We received clarity from Uefa on some important issues yesterday and not on others. Access to the Champions and Europa Leagues next season will be granted only on sporting merit. This finally nailed hopes of the Null and Void Loyal. If a league was declared void, its standings and results would not hold, so no sporting merit could be determined.
If Newco want access to the Europa League qualifiers, they need the SPFL to award a winner and second place, despite their protests. Our old pal Cognitive Dissonance must keep them awake at night.
It is clear from the Uefa statement they have listened and tried to accommodate several scenarios. Where titles are close, like Italy, where Lazio narrowed the gap on Juventus to a point, Uefa suggest a play-off system could allow chasing teams to make up the difference. AZ Alkmaar trail Ajax on goal difference but the Dutch league is expected to call a halt to the campaign as early as today. There are no truly satisfactory closures this season, least of all for Celtic, who will be denied a title winning game.
What we didn’t get was a hard deadline on when teams have to be nominated for European competitions. After discussions with Uefa, the Italian league extended this season’s Serie A to 2 August, so we know for sure the European draws cannot take place until after that date.
I expect we will see European leagues synchronise their moves; there will be no incentive for any radical undertakings. Those without rabid losers will be first to call time, the SPFL will move with the herd, as it should. Then those who called for independent investigations into why the SPFL acted the same way as the rest of Europe will look like the angry losers they are.

Taurangabhoy
“The principle threat in today`s world , long before Covid 19 , comes from Beijing not Washington . ”
I have no love for any Communist government ( I admire Cuba but the family business of government there will end soon) butI don’t think the Chines threat in the West is being evaluated fairly.
In terms of military strength, USA has more than twice the number of military aircraft, and a military budget which is 4 times larger than China’s. The Chinese have many more submarines and slightly more tanks than the US but the most telling differential stat is on nuclear capability. The US have 78 nuclear submarines and the Chinese have 3. In terms of land based nuclear capability, China has around 400 strategic and tactical nuclear weapons, while the US has 10,350 intact warheads with 5,300 considered active or operational. Plus the US is the only country to have actually deployed nuclear weapons in a war.
The Global Peace Index which measures 22 indicators in 3 categories (ongoing domestic or international conflict, societal safety, and security and militarisation) places China at 62 in its list and the US is listed as 63, in a list headed by Afghanistan, Somalia and Syria as 1,2, and 3.
The last time Chinese troops were deployed in Foreign conflict was in 1979 against Vietnam, a war which lasted just under 4 weeks and produced around 30,000 deaths. The list of foreign excursions by US troops is much larger and more recent, as is Russia’s and, indeed the UK’s.
Of course, we do not know the full extent of potential and plans for aggression as China is a secretive country, However, if we base our views on its actions rather than its perceived threat it has done little to warrant the reputation it has had since the post WW2 Communist revolution. It funded and backed the expanse of communism in SE Asia and in parts of Africa in the following 50 years but China then moved to a strategy of state capitalism rather than Communism. It is employing a totalitarian led Capitalist revolution wherein China has stopped being a traditional Communist State and has begun trading openly with Capitalist and non-aligned states. it has ceded some previously guarded freedoms to its population. There is much more freedom to travel and move abroad now though these privileges are carefully monitored and will be taken away from you if you are seen as an enemy of the state or over-critical of its leaders.
It may be the first country to manage a move from totalitarianism to democracy without bloodshed. Revolutions usually occur and Tyrants are usually overthrown when they relax their grip on the oppressed. China has managed to delicately reduce its grip without being seen to be betraying its so-called Communist control. It has now become what Kojo and all the Ayn Rand followers have asked for- a capitalist state run by a strong central figure who exercises “benign control”. But, of course, for anyone being controlled, it is hard to see this as benign. The pro-democracy movement, largely based in Hong Kong, feels that the Party will never make the necessary jump towards elections and the Party cadres feel that they will be infiltrated by foreign powers if they are too quick in moving there.
I am on the side of the Pro democracy movers and feel that China could take the jump towards democracy more quickly than it has chosen to do. Certainly, it will not be the generation of leaders who grew up with Maoist Communism who will make that jump , and, perhaps, if there is economic recession, as is likely, they will never make the jump, as they have much to lose.
Totalitarianism fell in the USSR but Russia has not become fully democratic in the way that its satellite states have. Maybe China will revert back to more Communist control but that has not been the trend of the past 20 years.
Meanwhile we have Trump & Putin making common cause against China ( a scenario predicted by George Orwell). It is understandable that The US resents China’s ability to do capitalism better than they are managing because they have fewer regulations to observe and less regard for international law (copyright , for example).
We have a poor choice in this upcoming war. A Mafia-backed pretendy successful businessman with Clinical levels of narcissism, or an ex KGB gangster who won the war to loot funds in the break up of the Soviet union (with his own homo-erotic brand of narcissism) or the Chinese leader, Xi Jingping, of whom little is known, but also seems fond of censorship, mass surveillance and a cult of personality. Personally, I’d be gald that you have someone human like Jacinda Ardern to lead you, though she is a litle tainted by her spell working with Tony Blair.
P.S. The US economy was in a great position when Obama left office. There were numerous articles about the good economic conditions his successor would enjoy. Trump will use the excuse of the post-COVID recession to explain why his economic policies faield bu tthe truth will remain, the early levels of tax-cutting for his pals is a well tried and failed exercise in economic management. At some stage, those tax cuts have to be paid for and he had no plans, other than a return to a sustained boom economy , with which to recoup the money lost. It was a bet on black in the casino and now that we are heading towaards red territory, the US economy will collapse, as will that of Russia and China. We are not yet out of the threat of a move even further right in all our countries. Fascism is always most popular after an economic collapse.

