Spirit of 67 reached out and touched us

431

As the excitement of Saturday begins to fade perspective begins to dawn. If Hollywood scripted homage to Lisbon, this was it. The stage was set 50 years and two days after the event for a truly unique, inVIncible, treble.

In ’67, Celtic came from behind. In 2017, they did the same. In ’67, Inter tired as a relentless Celtic pressed for the winner, just as Aberdeen did on Saturday. You and me have left Hampden after many cup wins, but I don’t remember as elated a crowd as Saturday’s. It was as though the Spirit of ’67 reached out and touched us.

Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic will compete with each other, and with new faces, for the precious central midfield roles next season, but both delivered big time on Saturday. It you watch Stuart’s goal, it had a touch of the Tommy Gemmell’s about it, with Shay Logan turning side-on, just as the nearest Inter defender to Tommy did.

“Don’t let him get onto his left”, is surely what every defender says when facing Tom Rogic. In particular, every Aberdeen defender. The big Aussie is so potent with his left foot. But we all need a second option in life, and Tom’s is the confidence and ability to take a chance on his right.

Stuart and Tom will both improve next season. Think about that.

I see Tiger Woods was arrested for DWI last night …. he seems to be on a downward spiral …. sad to see from one of the athletes of his generation …. he seems to have some demons, and whether or not he gets back to the level of golf he once played, hopefully, he gets some help on a personal level …

Thanks very much for posting that photo of the work ongoing at Celtic Park, as I had read Brendan a few weeks ago complaining about our pitch hindering our style of play………MAGIC.

    What I said was

‘Hopefully for next season we can let the whole Lisbon thing recede just a wee bit.’

So you weren’t quoting me. At best you were attempting to paraphrase what I said. But you made a hash of it.

Big Jimmy – they would all have been as nervous as kittens before kick off, considering they stood on the brink of creating a record that in all probability will never be beaten Taking that into account, it was a fantastic second half display, up there with their best performances of the season

Hmmm – so it could be getting worse for Sevco supporters.

Not happy with mere Espanyolification – Pedro is pushing ahead with full blown Fenianification?

So Proud of Our Club – God Bless them All

Nerves are perfectly understandable when the monumentous outcome of a victory was hanging over the outcome.

I thought we started well enough but some of Madhuns decisions caused us to have a little self doubt.

Every fifty/fifty went to them and the blatant unpunished assault on KT really gave us the jitters for the rest of first half as well as some strange linesmen flags.

Considering we have been robbed of this trophy a few times i recent years it had to be on the players minds as most have fell victim to corrupt officialdom.

  11. The pitch will be made ready this close season for the hybrid pitch. There is not enough time for it to be completed before the CL qualifiers por cierto.

Looked like he’d been DWI on the course for a few years now…….

Joking aside, hope he gets the help he needs. We might never see anyone dominate the game the way he did.

And while I’m on my high horse.

Hopefully for next season we can let the whole Lisbon thing recede just a wee bit. It’s become a ghost haunting current squads. A monkey on their back.

    ———————————————————————————

You are paraphrasing yourself Ernie, this is the full comment, and in the context of several other posts today, begrudging the teams achievements this year the general tone was dismissive of the Club, and it’s achievements current and past.

But, hey ho, we have agreed and disagreed in the past, and will do so again.

I just found your tone overall in the exchanges negative in the extreme.

Lisbon ‘a monkey on their back’

    Your words.

Deary me Ernie, in the week we celebrated the 50th anniversary, poor comments.

You’re entitled to your opinion but you are not entitled to misrepresent mine.

  19. Ernie, see the post directly above, no misrepresentation there.

Misinterpretation, I don’t think so, I have read again your words, and reproduced them here.

If there is misinterpretation I am happy to listen, as mentioned we have agreed and disagreed in the past, and would not look to misrepresent, I’m surprised you think I would.

I don’t think we will see the SMSM saying much about it – but was our 16 goals scored against Sevco the highest total scored against any opposition this season?

  22. Good evening friends.

Personally, I’d be delighted if next season (and for all seasons after that) we continue with the 67th minute singing of ‘In The Heat Of Lisbon’. A good song to sing, and great that we always know to sing it at that point, regardless of what’s happening on the park.

Let’s sing In The Heat of Lisbon forever on 67 minutes. The least we can do!

Europe should be Celtic’s vision. It’s where the Celtic history is immortalized with the yardstick of Lisbon. Lawwell wont see it that way. Hopefully DD and BR do. A treble is a good sign though. Let’s see what decisions the illustrious Old Firm loving PLC do in the summer
