Records published by the Intellectual Property Office yesterday show Sports Direct own quite a lot of trademarks, including:
Rangers
Scope of trademark: organisation of sporting activities.
This property has not been licenced to the football club, or joint ventures like Rangers Retail Ltd. Sports Direct own the rights to call a football team Rangers.
Rangers (again)
Scope: from clothing to trinkets and everything in between.
Owned by Sports Direct, licenced to Rangers Retail Ltd
Glasgow Rangers Football Club
Scope: clothes trinkets, etc.
Owned by Sports Direct, licenced to Rangers Retail Ltd
RFC, Broxi Bear, The Gers, Follow Follow, Ibrox, Rangers News, Rangers Travel and all the crests, badges and logos are all owned by Sports Direct and licenced to Rangers Retail Ltd, which is 76% owned by the Sports Direct group.
So if the club want to call themselves Rangers, or Glasgow Rangers, they need to cut a deal with Mike Ashley. The most humiliating aspect of the whole thing is that the new board appeared to know nothing about this until the Intellectual Property Office published the details yesterday. The lack of due diligence is breathtaking.
The only things Ashley seems to have ignored is that pejorative nickname they complain about so much, and the phrase Murray Park, although he has security over the training ground of that name.
We warned them repeatedly. Ashley was in control and had the opportunity to ensure he got what he wanted before the EGM. One of the richest men in Europe, he is a formidable opponent and known to be utterly ruthless.
You can’t bully him. Better to recognise this reality and accept your subservient future than create a scenario where even another liquidation event would not free the ‘Rangers’ football brand from the ironclad yolk of a man you’ve made your enemy.
What have the lemmings done to themselves? We were told Mike Ashley was a business man and he would acquiesce as this was just business. In the history of business miscalculations this is up there with the guy at Pye who rejected The Beatles.
It’s all their own work, they can’t blame the SFA, SPL, SFL, Celtic, Her Majesty’s Revenue’, the BBC or Craig Whyte. A recovery which would have been difficult enough is now completely and predictably wrecked.

Do you agree that Mike Ashley likes making money?
I think plenty of folk had surmised that he made around £3-4M in profit from Rangers Retail and that was before he owned all the TMs. So far he’s put in something like £8M including shares. So he’s made half his money back.
I think the biggest profit we made was about £10M from a good CL group stage but we had all our merchandising etc included in that.
The average(ish) figure people have put down as being needed to get them into the CL is £40M.
So here’s his choice:
£40M and needing 4 consecutive CL group stages before he turns a profit. There’s a lag on getting the money so a minimum 5 years to break even point.
or
£5-10M to get them sustainable and circa £5-7M out every year. Profit after yr 2 and little or no risk. So he’s be £25-35M up by the point of breaking even if he chooses the CL route – the figures for which (as hinted above) include retail money being put back to the club and not taken out by humself / SD.
If he gets them sustainable they will occasionally challenge us, and they will occasionally get the CL spot. Let’s say that happens at the end of the 5 yr cycle. He could be £50M up with very little input and at that point I’d sell if I was him.
There’s no sense in him spending big with Rangers. There was never any sense in anybody doing so.

I could see your point if Ashley was on the board or was a major shareholder, but King and his cronies put paid to that did they not?
Yes, it is in Ashley’s interests for Rangers to survive, but any financial assistance he might give in the future will be nothing more than further loans and those would only be in small blocks of 500k or thereabouts and even then, it would have to be secured, so either they will need to have repaid all previous secured loans, or they would have to magically conjure up something else as security. Is there anything left, other than future season ticket sales?
There is no danger of Ashley pumping tens of millions into Ibrox. Not now that he has lost what control he had in the boardroom.
That ship has sailed.