Gene,
The USA exported murder no a scale far greater than China which was the point of the discussion, I posit the USA numbers are far greater then what China is alleged to have done internally, in fact I expect combine China and Stalin and you’d be getting close.

I did 2 tours of Germany with my sports team so my “local” teams would be Moenchengladbach and Kaiserslautern. Don’t know how the latter have fallen so far- now in division 3.
In fact I’ve got the old ‘rot’ one on in the garden right noow😀
What all of us here in the West need to understand, is that we all consciously or unconsciously, without waving the butchers apron or stars n stripes, buy in to a 500 year old history that’s changed and continues to do so, right under our feet. We can either believe in a unipolar world ultimately controlled by Washington/London or a multipolar world of sovereign states equal under international law. The latter version is open to all, including us, the former will lead to war. I’d recommend an article called Russia China Double Helix.

Normally I would support 🏴☠️ in Bundesliga 2 but they have no chance of winning it so I’ll go for Arminia Bielefeld having lived in Bielefeld for 3 years, that plus the fact they are top and 7 points ahead of those scumbags Hamburger SV.

Better to have credited my remarks to myself rather than tarring Taurangabhoy with my brush .
You provide an excellent well thought out summary . I agree with much of it.
I have no reason to doubt that your statistical comparison of Chinese V US military capability is accurate .
The question , however is what is the Chinese intention ?
And what is the U.S. intention ?
On the obviously superficial level , please have a look at this initial response and tell me if it rings any historical bells .

Kim Jong-un off the bench and put them on the podium.
It’s a Beautiful song BGCFC and it is a a true story. There is a bit of uncertainty about her age, One account has her at 15 another 17.
There is a statue to her both at Ellis Island and at Cobh in Cork where she departed from,
When she died a Celtic Cross was sent over from Ireland to mark her grave.
The song is simply a lament for Emigrants.

How about the war against Hitler`s fascism and Tojo`s imperialism ?
Why don`t you remind us about De Valera`s shameful ” neutrality “.
Painful truth , but truth nevertheless.

Why don`t you remind us about De Valera`s shameful ” neutrality “.
I wasn’t even born and never voted for his party. I’ve seen you mention this before. There was an article in yesterday’s Irish Independent about this matter. It puts the issue in context rather than the scandalous way you portray it. I’m not going to link it but it’s an easy thing to do a Google search.

Fess19,
no to be dismissive but I’m no looking for people to be on my side, I prefer people to be on their own side and make their own judgements, like you did last week, the better that argument I face the better the challenge to my preconceptions. I’d prefer to be wrong but corrected, than wrong and stupidly dogmatic.
Might no seem like that when I dig my heels in but its the reality, Gene’s post today opened a new line of learning for me that I’m happy to take on board however I will maintain that when it comes to genocide I posit the UK & US lead the way on that the world over, between wars, proxy wars, invasions, coups, making them responsible for the actions of the proxy rulers, their economic warfare and the starvation of the populations they claim to be helping.
