Spooked by the ghost of Compper

276

Clearly Brendan Rodgers bought Marvin Compper to the club in January because he felt he needed cover and experience in central defence, most probably for these Champions League qualification games.  He has now picked up another injury.  Despite plans clearly remaining unfulfilled, we are in a good position to travel to Trondheim this week, but despite confidence ahead of the Rosenborg game, the ghost of Compper spooks me.

Jozo Simunovic is fit, for now, although paying the price for an uncontrolled action.  Dedryck Boyata will return to the starting line-up soon, but with less than a year on his contract, I expect the big man’s agent will be busy marking cards elsewhere.  Kris Ajer and Jack Hendry have been holding fort, but the job Compper was recruited to do is not being done.

Two years ago we brought in Kolo Toure.  The big Ivorian was well past his prime and soon found the rigours of regular football too much, but he brought a calm to the team in the qualifiers, especially in a fraught night in Be’er Sheva.

I know coaches are reluctant to be pushed into making short term signings but this is one time it is advisable.

    I was just reading the details of that. The heading is they should make peace. The truth is that Ashley has been vindicated yet again,and it’s cost the huns a cool £600k or so.

    I can’t wait for their next board meeting.

    Who’s idea was this and who’s paying for it?

    Of course,that’s two questions-and both with entirely different answers!!!

    NB-I await the Jabba spin with interest.

    I never said we were weaker up front than at the back.But,at any time,we could be.Injuries,transfers.We cant run out and buy a top class striker just in case any of these events befall our strikers.

    Maybe Dembele will still be with us this season,but his continued injuries dont fill me with much confidence.Griff,in the same boat,at the moment.At any time,we could be left with Eddy,as the Rosenborg game showed.What if he gets injured?Would that be lack of foresight by the Board,or would it be more realistic to think it was bad effin luck,same as the position with our CHs,of whom at the moment,we have 3 good ones.Only circumstances has stopped them turning out together.Or just bad luck.

    Great post, well written, I get annoyed when someone goes to the trouble of posting legitimate concerns about the problems with our Back line and seemingly at times our lack of urgency in the transfer market , only to be shot down for …well being critical of Celtic . If our support never asked questions we would not be here today and never heard the expression ” the rebels have won “

  5. One thing is clear from many years of reading and posting on CQN, people are only interested in their own version of the truth, including me of course, I like to believe that our highly professional team at Celtic are working on getting us the players we need, others don’t that’s fine, but if E Tims piece of paper story is credible then so is Phil Macs about the transfer that fell through at the last moment??

    One thing is however true every year on CQN during the transfer window that very few of us will now what’s really going on until Catman or Lennybhoy turn up with the dope info.

    I did decide though that if Brenda gets pissed off and and and and if he leaves before ten in a row I am going to shave ma b***

    Celtic’s trip to Trondheim will be overseen by Swiss referee Sandro Scharer. Aged just 30, Scharer has overseen some 263 matches since his first game in 2013. He’s relatively experienced in continental fixtures, having taken charge of eight matches across the Champions League and Europa League, as well as five matches in the UEFA Youth League. Scharer also refereed matches in the French and German top flights, as well as being the man in the middle for a Qatar Stars league match. In his 263 matches, Scharer has dished out 1093 yellow cards, 27 red cards and awarded 82 penalties.

    How much has the Lying King cost the huns in legal fees? Must be 7 figures by now ?

    RANGERS are poised to sign a NEW Sports Direct deal to sell replica kits and have been forced to pay almost £500,000 in legal bills.

    The moves come after a merchandise row was settled out of court.

    That means:

    There should be 4.1 yellows in the game;

    There is a 10.3 % chance of a Red;

    There is a 31.2 % chance of a penalty.

    Celtic’s MOT last year wouldve passed with a big mention for the advisory section, which undoubtedly would mention “get decent CB’s”, its not an unusual request to try and acquire the best we can afford, the fact that we havent at this juncture doesnt make it any less valid. Individual errors from defenders always seem to cost us, but some team in europe is going to be able to cope with our attackers and thats when we need our defenders the most, sadly AEK may have come to soon for us.

    You don’t need to spend anymore money, to skelp Scottish pub ? teams, surely the bored are pursuing that line of thinking?

    Ah mean, Europe, one trophy in 52 years, who cares about Europe?

    If, if we get into the CL group stage, what difference will it make, you’ll still be told that there’s no money, so what’s the point? No more European tankings to look forward to is surely a plus?

    The last time we had a manager who could get us to the latter stages in Europe, the PLC operative’s were digging tunnels underneath him, so, surely it stands to reason that, if we’ve a manager who gets us skelped up n down the CL group, surely tunnels should be getting dug underneath him as well? And they are being dug as ‘we’ type ;

  15. I thought this an interesting comment on Phil`s site re reduced Away support at Celtic V Sevco games:

    “The upside of this reduction in numbers is that it now means Police Scotland’s excuse of we cannot wade in amongst thousands to identify and arrest those guilty of Sectarian behaviour no longer holds water. The much smaller groups means arrests can easily be made in both venues to help to eliminate the sectarian scourge from our game.”

    This is probably the biggest financial hit Sevco could have taken here…an absolute disaster for them. And it’s for ever and ever.

    Anyway my bet on Wednesday is going to be…Celtic to win the game and Jamesy to score in 90 mins.

    Of course it is valid to request we try to signs as good a CB (or CB’s) as we can.

    I think the difference between the ‘camps’ is that there are those who think we are trying but our efforts have been in vain and those who think we aren’t trying hard enough / don’t think it’s that big a problem.

    I tend to go with the former.
