Spinning Struth, high integrity and some great Celtic fans

749

It will make little difference to those who really should be paying attention.  Malcolm Murray left the Rangers International board yesterday with a statement to fans unlike anything previously heard from a departing director of a Scottish football club.  His warning is loud and clear, “Events of the last year have seen behaviour that would make the late, great, Bill Struth spin in his grave (no, he doesn’t mean the fact that all faiths are now employed at Ibrox)”.

It’ll make little difference because the groundwork has already been laid to ignore anything Malcolm Murray says by those who in previous years did the bidding of David Murray, Craig Whyte and Charles Green.  Notions of having a club “run by men of the highest integrity” don’t fit the narrative, talk of “mysterious individuals” will not be heard.

We’re now watching the equivalent of the opening scenes of Police Academy 4, the same farce will unfold with increasingly less interest from the wider world.

I know lots of good Celtic fans, lots and lots of them. Respect today to those who buy Overseas Season Tickets, meaning they can attend five games per season, but they buy tickets to 16 games for underprivileged supporters.

We are part of a genuinely incredible body of people. Stories like this simply don’t happen elsewhere. If you’re part of ‘the programme’, well done.

Just checked, Police Academy 4 was subtitled ‘Citizens on Patrol’. If only!!

    Interesting synopsis……

The board are keeping their powder dry by accumulating the money to fund capital infrastructure projects in and around CP to generate revenue and insulate the club from having to play in Scotland, declining SB numbers and Scotland demographics generally?

I t would work if the hotel bed prices, food and drink prices are more or less the same levels as what supporters are paying at the moment……

But then again I’d rather see investment in the team first.

I was at at wedding last Friday where I bumped into an old mate, a 62 year old Sevconian.

This is a thoroughly decent and rational guy and he brought up the subject of how Scottish Fitba is struggling with them being out the league. I listened to his take on things, not wanting to start heating it up on the occasion. Basically every point he made had RFC blameless. No mention of SDM, Walter, Green, Ticketus etc but Whyte got one sentence. He saw his club as totally innocent and indeed being the victim. He hinted at future boycotts of grounds, especially Tannadice. Rather than get bogged down the rest of the evening with an argument I knew I’d win, I decided on one question for him.

‘If CFC had all the claims against them which his club had, guilty or not guilty, how many Rangers fans would want Celtic back in the SPL for the good of Scottish Football?’……

.His Answer….’What’s that you and your wife’s drinking?’

Its actually quite scary how even the most sensible people can allow themselves to be brainwashed.

  8. Wanyama, Southampton, Hull City, Norwich…

A question to Gary Hooper – a two bit team playing in a big league or a big team playing in a two bit league? You can give that big team the opportunity also to play the really big boys in the CL. When you look at matters like that, is there really a choice? Until a top 8 EPL team enters the market, any player that leaves is, in my opinion, motivated by the extra money in his pocket. The Liebherr Trust may have wads of cash but Southampton is at best a mid table club in a mid table city on the sleepy south coast where events are livened by the masses of OAPs departing on cruise ships.

  13. Livibhoy, Proudbhoy, Celtic Mac, i agree it will have to cater for all expats , a good place to eat, drink, watch matches and buy merchandise. The likes of Hard Rock cafe, O’Neils, Walkabout, is where i was coming from. I have been to Madrid, Barcelona & Rome and its a pain to find out where to go first of all and getting the match can be a nightmare. With the right people Celtic could set up a Celtic Bars Group to build on the O’Neils above, my question is how many other clubs have the expat diaspora that Celtic have, as big as real madrid, barcelona, etc are they cant capitalize on this and the Irish Bars have trailblazed this route for us.

I would think that the Celtic FC is an element/ feature but not the be all and end all it has to appeal to all expats, visitors & locals to the respective countries. Just surfaces when our games are on, but the merchandising will be available but not in your face.

  20. Proudbhoy, you are right the csc could be a template of where to develop the brand. The major cities in Europe would be a start. I’d be the same as you i’d want to go there , catch the games on tv and make new friends all part of the experience. By putting roots down in these cities we create a global chain attracting expats who live there, csc’s, locals and tourists all of which should be enough to sustain the businesses.

With the merchandising element we make even more money and have a strong presence. If the team is touring then they can go there and raise the profile and press the flesh with the fans. The club can add these bars to their app so we are always aware of where to go when abroad and the money we spend goes back to the club. Put an office in Dublin and only pay12.5% tax across Europe, oops i’ll grab my coat!!!
