Spooked by the ghost of Compper

276

Clearly Brendan Rodgers bought Marvin Compper to the club in January because he felt he needed cover and experience in central defence, most probably for these Champions League qualification games.  He has now picked up another injury.  Despite plans clearly remaining unfulfilled, we are in a good position to travel to Trondheim this week, but despite confidence ahead of the Rosenborg game, the ghost of Compper spooks me.

Jozo Simunovic is fit, for now, although paying the price for an uncontrolled action.  Dedryck Boyata will return to the starting line-up soon, but with less than a year on his contract, I expect the big man’s agent will be busy marking cards elsewhere.  Kris Ajer and Jack Hendry have been holding fort, but the job Compper was recruited to do is not being done.

Two years ago we brought in Kolo Toure.  The big Ivorian was well past his prime and soon found the rigours of regular football too much, but he brought a calm to the team in the qualifiers, especially in a fraught night in Be’er Sheva.

I know coaches are reluctant to be pushed into making short term signings but this is one time it is advisable.

    Auldheid,

So what do we do with extra money when it comes in if upping the wages is not good for the business? And we are talking serious money here. If your answer is grow the business bit by bit taking small steps I would agree with that. You can always throw money at things sure but would Lennoxtown for instance need a 10 mill windfall? One of these summers we could have a lot of extra money.

    Hail Hail

    ==============

I couldn’t have made myself clear. I’m saying upping the wages and with it the wage structure is good business as opposed to the more risky sell then buy a replacement.

It avoids the pitfall of having to sell if a CL money does not come in, and that it makes for a more settled side season to season and that reduces risk of not qualifying. A virtuous circle.

Now if that produces spare cash then investing (and by that I mean any activity that makes money ) in other areas is the way to go.

I see Celtic will host the Guinness Pro Rugby 7s next year, Having a splendid stadium helps attract that kind of additional income (but watch our grass).

I’m not sure how profitable a hotel/museum would be but some cost benefit would suggest indicators are it would ion.

Then there is CL or EL Finals that we might become eligible to host.

All act as cushions for any hard times and make for a stable platform to build on step by step.

Football is too fragile a basket to put all our eggs in.

This of course is just a reflection of my own cautious nature having grown up through times when every £ was a prisoner.

    Sftb,,,

AS we are mosty into the hypothetical now its probably best to halt and tomorrow probably would have seen me halt it anyway.

I must disagree about its just as daft to antagonise Brendan in year 3. Its not. After 2 years of him getting what he wants it would be easier to say aint happening in year 3 . Plus knowing hes a Celtic man leaves him less likely to walk as he can grasp 10.

The inflation you mention within the game would naturally have seen us move away from our preferred 1 to 3 million buys to 4 or 5 being standard for us. This was always on the cards. While a bigger fee should mean less risk it doesnt ,, these days a bigger fee is just inflation.

If we want to move away from kissing frogs then the 6/7 million bracket provides more security so Im not surprised to see us go there . I would have us go more often.

I hate the fact there is soo much guesswork involved here. I actually know very little about my club of choice . Any medium to long term goals have not been forwarded to these ears,,we just seem to tread water. Those in charge give us very very little info. And they seem to be hanging around just for the sake of it.

I hope whoever comes next is more open with us.

Auldheid I do agree with upping wages . And spreading any money around is smart. We are on the same page.

    Hail Hail and goodnight CQN

Another good article from JF. This is happening too frequently,I might need to have my mods changed(!)

Btw,if you take into account the £3m they gifted His Mikeness-TM THECLUMPANY – last year, plus all the legal fees-his and their own, yesterday’s £600k was only the latest instalment-plus their shockingly low “dividend” on the original deal,I’d hazard a guess that Sevco’s income from that source has been negative over the course of their lifetime.

Such a scenario could well appeal to Mike Ashley’s Machiavellian side.

Subtly encourage a huge bid from a rival firm, and withdraw. That means the huns are forced to accept the rival bid. Rival has to increase prices to cover costs. Hun fans don’t buy the goods, club and rival company get even less than before.

    So,aye. I’m all for that,go for it.

  21. A genuine question:

How many games must a professional footballer play before he is considered `experienced` ?

    Oh, another question:

If Kris Ajer and Jack Hendry played for any other SPFL team, how would we ( and the MSSM ) rate them?

I will read any replies later. Time for a windy bike ride.
