SPL threat effectively terminates football in Scotland

1889

Yesterday evening STV revealed the real outcome of last week’s meeting between Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir as a proverbial gun was put to the head of Scottish Football League clubs.

In short, SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, no doubt with the support of some clubs but without the prior knowledge or support of Celtic, has threatened to kick 20 SFL clubs out of the senior game unless they acquiesce to his demand to parachute Sevco into the First Division.

The proposal was presented by SFL chief executive, David Longmuir, and appears to carry his endorsement.

Five scenarios are portrayed:

‘Rangers’ remaining in the SPL is dismissed as SPL clubs have confirmed they will vote no.

‘Rangers’ going to the third division is objected to on two grounds, financial (which is laboured a bit) and – wait for it – “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

Ponder that one for a moment, “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

‘Rangers’ to the First Division is presented as being “financially possible to recover from this scenario”.

‘Rangers’ to SPL2 is dismissed as apparently this would create “a bigger divide” than moving ‘Rangers’ to the First Division but not changing the name of the league.  It is also noted that a legal challenge could bring paralysis.

Finally, they discuss ‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended, which apparently would lead to “complete financial meltdown”.

Then come the inducements to co-opt ‘Rangers’ into the First Division…. cash, your cash.  Lots and lots of your cash, an “immediate cash benefit for all 30 clubs!”  The exclamation mark is theirs!!

We could spend all day dissecting this disgraceful document but I’d like to focus on one immediate element:

‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended – complete financial meltdown.

So how do the SFA, SFL and the SPL rogues who participated in this shambles propose to ensure the SFA Independent Judicial Panel does not suspend ‘Rangers’ for subverting our game for over a decade for fielding illegally registered players for that period?

In short, it cannot.  The independent judicial process will itself need to be subverted.  As I suggested a few days ago, the judges will be told they are no longer wanted, we are back with the hand-selected SFA committee men.

The three most senior executives running our game have told you that one errant club is so powerful it cannot be subject to the rules and must not face the punishments which are due.

I’m not going to dispute the validity of this view (just now), but surely we deserve some honesty? If the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Premier League has accepted the ‘game’ is over, let’s hear from them. Where is the leadership from the SFA president on the collapse of the game under his watch? What are the chief executives saying to their paying customers?

Our sport cannot be subverted below radar.

You have been cheated and the rules will be changed to ensure there are no consequences.  This is no longer a sport, it is a financial accommodation where a few executives are threatening to expel 20 clubs, most of whom have over a century history in the senior game, to allow Sevco to start two divisions higher than they otherwise would.

Celtic can have nothing to do with this.

The game here is dead. The leagues are set to collapse, most likely, no matter what happens now.

41 Dogs being Wagged by 1 tail in Scottish Football.

If the latest proposals of the SFA, SPL, and SFL are an indication of how much Scottish Football need a Sevco or Club 12, or whatever they may be called, then quite frankly we’d all be better throwing the towel in.

I am happy to say that as a Celtic supporter for over 50 years I have enjoyed many great victories on the field of football, I have also suffered a few miserable times, both on and off the pitch.

But one thing I can say quite categorically is this, whatever we won, or lost, we did so playing fairly within the rules which applied to all the participants, well except for one notable exception, and that team very shortly will officially be dead.

No-one can deny that the death of Rangers will have a commercial knock-on effect on the SPL, but that is something everyone needs to accept and move on and strive to become stronger as the result of that.

But for the Football Authorities in Scotland to act against the wishes of the majority of supporters will most certainly backfire on them, the fans have spoken, but they refuse to listen, I believe they will live to regret that.

Come Wednesday of next week the vote by the SPL clubs will be taken and it will be confirmed that a Newco will not be allowed direct entry into the SPL, not because that is the right decision to take by the Chairmen and CEO’s, but because the supporters of 11 of the clubs said they would oppose it, make no mistake about this, if this vote had been taken 4 months ago before the fans spoke out, I believe the majority would have voted for the proposal.

The new proposals seem to say that the way forward for Scottish Football is to take the vast amount of money that the Celtic Supporters invest every year and distribute it amongst all the other clubs, well believe you me, you can forget that one.

Let’s look at some of the number of visiting supporters last season to Celtic Park. In 3 matches against St Johnstone, they brought a grand total of 382 supporters that is the total figure, not per game. Dunfermline in 2 matches brought 238 supporters. In fact apart a team that no longer exists, the largest visiting support was 626 in 2 matches against Dundee United.

So what the SFA and SPL are proposing now will result in this, if you as a Celtic Supporter pay on average £500 for a season ticket, they will share up to £250 of it amongst the other 11 clubs in the SPL, is that what we pay season tickets for?

