SPFL turmoil is about power and control

363

Aberdeen’s chairman Dave Cormack reckons only an(other) independent inquiry will allow reconciliation in Scottish football, so will vote for one today.  If only.  I’m afraid the picture has moved on a mile or two from reconciliation.  Statements by SPFL Dunfermline chairman Ross McArthur and by Brechin City, on behalf of chairman Ken Ferguson (both men are SPFL board members), make it clear the schism within Scottish football runs far deeper than misunderstanding or naked opportunism.

Dunfermline’s McArthur wrote: “I have to provide this statement following the release of accusatory comments in a Club Statement made by the Chairman and CEO of Inverness.

“Since the SPFL director’s resolution was first issued, a number of clubs in the Championship would confirm it is the behaviour of Inverness that has continually been aggressive and confrontational. However, no one felt it necessary to win points in public, as robust conversations take place in the normal course of a competitive business like football.

“Turning to the “allegation” regarding the information that was conveyed by me to Inverness FC, on Friday 10th April 2020.

“It most certainly wasn’t a threat, simply a potential consequence of their action not to back the SPFL resolution currently put in front of them, in favour of a counter resolution which was being mooted at that time.”

The Daily Record chased down this “counter resolution” from Inverness chief exec Scot Gardiner, which was to null and void all four SPFL leagues, removing the possibility of Inverness being promoted through league reconstruction, reducing their SPFL financial pay-out, expose the league to compensation claims from sponsors, broadcasters and others who paid for a league that did not happen.

Why would Inverness embark on a course of action that is so clearly counter to their and the game’s best interests?

In their statement yesterday, Brechin City wrote: “in the recent dossier released in support of the EGM taking place at the SPFL tomorrow… there is an accusation which is pointed directly at our Chairman… this states, “It has also been alleged that Ken Ferguson called League 2 clubs and told them that Inverness had changed their vote to YES and, as a result, the Resolution was going to be approved and that there was no point in League 2 clubs voting NO.””

They go on to state in the most unambiguous terms: “This is categorically refuted.

“In addition to anecdotal evidence from all of the other League 2 clubs, we have in our possession verification from each club that no such call was made. Furthermore, each League 2 club is content to provide corroboration to this effect and has stressed that they are entirely relaxed (and in reality appreciative) of the integrity Ken displayed in his role as an SPFL Director in the lead up to the vote.”

At least one party is bringing the game into disrepute and it is not the man with written verification from every club in his division confirming he is telling the truth.  Today’s resolution will be rejected but the narrative will quickly move on.

Protagonists will make like as difficult as possible for Neil Doncaster, Rod McKenzie and Murdoch MacLellan and they will create havoc for the League if necessary to put their own men in the top jobs.  If you think this was all about stopping Celtic win 9-in-a-row you are wrong, it is about power and control of what happens next.

  1. SPFL slam Rangers for sowing ‘anger and division’ as independent inquiry call voted down

Only 13 clubs backed calls for a probe into the governing body’s handling of the decision to end the lower league season

Sadly Murdoch Mac Lennan goes on to add about the SPFL and ALL Clubs putting this behind us blah blah….and he doesnt sound like someone who wants the Huns fined and/or taken to task….hopefully I am wrong ?

With the decision already made to end the 3 lower leagues, I’d expect Partick Th to count as a bottom 2 league voter.

ICT would therefore be the lone Championship side that voted FOR.

    Possible?

RTB – thanks for posting statement.

Laughed out loud when I read it.

Clearly drafted before the meeting (while slapstick Sevco hunt for their crayons).

    Pannysbhoy – very interesting speculation.

If it is ever confirmed that the only championship club to vote against is Partick Thistle … this is would suggest the Sevco fan is no longer leading ICT’s contribution.

one thing I would try make sure of is preventing that c*nt Gardiner hold

any sort of power in the spfl or sfa as he is one dangerous hun

  10. Call Me Gerry

That is a possibility. I just find it strange that , since today’s vote was set to overturn everything and introduce Null & Void, which would have voided Partick’s relegation too, that the SPFL had already placed them as a League One club for the purposes of this vote.

But, it remains a reasonable attempt to account for this totally wierd situation.

  11. Looks like the SPFL are going to allow Park etc to get away with what they said and alleged, not good at all, or is it within the remit of the SPFL to bring charges or would this be the responsibility of the SFA, anyone know?

  12. celticforever on

perhaps ICT voted against the resolution as they realised that Gardiner

wasn’t doing things for the benefit of ICT but to the benefit of the huns

  13. BBC Scotland chief sports writer Tom English

And so the spin begins. Twenty-seven votes against having an independent inquiry and 13 votes for; 64% of clubs against the investigation into the SPFL’s corporate governance and 31% went in favour.

  14. Has the hun quislings position on the SPFL Board now become even MORE untenable?

Or will he brass it out?

  17. SFTB

As I see it, today’s vote was taken from clubs relevant to their division as it stands today. As such, Partick are not a Championship side, so their vote would be classed as a bottom 2 division vote.

Today’s vote, imo, was not to overturn everything and decide to null & void the season.

The vote was to have an independent inquiry. The result of that inquiry may have led to these things. But as of today, Partick are probably classed as a Div 1 side. Imo.

