Spivs in for the long haul, relegate Hibs

428

Rangers International adopted a firm position in their court hearing against former director, Imran Ahmed, in Edinburgh yesterday.  Directors and major shareholders know they have a cash shortfall for next season, even if season ticket sales are as higher than anticipated.  Therefore, they know they will need to facilitate a loan, cough up for more shares or issue shares to new investors.   A few million here or there from season tickets will not change this fact – so the argument goes.

With that in mind the club is under no serious threat from fans turning towards Dave King’s glorious attempt to deprive them of cash.  Contrary to earlier reports, organised protests against the Easdales, Ashley and Laxey Partners is in no danger of putting the club under.

The best case scenario for King and his Band of Protagonists is that the club owners would be worn out by the sheer hassle of dealing with their campaign and would wilt before cutting a deal with him on very easy terms.  This does not look likely today, the owners appear intent on getting a return for their money.

At various times during the past two years I’ve offered goodwill towards Hibernian, wishing them well against Hearts in the 2012 Cup Final, encouraging them after they lost to Celtic in the 2013 Final, and on the Hail Hail Media Celtic History podcast I spoke about The Famous Five being the best team in Europe in the late 40s, but I’m all Hibs-d out.  I hope they are relegated.

50 years ago Hibs were almost the same size a club as Celtic, although Hibs were far more successful at the time.  The decades since have utterly destroyed whatever legacy left by The Famous Five.  Sir Tom Farmer’s ownership has provided financial stability but when he combined with Rod Petrie the pair contrived to bring about the most wasteful partnership in the history of the Scottish game – and that includes Sir David Murray’s years of unrestrained bombast.

New chief executive, Leann Dempster, has been more than a firm hand on the tiller at Motherwell, she delivered success over and above their station, but Hibs are so afflicted you wonder is anyone will be able to resurrect it with Petrie still in the chair, Farmer in ultimate control and Terry Butcher in the dugout.  Not only do they deserve relegation, it may be necessary for Dempster to clear-out the deadwood above and below her.  Better to be relegated than stumble on with Petrie and his Inverse Midas Touch.

Some good Celtic fans and CQN’ers are holding an event at Monroe’s Tavern in Galway tomorrow in aid of Console, the Irish suicide prevention charity.  One of the many auction items is the photo above, signed by Bertie Auld.  If you would like to help Console, stick a wee bid into ruairigucks@gmail.com .

I think Dundee under Paul Hartley will greatly enhance the SPFL next season as will getting rid of dross like Kilmarnock or Hibs. Couldn’t give a keech which of them goes down.

  3. We’ve a couple of Hibs supporters come into the pub to watch them when they play the Bhoys. Decent blokes. Wish them no ill …

Whether Hibernian or Kilmarnock (or neither) go down, the Scottish Championship will be the best league in Europe next season. We know this is the line our media jokers are already peddling.

So that is a competition filled with teams not good enough to play in the Scottish Premiership or teams who have never played in the top league – who can argue with that logic?

Beat me to it SRS – I was thinking exactly the same. Get ready for a deluge of delusion.

‘ food can be served until 15 minutes before kick-off and it will reopen before matches end’

-another reason for some to leave early.

Get the quails’ eggs before they’re all done.

  6. Crazy thought – to make the league more interesting could Celtic suggest we accept a handicap, maybe start the season on minus 9 points? Enough to give Aberdeen, Dundee Utd etc the chance to win the league but still will plenty of margin for us to catch up? Worth a try…

  7. It was important Sevco won that case yesterday. Not from the point of view they needed the £650,000 to survive but if they had lost it would have been the death knell for the sale of any more season tickets as the judge would be effectively saying their skint.

Not even Sevco fans would continue to buy season tickets then. (mmm!)

But will these monies be used to keep them going into the new season and long enough to arrange a new share issue. Nope !

They needed a loan of £1.5m just to reach the period when new ST’s are sold. If they are spending approx. £2m per month those monies have now gone.

    Let’s assume they sell 10,000 ST’s at £400 each , that’s £4.0m in the bank.

Prediction: The SPIVS are not interested in keeping Sevco going into next season, they see the writing on the wall and pull the plug before the payroll is due i.e. end May. They will siphon off any monies to pay bonuses and transfer any cash to Rangers International in payment of the debt owed to the holding company and will also transfer Ibrox and Murray Park to Rangers International. All before the end of May. Administration to follow shortly afterwards.

wining captains. I believe the MOTY has another view on this.

He thinks we should be playing with 10 men since it’s obviously helped him get the much coveted accolade.

Hibs are far from being my least favourite other team. Hope they stay up.

  13. The Battered Bunnet on

Dunno what your beef with Hibs is Paul. They conduct their business in good order, have a top quality stadium, training complex and youth academy, and have a habit of appointing promising young managers many of whom subsequently bomb in the job.

Before Butcher, each of Fenlon, Calderwood, Hughes, Paatelainen, Collins, Mowbray were all, on paper, interesting choices with decent credentials, and had varying success.

Their diminishing results on the pitch map with the diminishing returns from their academy, coinciding with the departure of John Parks to Celtic, albeit that was 7 years ago now and ought to have been sorted.

We need more clubs like Hibs, and let’s face it, Hibs are by no means alone in producing underwhelming results from an otherwise sound basis.

  14. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

I’d prefer Hibs to stay in the top league and deprive the huns of a “big” match. Plus, killie are the team I would dearly love to see drop down. They were the club who sneakily abstained in the vote v the new huns.

In the other direction I’d love to see QOS come up. In my household it would add a whole new dimension to pumping ra doonhamers.

Libertadores QF first leg games tonight too. So will wheech up something later on.

  19. Interesting fact re Hib’s popularity 50 years ago. And a look at the attendance figures. It was always an assumption of mine that the 80’s thru’ 90’s increase in Ibrox attendance was due, in part at least to the fall in attendance at St Mirren, Morton, Airdrie, Motherwell etc….

Wonder if we have a Season Book collapse at Ibrox, if the Chick Young effect will begin to reverse and fans will return to their hometown Clubs?

  20. Hamiltontim is praying for Oscar on

Usually my analysis and perception of another football club is dictated by their supporters and not their business acumen. For that reason I’d be happy to see Hibs go down.

I make an exception with the sweaty, bedragled mob from the south side who would meet both criteria.

    With all due respect,

Celtic, by continuing to accept the current SFA refereeing setup, which is devoid of accountability to their customers,I.E. the SPFL clubs, have by implication accepted a handicap.
