a river

    That drowns the tender reed

Some say love, it is a razor

That leaves your soul to bleed

Some say love, it is a hunger

    An endless aching need

I say love, it is a flower

    And you, its only seed

It’s the heart afraid of breaking

    That never learns to dance

It’s the dream afraid of waking

    That never takes the chance

It’s the one who won’t be taking

    Who cannot seem to give

And the soul, afraid of dyin’

    That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely

And the road has been too long

And you think that love is only

For the lucky and the strong

    Just remember in the winter

    Far beneath the bitter snows

Lies the seed that with the sun’s love

In the spring becomes the rose

  8. I tend to avoid the music discussion here unless of course it’s about Ballads but one line of a Dylan song that really grabbed my attention away back in a previous life was from Positively 4th Street, it went

When you know as well as me you’d rather see me paralyzed

Why don’t you just come out once and scream it.

That line has stuck in my head for well over 50 years.

I love the song too, and sing it with the amended lyrics which I cannot get out of my head.

  11. Misheard lyrics…

Years ago. Guy in my class at Cambuslang college walking about singing a tune all day. The chorus he sang went ‘ how was a, how was a ‘.

Unfamiliar with the song, ‘Whit’s that song your singing?’ Says me

‘It’s a new one out in the charts’

I shrugged ‘never heard it mate’

Next day three of us are travelling in the car on the way in to college, OMC come on the radio, bold yin says ‘that’s that song there, it’s a belter!’

When we listened that catchy wee tune and realized it was ‘how bizarre’ and not ‘how was a’ that was sung throughout the song, we had a right good laugh and the big chap got pelters for it the rest of the week..:)

O’Doherty and Waters are complete nut jobs..Those people protesting inside and outside The Courts in Dublin were a disgrace..I have seen them up close in a court room.Their antics should not be tolerated. They aren’t some sort of freedom fighting activists, they are in the main, people with serious mental health issues and that’s me being kind and diplomatic…

  25. My two cents on Lewis Ferguson…

    1. If a player is good enough, he has to be under consideration. If he were the nephew of Paul McStay there would be a clamor amongst our support to get him signed up.

    2. If the financial crisis surrounding Coronavirus means Scottish clubs are cash strapped this may be our best opportunity to negotiate with other teams.

    3. The list of players below maybe don’t strike you as massive upgrades on our existing squad but they should be people we are looking at. Ultimately, there will be a squad churn at some point. Brown will retire and others will look to take a shot at the top 5 European leagues. If Tierney was willing to leave we have to accept that every individual will take that chance.

Lewis Smith (Hamilton), Liam Donnelly (Motherwell), David Turnbull (Motherwell), Lewis Ferguson (Aberdeen), Aaron Hickey (Hearts), Ryan Porteus (Hibs), Allan Campbell (Mothewell)

    4. Investment in Scottish talent is worthwhile. Players who have a support network of friends and family will feel more comfortable staying for longer. We never managed to tie down Dembele, Wanyama, Hooper, Van Dijk or Forster to a second contract after they made the breakthrough. However, Brown, Griffiths, McGregor, Armstrong & Tierney were all convinced to sign extended deals. Tierney & Armstrong left anyway but we did command bigger fees.
