Spinning Struth, high integrity and some great Celtic fans

749

It will make little difference to those who really should be paying attention.  Malcolm Murray left the Rangers International board yesterday with a statement to fans unlike anything previously heard from a departing director of a Scottish football club.  His warning is loud and clear, “Events of the last year have seen behaviour that would make the late, great, Bill Struth spin in his grave (no, he doesn’t mean the fact that all faiths are now employed at Ibrox)”.

It’ll make little difference because the groundwork has already been laid to ignore anything Malcolm Murray says by those who in previous years did the bidding of David Murray, Craig Whyte and Charles Green.  Notions of having a club “run by men of the highest integrity” don’t fit the narrative, talk of “mysterious individuals” will not be heard.

We’re now watching the equivalent of the opening scenes of Police Academy 4, the same farce will unfold with increasingly less interest from the wider world.

I know lots of good Celtic fans, lots and lots of them. Respect today to those who buy Overseas Season Tickets, meaning they can attend five games per season, but they buy tickets to 16 games for underprivileged supporters.

We are part of a genuinely incredible body of people. Stories like this simply don’t happen elsewhere. If you’re part of ‘the programme’, well done.

Just checked, Police Academy 4 was subtitled ‘Citizens on Patrol’. If only!!

  4. Not too concerned about the results pre season. The way I see it, it’s a chance to test formations, and players that may or may not work against opposition that ‘won’t go easy on them’

Others it seems, would prefer this was done in league or cup games.

  5. Wee article about Vic..

With Southampton poised to complete a £12.5m transfer, Neil Lennon doesn’t expect to have Victor Wanyama at his disposal next season: “In an ideal world I’d be delighted if Victor was here but I have reservations about that,” he told the Daily Record.

“It’s too big a deal not to go through and I think it will get done this week.”

Big deal for a big player. It’s also worth remembering what an epic contribution the Kenyan had to a hugely successful campaign. He started 47 of Celtic’s 59 matches – the third most used outfield player -missing just 2 of 12 European matches (Spartak home and Helsingborgs away).

Since arriving from Germinal Beerschot for just £900k 2 seasons ago, Wanyama built a reputation for being a no-nonsense, tough-tackling ‘destructive’ midfielder. His size and power has also tempted Lennon to use him as a centre-back although latterly that’s been a rare occurrence.

    Victor Wanyama 2012-13

The foremost thought in Lennon’s mind of course had been getting Wanyama into the team full stop, though the availability of others have influenced where exactly he fits in. Typically if Scott Brown has been missing, he’d be used on the right; if Joe Ledley missing on the left. As the 3 man midfield became the norm, Wanyama stood out as the most important player in the system plugging the gap between the lines and generally playing as a holding midfield ballwinner.

There was a spell – most notably in Europe – where Wanyama was encouraged to become more expansive with his distribution. Sweeping cross field diagonal balls (for example) against Barcelona in an effort to spread play, build attacks and broaden his own footballing horizon.

Such an attacking twist to his overall play accompanied peak interest from some of the biggest sides in the world, like Manchester Utd. Perhaps this was no coincidence, especially given Alex Ferguson’s thoughts earlier in the season on “holding” midfielders:”I don’t think we’ve had a holding player since I’ve been here. We’ve never had a holding player. We tried to get Roy Keane to do that but he just couldn’t, so I’ve not had it for 25 years. Why should I think about it now?”

Sir Alex expanded, hinting perhaps as to why the elite European sides aren’t knocking down the door of Ivan Modia, Wanyama’s agent: “If you look at the examples, Fabregas was one of the best midfield players in England for five years but he wasn’t a big lad and wasn’t a holding player. He was an attacking player. Xavi and [Andres] Iniesta are small players – you can’t call them holding players.”

Across the board of the elite, it’s difficult to find a strict destroyer as per Wanyama. The likes of Sami Khedira, İlkay Gündoğan, Paulinho, Javi Martinez and Jack Wilshire are the blueprint for a modern “defensive-minded” midfielder. Or in other words, more dynamic, technical even players.

An alternative use at an elite club, presumably would be a place in defence. In a similar kind of way that Daniel De Rossi, Sergio Busquets, Alexander Song and David Luiz blur the line between centre-back and defensive midfielder. Even Ferguson’s own Michael Carrick has been used in defence. More Celtic-centric, and on the flip-side – Virgil Van Dijk played in midfield against FC Cluj, so it appears that the old-school brutish centre-back is on the way out – there’s no room on the pitch anymore for those who don’t like the ball at feet. A movement quite evident at Celtic.

In a relegation dogfight, Southampton probably won’t be concerned with the attacking ideals permeating Lennon’s mind, so one might expect to see Wanyama ‘holding’ as he did for Celtic. Former Saints player Gordon Watson believes he’ll be the perfect foil for creative talent Morgan Schneiderlin: ”Having somebody like him in the middle of the park would probably free up Morgan to do a bit more damage in the final third.

“He’s big, strong, wins the ball, gives it, turns defence into attack and he gets on the end of things from set pieces.”

This has always been his USP – pure physical prowess. 9 goals this season is a fabulous return for a defensive player – with 6 coming directly from set-pieces, the pinnacle being that header at Celtic Park against Barcelona which setup a famous 2-1 victory. Even the greatest players in the world struggle against Wanyama’s colossal determination.

The uncertainty of his future job title won’t remove from the fact that Wanyama is the most talented Celtic export since Henrik Larsson, and will surely go on to bigger things than relegation battles. The approximate profit of £11.4m reflects not only his quality, but another success story in Peter Lawwell and Lennon’s transfer strategy.

Its a while since I read a book about McDonalds called The Golden Arch or similar.

A great read but the incredible thing is how their core wealth came not from de burgers but de premises they made and sold burgers in.

I remember that a stand off developed between Ray Krogh (?) who developed the whole shebang from seeing the popularity of a burger and a coke for a dollar at the stall of the McDonald brothers and cannot remember which side were burgers and which side real estate. However as an example of how a business can grow and change shape it is an interesting read.

On your main point about divorcing the risks to the business from football failure that is spot on which is why the support need to feel fully engaged by means other than by SB attendances.