They also intend to share the revenue from SKY and ESPN amongst all the clubs in Scotland, so every time you have to get on your supporters bus at 7am on a Sunday morning to travel to Dingwall or Inverness, just remember, the supporters of Morton and Partick Thistle will benefit from it too.

We need to send a message to Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster, and David Longmuir, if they think the way forward for Scottish Football is to cash in on the biggest support in Scotland, then they will get a rude awakening, we will not stand back and let that happen.

The Celtic Supporters Association called an Emergency Meeting of its Branches last Sunday with less than a week’s notice, we can do the same again, we have already discussed the drive to use the present situation to weaken Celtic, our supporters will not allow it to happen, and more importantly, nor will our club.

Maybe it is time for us to take the nuclear option, if Scottish Football can’t do without a Rangers, Celtic should give the 2 years notice required, and resign from the SPL, let’s see how they get on without Celtic and their supporters.

  2. Dungcaster is Ogilvie’s poodle. Until Ogilvie goes this reprehensible promotion of the worst cabal in footballing history will slouch onwards.

  3. im actually quite prepared to do what is best for celtic football club.

there are so many theory’s and skanky stories out there its pretty hard to know what to think would be best anymore.

therefore as a celtic fan ,it would be nice to get some direction from our club.

PL needs to make a statement about what is best for celtic fc…as a loyal celtic fan i am quite prepared to follow his lead and stay together ..as long as there is nothing really silly in his views.

this is not a time for celtic fans to be boycotting ,this is a time for us to stick together.

Unlike a few on here I don’t do ‘drama’ unless there actually is a drama to do.

Brimmer – totally concur with your point. We need to wait until something actually happens before making an announcement. In the meantime, keep the pressure on and influence. The real dram has still to unfold here. The current regulators are hell bent on killing the game in this country and are going to be looked on badly at the end of this farce. Still many hurdles for newco to overcome – and the voice of the customer will ultimately be heard. Football without fans is nothing……..

If Celtic don’t have a league to play in thanks to the corruption of those who run the game, then surely we have a strong case to put before EUFA for playing in another league as we are innocent victims in this scandal.

The point I am making perhaps badly is that such an imposition will lead those who love the game to do as you suggest in abandoning the rigged deck that the organised game will then represent but they will not need to abandon football entirely. They will simply watch the game again maybe in some simpler form but those who love the game will find a channel for that love elsewhere.

Some have asked what will happen to the 20 clubs abandoned? What is stop any or all of them with the basis of that love organising their own association their own league starting at the base – for the love of the game. That’s where it all started you know. Too many have forgotten that but that is something that Jock Stein definitely knew.

  17. I see Rangers Media have an add up for a pre season game against Southampton. Should someone tell them it’s been cancelled in order to ‘protect the integrity of the tournament’??????

  19. This is the Scottish Huns Wacht am Rhein moment – (or battle of the bulge to you and me) The last throw of the dice by an insane leadership in a futile attempt to negotiate more favourable surrender terms or at least delay their ultimate demise. Hitler (Ogilvie), Model, (Regan) and Von Manteuffel (Doncaster) have gathered their remaining resources and thrown this at the good guys. Who will be the Scottish footballs General McAuliffe and say ‘Nuts’ in reply to their ultimatum?

I think I said on here before that the Ghost of Angers would have no leverage from trying to make a deal with the rebel 10 clubs over voting, since that point is mute. The rebel 10 will become 11 one way or another and there is nothing to be gained by the Ghost from that.

Celtic must know this to be true, that the voting structure will change. The days of 11-1 voting in the SPL are numbered.

This means that some of these changes will (or would have occured) anyway, whether there is a ghost in the SPL, or SFL 1,2 or 3. Changes would have happened, soom sooner and some later.

I say let’s not panic. We can still sit back and enjoy the show.

When the dust does eventually settle and we see what picture emerges then Celtic can make an official statement. In the meantime I think we should be looking to our next game and our next goalie.

The Orcs are doing themselves in, sevco has no players and are losing fans. Perfect, if you ask me. I’m hoping that Brown’s Blues start to sign up some of the players currently abandning the Green Blues, and I’m also hoping that at least one other team is formed out of this mess. Who they going to let into the SFL then?

Just now, if we have too we should get behind the Brown Blues.

Paul67 I feel for you fella you have consistantly written about what was happening in Scottish footbal with the current rule book close at hand.I have said frequently that was an error on your part. The rule book was allways going to be torn up by the football authorities to benefit newco who are the new establishment club and that is exactly what is taking place right before our eyes.Paul you can never underestimate the power of the masons in all areas of Scottish life I am sorry to say this but from where I am sitting Scottish football is dead for all the honest fans through out the country they can no longer put there hard earned money into the corrupt game.H.H.
