Spinning Struth, high integrity and some great Celtic fans

749

It will make little difference to those who really should be paying attention.  Malcolm Murray left the Rangers International board yesterday with a statement to fans unlike anything previously heard from a departing director of a Scottish football club.  His warning is loud and clear, “Events of the last year have seen behaviour that would make the late, great, Bill Struth spin in his grave (no, he doesn’t mean the fact that all faiths are now employed at Ibrox)”.

It’ll make little difference because the groundwork has already been laid to ignore anything Malcolm Murray says by those who in previous years did the bidding of David Murray, Craig Whyte and Charles Green.  Notions of having a club “run by men of the highest integrity” don’t fit the narrative, talk of “mysterious individuals” will not be heard.

We’re now watching the equivalent of the opening scenes of Police Academy 4, the same farce will unfold with increasingly less interest from the wider world.

I know lots of good Celtic fans, lots and lots of them. Respect today to those who buy Overseas Season Tickets, meaning they can attend five games per season, but they buy tickets to 16 games for underprivileged supporters.

We are part of a genuinely incredible body of people. Stories like this simply don’t happen elsewhere. If you’re part of ‘the programme’, well done.

Just checked, Police Academy 4 was subtitled ‘Citizens on Patrol’. If only!!

  2. Analytics company FootballRadar selected it’s Eredivisie team of the season. In at Centre Back – Virgil.

CB: Virgil van Dijk (FC Groningen)

Only relegated sides VVV-Venlo and Willem II scored fewer goals than Groningen this season, yet the latter still finished the season in a respectable seventh place, earning their spot in the European play-offs at the end of the campaign. Such success, therefore, was largely due to their strength at the back, and van Dijk’s contribution to the side could not have been any greater. Particularly strong in the air (at both ends of the pitch), and an excellent reader of the game at just 21, van Dijk is also comfortable in possession and regularly looks to carry the ball forward out of the back four. While it was a little surprising to see him left out of the Dutch U21 squad for the European Championships, his performances this season have not gone unnoticed and having failed to complete a move to Brighton in January, Scottish champions Celtic have been quick to secure his services already this summer.

Interesting spiel. There are some on here, notably stephbhoy, who have argued for years, that Celtic should diversify, not away from football, but in ways that benefit from positive links with the club. And I am not talking drinking cider with Rosie here. Only one club in London have a hotel, Chelsea FC, but you really would not want to stay in that part of Fulham. There is of course the Chelsea Hotel in New York, which is in er Chelsea, and is more famous for Bobby Dylan than Bobby Tambling. And yet, no Celtic Hotel, in Glasgow, in London, or even in Beantown. Now, I do not know of course if you are tapping into the zeitgeist, or trying to fly a proverbial kite out there in the Nevada desert, but I do hope that. You are on to something!

  12. if hotels were a PROFITABLE diversification for football enterprises would Man Utd , Real Madrid, Dortmund etc etc etc not allready have them ?

Is there any PROFITABLE example of one currently operating ?

  13. News that Wanyama is about to join saints, great return on the player, my only concern is this talk from Lennon and Kayal that he is a ready made replacement is worrying, that’s the equivalent of trading a Aston Martin in for a Skoda, gets caught in possession too many times and would rather stop to moan at the ref than get the ball back!! And who could forget his pish at Rugby park while being 3-0 down and a dozen or so points behind the huns, am sorry but this guy isn’t dependable, hope its paper talk and we have a quality replacement lined up.

  14. Celtic Mac

Went to Lyon to watch the Hoops when big Bobo handled in the last minute to put us out and the club own loads of things like restaurants and even barbers.

There is scope to open Celtic minded places and a hotel seems a decent start. I reckon it would be a gold mine in Glasgow. Memorabilia in various rooms and a bar and stuff. It would make a fortune and would become a must stay for any Celtic fan who was visiting the city for any purpose and staying the night.

These sorts of projects may be on the horizon. I have said before on here that with the ground, training grounds and the triangle there is still much to do but a hotel would be a good way to generate cash that’s for sure. Not in the hotel business and never have been and I would imagine it would take a lot to set up such a project.

Wee Ashton Agar goes to 96 not out.

He’s 19 years old. It’s his debut. He’s only played ten first-class matches in his life. He quickly achieved the highest test score for a player making his debut at number 11. He’s just become the highest-scoring number 11 in test history.

His two wee brothers reckon they’re better than Ashton.
