Spivs in for the long haul, relegate Hibs

428

Rangers International adopted a firm position in their court hearing against former director, Imran Ahmed, in Edinburgh yesterday.  Directors and major shareholders know they have a cash shortfall for next season, even if season ticket sales are as higher than anticipated.  Therefore, they know they will need to facilitate a loan, cough up for more shares or issue shares to new investors.   A few million here or there from season tickets will not change this fact – so the argument goes.

With that in mind the club is under no serious threat from fans turning towards Dave King’s glorious attempt to deprive them of cash.  Contrary to earlier reports, organised protests against the Easdales, Ashley and Laxey Partners is in no danger of putting the club under.

The best case scenario for King and his Band of Protagonists is that the club owners would be worn out by the sheer hassle of dealing with their campaign and would wilt before cutting a deal with him on very easy terms.  This does not look likely today, the owners appear intent on getting a return for their money.

At various times during the past two years I’ve offered goodwill towards Hibernian, wishing them well against Hearts in the 2012 Cup Final, encouraging them after they lost to Celtic in the 2013 Final, and on the Hail Hail Media Celtic History podcast I spoke about The Famous Five being the best team in Europe in the late 40s, but I’m all Hibs-d out.  I hope they are relegated.

50 years ago Hibs were almost the same size a club as Celtic, although Hibs were far more successful at the time.  The decades since have utterly destroyed whatever legacy left by The Famous Five.  Sir Tom Farmer’s ownership has provided financial stability but when he combined with Rod Petrie the pair contrived to bring about the most wasteful partnership in the history of the Scottish game – and that includes Sir David Murray’s years of unrestrained bombast.

New chief executive, Leann Dempster, has been more than a firm hand on the tiller at Motherwell, she delivered success over and above their station, but Hibs are so afflicted you wonder is anyone will be able to resurrect it with Petrie still in the chair, Farmer in ultimate control and Terry Butcher in the dugout.  Not only do they deserve relegation, it may be necessary for Dempster to clear-out the deadwood above and below her.  Better to be relegated than stumble on with Petrie and his Inverse Midas Touch.

Some good Celtic fans and CQN’ers are holding an event at Monroe’s Tavern in Galway tomorrow in aid of Console, the Irish suicide prevention charity.  One of the many auction items is the photo above, signed by Bertie Auld.  If you would like to help Console, stick a wee bid into ruairigucks@gmail.com .

Wonder if we have a Season Book collapse at Ibrox, if the Chick Young effect will begin to reverse and fans will return to their hometown Clubs?

I thought it was a disaster three and a half years ago when I damaged my hip and due to the arthritis in my hip was offered a hip replacement as the only solution. Never caused me any problems (touch wood) so far.

The knee’s are not quite so “Lego” like as the hips (one bit wears out replace with a new bit) but if it fixes the problem mate you’ll feel like a new man!

My brother in law is a ex football player, briefly played for The Rangers in the seventies, he had two knee replacements in the last four years and still plays golf, walks and is pain free.

Hope it all goes well regardless. Hopefully catch up with you on Saturday.

Manager set to make changes for Saints game

By: Paul Cuddihy on 07 May, 2014 09:23

HAVING picked the same starting XI for the previous two league matches, Neil Lennon has admitted that there will be changes for this Wednesday night’s fixture with St Johnstone.

Lukasz Zaluska is set to make only his second appearance this season in place of Fraser Forster, while Emilio Izaguirre will also be missing from the team, the Honduran internationalist having been given some time off before he meets up with his international team-mates to begin preparations for the World Cup.

And there could be other personnel changes for the penultimate game of another successful league season.

“I’m looking at the likes of Balde, Pukki, Boerrigter and Zaluska, and I’m hoping to give all of them a start,” the manager said.

“We’ve given Emilio some time off before he goes and meets up with Honduras. The rest of the lads haven’t asked for the time off as yet, but the facility’s there if they want to do that. But Emilio’s hooking up with his squad soon so we’ve given him a couple of weeks off before then.

“Lukasz is starting tomorrow. It’s a difficult role being No.2 but then again, you look at Steve Harper, who’s playing at Hull. He was deputy goalkeeper at Newcastle for a long time.

“Lukasz is comfortable in the role, he accepts the role he has to play, and he’s a very good professional, and we’re very happy with that.”

Celtic go into the match on 95 points and with 96 goals scored. They could pass the 100-mark in both categories by the time the final whistle on the season sounds this Sunday afternoon at Celtic Park.

And it’s certainly an incentive for the players at McDiarmid Park tonight.

“It would be a nice milestone,” the manager admitted. “To get 100 goals in a season would be fantastic, and to get 100 points is a mark of fantastic consistency.

“It feels such a long time ago that we won the league but the football that we’re playing is very good, and the intensity and attitude of the players is fantastic so we’re in a very good place at the minute.”

As for St Johnstone, their focus is split between their last two league games and another appearance at Celtic Park when they face Dundee United in the Scottish Cup final.

It’s the first time the Perth club have reached this stage of the competition, and it represents a successful first season in charge for Tommy Wright.

“I felt he was a good fit for the job,” said Neil Lennon. “He worked well with Steve Lomas last year and the transition was comfortable, the players knew Tommy. He’s got a good sidekick there in Calum Davidson, and Alex Clelland’s been there for a while.

“He was disappointed in their showing in the League Cup semi-final, but their performance at Ibrox against Aberdeen was brilliant, so for them to be in a cup final and in the top six – I don’t think St Johnstone could have asked for any more from what he’s done this season.”

Georgios Samaras will miss Wednesday night’s game with a virus, but there are no new injury worries from Saturday’s 5-2 victory over Aberdeen.

It’s just not good enough that all the top teams have made it to the Championship and we have not.

Crazy thought – to make the league more interesting could Celtic suggest we accept a handicap, maybe start the season on minus 9 points? Enough to give Aberdeen, Dundee Utd etc the chance to win the league but still will plenty of margin for us to catch up? Worth a try…

How do they arrive at those numbers? As you say, season ticket sales obviously included regardless of how many turn up on the day.

The annoying feature in all of this for me, and Keevins is the worst offender, is peddling the numbers that the SPL is down by x percent, which is the argument used to tell us why the SPL needs them back.

The missing headcount from the past 2 seasons from the SPL has been redistributed throughout the 2 lower divisions. Those heads are not missing, you just need to look in the correct places to find them. Of course though, that does not fit with the picture they wish to portray, which is why the numbers are presented the way they are.
