SPL dominoes might all fancy ditching HMRC debt

1072

It’s difficult not to associate Hearts’ owner, Vladimir Romanov’s outburst on their club website yesterday with the current issue over Rangers finances, which could soon see the SPL, the SFA and the media take sides between Rangers and their creditors, in particular HM Revenue and Customs.

Romanov’s rant on the demise of the Scottish game was ignorable until he dragged in the “tax authorities” for blame.  As you and I know, the tax authorities don’t play favourites, they collect vat, income, corporation and other taxes in line with the law.

Hearts failed to pay player wages last month and Romanov now says, “there is no point is spending millions to watch someone else’s show”.  Most of Hearts debt is owed to Romanov’s own bank but if player wages are unpaid there is a good chance HMRC will also be outstanding, explaining the “tax authorities” reference.

If a new football club playing at Ibrox is ushered into the SPL with a points tally calculated from the position of a defunct Rangers you can expect a gold-rush of clubs ready to flush their debts to the country, and history, away.

Well done to STV who yesterday revealed the actual decision making process which would be put in place to judge an application to join the league midseason or at any other time.  The SPL board, by simple majority, have the decision, while the SFA need to ratify membership.

If the SPL board vote to reward bad debtors’ shares in their league what incentive would most clubs have to pay their bills?  Fortunately, our history is more valuable than any amount of cash.

The new issue of CQN Magazine will be out next week, let me know if you would like to advertise, celticquicknews@gmail.com.

  6. Celtic have been one of few forward thinking clubs their model should be used by all clubs.

Celtic should lay out their proposals once the administration/liquidation happens at Rangers and Hearts.

Reduced admission prices: The price of tickets is driving fans away. Bring back the crowds. Most clubs make their cash through the gate.

All matches to kick off at 3pm on a Saturday: Football on TV is dying. There is only a small window of opportunity left. Games will be on the internet for free or very little before long.

Any TV or live streaming revenues lie with the club:

If we want to stream a match live at 3pm on the internet we should be able to (for a fee).

Other clubs will be happy that they are playing at 3pm every week and their fans will come back. Doesn’t matter if the game is on live if the price is right and the match is that their ground they will attend. Surely a Saturday match is better than Sunday at 12pm etc.

We can’t compete with England for TV revenues and we are getting less and less with every deal. Let’s forget it and leave Sunday so people can watch the EPL super Sunday and Scottish fans can attend their matches on a Saturday.

Scotland is a small country. Out with Scotland their is very little interest in our game. The fans abroad who support Celtic can watch our games accross the world on a Saturday and the fans in the UK and Eire can travel on a Saturday and enjoy their match experience without having to change plans due to rescheduling for a Sunday. Games should only be changed to benefit clubs in Europe.

Bring back the winter break: Scotland has increasingly poor weather in the winter and the break helps rest pitches and allow fans to avoid sitting in stadiums in the worst of the weather.

Ensure all clubs in the top league have under soil heating or appropriate provisions to ensure games are on: It’s been too easy for teams to call off matches when it hasn’t suited them in poor weather in the last few years.

This is a chance to change the whole game in Scotland for the better and Celtic need to take the lead. If the other clubs want to live in the past and continue with a status quo then Celtic have to consider resigning from the league.

  8. So Mulgrew is injured and Rogne hasn’t been registered which leaves only Loovens and Majstorovic as our only two centre halves. Also Ledley is injured, who has been playing LB in Europe seeing as El Kaddouri can’t play. This means we will have to have a right back playing left back, probably Matthews with either Cha or M. Wilson at RB.

I asked the very same question a few days ago. I don’t get it at all. What superior position? What position of influence? We can demand changes to SPL structures – I’ve read that several times and all uncontested. Would someone PLEASE explain to me how we would be in a position to do anything, demand change, reconstruction whatever. Would someone PLEASE explain to this ignoramus how we can use this present position to improve our lot one iota.

  18. I am not convinced that the other clubs will necessarily vote to maintain the Old Firm. Many of the smaller teams may view this as an opportunity to get rid of that model for good. Their chairman might also fancy their chances of recruiting quite a few huns with bus fare. The clubs might be facing oblivion but their fans are not. Plenty of paying customers addicted to hating Celtic. Some Government help might be needed until a new structure is set up.

Reagan can market it as the change that the game is crying out for and presents a good opportunity to reattract those who have been disaffected over the years by Old Firm dominance on and off the park. He can also tub thump that its a good opportunity to implement some of Henry McLeishs proposals.

How much influence does the SFL have within the SFA as this directly affects them too.

I believe this should all be possible but I am convinced that Scotland does not have the expertise to make this happen.

If we cannot leave the SPL this should be our plan B if the non Old firm clubs can’t be made to see this then they should be informed by us that they are slitting their own throa

  19. greenjedi – “and as a last resort resign from the league due to corruption”

I see a lot of folk using this. Then what do we do? It is akin to your kid saying “if you don’t let me do this I will hold my breath”.

We have nowhere to go. That is an empty threat as to do it would be suicide.

If money is king for these clowns then that is how we play it. Celtic say we will take no away tickets and advise our fans not to take any.

That is our nuclear deterrent for these monkeys.

It would mean we increase the league and play less games from playing teams twice or decrease the league which may happen anyway when two teams are set to fold and play less games.

Recontruntion may be required anyway. Celtic can then play a couple of glamour friendlies in the middle east or somewhere to make up our revenues.

I hope life after Rangers has been seriously looked at by Celtic. I hope Celtic freeze them out and never let them back in to a power of strength. They go under and so does the joint sponsorship. It’s the last time we should have anything jointly with them. When they go so does the term old firm. Let’s distance ourselves and improve the league for everyone’s good.

Yes. Fair enough. We can do that and if successful it would be effective. We can do that off our own bat. My question referred to league reconstruction etc – all of which I ‘ve read on this board.

As I suggested above if we resign from the SPL everybody else is bumped up a place and a gap is created at the bottom of Div3. As you say money is king and I’m fairly certain our application for that spot would be successful. Fans rally round a stripped back team and we march back up the SPL with a team that started young and has then matured into a tight competitive unit. It stroll the SPL and wins the following season’s Champions League. Nae bother.

  24. LiviBhoy

Increasing the league and reducing games, there will only be one loser in that, us poor season ticket holders, as hell will freeze over before clubs especially ours reduce prices accordingly

I applaud your post. A lot of really good ideas there and it’s progressive and positive. Football in Scotland is on the edge, and a bit of positivity or a few good ideas may not be enough, but if we survive then it will be the only show in town.

Sorry I can’t take time to offer more detailed thoughts, your post deserves more than the blinkered moaning about winter breaks you’ve had so far…. argh we don’t know when it’s winter anyway, blah blah. It’s not quite the point, but, how much explaining should we be expected to do?
