SPFL Sky TV deal realities

424

The proposed new deal the Guardian report Sky TV and the SPFL are close to agreeing would see a modest uptick of £2m per season to £29.5m.

For that, Sky can broadcast 60 games each year, instead of the current 48 games. Each club would also be able to sell five pay per view (PPV) games.

The analysts I have read is universally hostile. The deal does not compare favourably with similar sized European countries, the average cost per broadcast game drops and there is little account for inflation.

The analysis is also mostly lazy as our misses the point. Scottish football TV audiences are all about two tribes. Viewing figures become noticeable only when they meet.

Oh for an AZ Alkmaar, to bring drama to Celtic games from midtable.

The SPFL sell TV rights in an open and competitive market. It is absurd to bemoan the deal and not recognise the harsh fact that it was better than all others on offer.

It’s all clubs take up their five PPV options, some will be playing to a TV audience of hundreds, perhaps dozens.

  3. The television companies have only ever took the complete piss out of a desperate slp/ spfl that is full of useless folk taking more out the game than they ever put in. The folk that run the game have no bottle. I mean our television payout is no where near comparable to the big, or even middling leagues.

Why not create a subscription based virtual season ticket showing all games for a set cost I.e £300 a year, or monthly payments. The subscriber picks the game they wanna watch on the day. All games kick off on a Saturday or Sunday (euro commitments) at 1pm. The antiquated rule that you can’t show life football at 3pm on a Saturday is bypassed and supporters can more easily plan thier football weekends.

All games shown immediately after the final whistle and available for up to the month.

Classic games available all the time.

Advertising sales for all games, the bigger the games the bigger the cost.

Sell individual games to pubs, clubs and individuals that don’t subscribe – rates and game I.e glasgow and Edinburgh derby etc.

    Steb,

why pay for anything you can get online for free ?

Your target audience is those that like, love scottish football.

    Why pay sky, bt etc?

By using illegal means you run risk of criminal conviction

Illegal channels are not very secure and quality is not great I.e. likely to breakdown buffer etc.

Supporters want the best for their clubs.

Lots of older men and women are pushed away when getting to old and unable to attend games

Lots of folk with disability and sensory impairment miss out on attending games.

the guys who go to the games won’t substitute going for watching in a box, it’s altogether different.

Stable fixture times for supporters ends the crazy amd stupid moving of games to fit sky’s fixture.

By team the avarage weekly attendance in premier league so far this season

    1 Celtic 58,824

    2 Rangers 49,600

    3 Hibernian 20,179

    4 Heart of Midlothian 18,202

    5 Aberdeen 14,420

    6 Livingston 9,672

    7 Kilmarnock 8,014

    8 Dundee United 7,442

    9 St Johnstone 5,793

    10 St Mirren 5,668

    11 Ross County 5,502

    12 Motherwell 4,711

200k turning up to watch their team get those same numbers on the spl paper view subscription at 300 per season, cheap at the price and your talking the guts of 60 million before selling highlight, radio rights, advertising etc…

  7. Melbourne Mick (and our other antipodean fellows), how is Leigh Griffiths getting on in Australia?

  8. Channel 4 managed to secure all England (men) international matches for the next two years, 2022-24. A possible partner for a broadcaster which has not shown football for any number of years. BBC have secured MOTD highlights for the new CL set up as from 2024. First time ever on BBC. Gamechanger. Celtic in a Group of 9 clubs, playing minimum of eight CL matches, some featuring on MOTD. Times are changing, but not as we know it. An Old Firm league with an Old Firm Broadcasting deal. To 2029, seven long years away. Would or could Channel 4 give us £20 mill pa for late Saturday afternoon or evening matches plus some midweek games? Who knows? But I would rather that continue the stranglehold Sky has on us for the foreseeable future. Auldheid, only today, on Sentinel Celts, stated that he would not give any money to Celtic FC. To the Old Firm model. Auldheid? As to our Club, well Paul67 has just told us, we never stop……

Good morning Kev…hope you are well 👍.Important game tomorrow for the Bhoys I dislike Kilmarnock and their plastic pitch in equal measure hopefully Sunday will be the day we put away a fair percentage of our chances and give them a thumping.

Gene – it should and could be written into the rules that pitches are watered for the sake of the game.

As for players sliding on their knees to celebrate, I agree. Firm handshakes all round should be the accepted etiquette for the scoring team.

    C’mon…….get a life man

Celebrating is not only a release, it’s a giruy to the opposition fans who’ve been abusing you and your team for the entire match

    ————

The moral decline of society can be traced directly to the increasing over exuberance of football players goal celebrations.

It may be possible that I believe this and that I actually have an issue with knee slides and other nob handshake related celebrations. On the other hand I may not think that and you may have taken me too literally.

I probably do need to get a life though. I’m posting this at 2.30 am Celtic Park Time. Where did it all go wrong.

Anyhow, as the old saying goes, it’s better to live on your feet than slide across a pristine playing surface on your knees.

    Or is it?

    I can’t decide.

  16. There seems to be some misconception about streaming sites and their legality.

If they are illegal, why have they not been closed down and taken to court?
