SPL threat effectively terminates football in Scotland

1889

Yesterday evening STV revealed the real outcome of last week’s meeting between Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir as a proverbial gun was put to the head of Scottish Football League clubs.

In short, SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, no doubt with the support of some clubs but without the prior knowledge or support of Celtic, has threatened to kick 20 SFL clubs out of the senior game unless they acquiesce to his demand to parachute Sevco into the First Division.

The proposal was presented by SFL chief executive, David Longmuir, and appears to carry his endorsement.

Five scenarios are portrayed:

‘Rangers’ remaining in the SPL is dismissed as SPL clubs have confirmed they will vote no.

‘Rangers’ going to the third division is objected to on two grounds, financial (which is laboured a bit) and – wait for it – “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

Ponder that one for a moment, “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

‘Rangers’ to the First Division is presented as being “financially possible to recover from this scenario”.

‘Rangers’ to SPL2 is dismissed as apparently this would create “a bigger divide” than moving ‘Rangers’ to the First Division but not changing the name of the league.  It is also noted that a legal challenge could bring paralysis.

Finally, they discuss ‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended, which apparently would lead to “complete financial meltdown”.

Then come the inducements to co-opt ‘Rangers’ into the First Division…. cash, your cash.  Lots and lots of your cash, an “immediate cash benefit for all 30 clubs!”  The exclamation mark is theirs!!

We could spend all day dissecting this disgraceful document but I’d like to focus on one immediate element:

‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended – complete financial meltdown.

So how do the SFA, SFL and the SPL rogues who participated in this shambles propose to ensure the SFA Independent Judicial Panel does not suspend ‘Rangers’ for subverting our game for over a decade for fielding illegally registered players for that period?

In short, it cannot.  The independent judicial process will itself need to be subverted.  As I suggested a few days ago, the judges will be told they are no longer wanted, we are back with the hand-selected SFA committee men.

The three most senior executives running our game have told you that one errant club is so powerful it cannot be subject to the rules and must not face the punishments which are due.

I’m not going to dispute the validity of this view (just now), but surely we deserve some honesty? If the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Premier League has accepted the ‘game’ is over, let’s hear from them. Where is the leadership from the SFA president on the collapse of the game under his watch? What are the chief executives saying to their paying customers?

Our sport cannot be subverted below radar.

You have been cheated and the rules will be changed to ensure there are no consequences.  This is no longer a sport, it is a financial accommodation where a few executives are threatening to expel 20 clubs, most of whom have over a century history in the senior game, to allow Sevco to start two divisions higher than they otherwise would.

Celtic can have nothing to do with this.

The game here is dead. The leagues are set to collapse, most likely, no matter what happens now.

  2. If Celtic F.C. abandons the corruption that is Scottish football, then I am prepared to contribute towards its upkeep until we find a competitive league to play in. So would thousands if others, even if we live far away and can rarely visit Parkhead . We have to retain integrity in the midst of this incredible omnishambles.

Leave the ‘soccertainment’ to the zombies and they can just keep on playing with themselves.

The SFA has become the laughing stock of the footballing world, and even though that takes some doing, they’ve managed it.

Orange Clowns. Leave them to their twisted circus.

  3. sixtaeseven: No NewClub in SPL and it's Non-Negotiable! on

French club LeHavre are still advertising a match against Sevco Greens for the12th July to inaugurate their new stadium. 23000 of the 25000 tickets have been sold.

Should be interesting to see how that develops…

  4. I like many others am astounded by the proposal sent to the SFL clubs accompanied by a threat. A threat from the SPL to form SPL2 if they don’t get their way. Since the entire proposal requires a majority of SFL clubs to vote for it and an 8-4 majority of SPL clubs, then surely it is an empty threat. If an SFL club votes no to Rangers in SFL1 then would they join an SPL2 presumably with Rangers in it? Otherwise why would they vote no? What kind of league would it be? Would it be the strongest clubs? Not if the majority of Div 1 already say no to rangers in their division. Similarly with SPL clubs, surely their ‘No’ meant Rangers to Div 3, so why would they now vote them to the second tier?

Also the authors of this proposal have shown their hand as if they carried out there threat then they care nothing for all these benefits that are supposed to be for the good of the game as a whole or for the benefit of the lower divisions. Also with an SPL 2 where would that leave the other clubs? This shows their only concern is saving Rangers and their own self importance in a commercial league (as they see it).

Also how embarrassing if they get their way only for rangers to go into administration, be unable to field a team, unable to fulfil the requirements to join the SFA or be suspended from the SFA by the appellate tribunal (if it ever sits).

With so much uncertainty over Rangers they should be nowhere near the top flight. And we are all agreed on the morality of where they should be.

    Also.

What is the mechanism for Rangers to the 1st division. Surely any space should be filled by promotion from the 2nd. Is it relegation? For what purpose? They were docked 10 points for administration and the disrepute charge must be decided by the appellate tribunal never mind the fact that this is NEW Rangers. Where and for what purpose are they coming from?

  7. obviously I echo the sentiments on here today – if these proposals go through, I’m finished with Scottish Football until/if Celtic can play in another league.

I’d also like to express sympathy for the many decent, normal Rangers(IA) fans out there (yes yes, i know, but i do know a fair few of them, all decent guys! honestly!). This proposal basically shafts THEM again. Make them play the diddy teams, but in close-enough reach for the SPL/SFL to continue taking their hard-earned and redistribute as they see fit.

EVERYONE is being shafted here. EVERYONE. It benefits no-one that I can see, and NO-ONE i’ve spoken with about it agrees with the proposals. Utter, utter shambles, and I hope we have some sort of statement from Celtic sooner rather than later.

  8. We won’t need to worry about resigning from the SPL as they are doing a fine job dismantling the league themselves. Now the SFA through (Doncaster) has SFL (Longmuir) doing his bidding on behalf of a football club that doesn’t even exist…we should make clear that we will be fielding the development side or our U20s in both domestic competitions in future. Meanwhile the first team can enjoy more rest or enjoy a wee break in sunnier climes or perhaps a budget boosting friendly against foreign opposition.