Peter Lawwell is believed to have made a rousing speech during the meeting that has now ended.

*As I said yesterday and also a few more times before we were founder members of the SFL in 1890, we saved it from steptoe’s greedy mittens in 1993 and today we once again were the saviours.

When sevco were demoted and the tele deal was in jeopardy it was big Gas Meter that Neil Doncaster turned to for help, he accompanied him down to London for the renegotiation’s, it did cost SPL money as their games had to be televised as well, although we did have a lot of delight watching Chauncey put on his Halloween costume and imitate a real manager, however although we ourselves were not in any desperate need of the money the rest of the teams, including sevco, were.

There’s nothing we can do about the scottish freemason association but their power is limited, we still run the game and all the others owe us big time.

As for the ICT CEO, he has as much chance of a job at hades as tango and sash did after the Pars capitulated to them. Actually sash ended up as assistant tae murty for around 5 months and there’s a cracking photie of him standing at the dugout with a bemused look on his face as Broonie celebrates.

I was thinking the same, as Doncaster and MacLennan MAY feel that in future IF they were to go against the Huns or punish them via The SPFL procedures however viable…it might be better if The SFA now pick up the baton and take it out of the SPFL’s hands, and its the SFA that charge the Huns with bringing the game into disrepute etc ?

Also Doncaster and MacLennan IF both or either remain in their place after Today wouldnt be worth two bob…IF they allowed the Huns anger to get to them in any way in future decisions and dealings ?

(I love the disclaimers such as “not a lawyer” or “Apart from technically”) :-

“The Tims much belated response to all this seems like a massive ‘Phew, we might just have got away with it. It was all just a bit of misunderstanding really, nobody’s fault. Now let’s all move on’.

Well sorry to burst your bubble Timmy lurkers, but that ain’t happening. Not until the truth comes out. Everything the SPFL has said and done amounts to a massive, blatant stitch up, and everyone knows it. The clubs who voted against, well they know fine well what has occurred. Even Keevins, Stewart, English, Nicholas, and Commons, to name just a few, wanted an investigation. Including The Sheep, and they hate us even more than you do.

One last thing: Leanne Dempster of Hibs. I thought she might have some integrity in all of this. Turns out I was wrong. If you were at odds with your owners/board Leanne then fair enough, but please do feel free to come out and say so. Otherwise you are just as guilty as the rest.

This has a long way to go people. The truth will out eventually, it’s just a shame there are some in Scottish football that wish to hide it and make it difficult.”

“Why exactly does Liewell want us to move on to? There seems no possibility of restarting playing until the government lifts the ban on large gatherings, we can’t play behind closed doors, there’s not a hope in hell of attracting sponsors or any other investors with the current regime in place, so what the hell does he want to move on to?

There’s never been a better time to cleanse the game of corruption given we’re going to be twiddling our thumbs for the next 6 months. Don’t listen to the hype Rangers, take this all the way…

    No Surrender!”

“I think relations are entirely broken here, Rangers can’t back down.”

“Hard to judge what Rangers do now. Nobody expected us to gain the necessary 75%, but I think we have fallen a few votes short of where we would have liked to have been.

Vote of no confidence would be a mirror of today’s vote and doomed to failure. If we go legal it will literally be us against the SPFL and clubs.

We will be castigated for bringing action that the majority of clubs clearly don’t want.

We would need to be very sure our case would succeed.”

“For us to get 13 (including ourselves) in support of an independent investigation into multiple well-evidenced examples & allegations of poor practice / coercion / bullying / malpractice, etc ….

Unfortunately it adds weight to my own preference, which is to absolutely cripple the game in Scotland.

And I don’t just mean over this current issue.

Keep a note of the other 12 “yes” voters, and have some sympathy (and support …) for them in the coming times of upheaval.

    The rest of them ?

Do everything we can to flush them into oblivion.

    I agree.

We got nearly as many as I thought we would.

In a way, it’s a victory, given that we started out with only three including ourselves.”

“And if Rangers can prove that Doncaster’s original resolution was flawed / prejudiced I’d like t think they’re all f***d ( not a lawyer).”

“Given the areas of concern and statements from a variety of clubs there is no way (other than technically) that this is a vote of confidence in them, and few will believe the same people who think they have done nothing wrong are able to personally address the areas that need looked at around corporate governance and personal trust.”

Oh look – after days of giving prominence to this story (and pro-Sevco spin) ….

… The BBC’s main football page has relegated the result of the vote to near the bottom of the pile !

Articles about how Pogba likes his steak, Tammy Abraham on his PlayStation and

The Rolling Stones (!) are clearly of greater importance.

  23. I don’t think that the members of league could be different from what they were on April 10th. This would lead to chaos. I think they would have to be treated as they were at that date. Therefore, I think ICT and Partick would be treated as Championship clubs for today’s vote. ……………… I may be wrong though 😄

  24. Discounting the 3 clubs who brought the motion, only 10 out of 39 clubs voted yes. That’s 25.6%, not 31%

Agreed. That was obvious from the start.

It invites the question: is Tom English merely a useful idiot or is he aware of this and knowingly giving the narrative a pro-Sevco, er, bias.

If it’s latter, any questions regarding corruption and good governance should be directed towards the tax-payer funded sports department of BBC Scotland.
