Sports retailing and spending what you earn

You get the sense that the Sword of Damocles is hanging over Newco Rangers.  Some wondered about the sense in Mike Ashley controversially renaming Ibrox as the rumoured ‘Sports Direct Outlet Village’ but having bought the rights to do so for £1, he is now able to leverage this detail in his earlier loan.

He has the retail and stadium naming rights but ownership of the club badge, details of which it appears the Newco board leaked to the Daily Record yesterday, would allow him to control the strips, novelty ducks and other tat, no matter where it’s sold.  Any future shirt deal would need his authority, as it would require use of ‘his’ logo.  Which would inevitably lead to shirt deals being concluded by one of Ashley’s in-house brands.

All this makes sense if you are a retailer with notions of monopoly status.  ‘Rangers’ branded pencil cases, alarm clocks and shirts will continue to sell, no matter in which league Newco inhabit.  It’s a straight merchandise play from the retailer, who is the only person in the UK in a position to exploit clubs going through a hard time, like Newco.

Ashley is thick-enough skinned after sitting through all that Newcastle fans could throw in his direction for years.  He doesn’t need to be liked, and with control over intellectual property like the badge, he doesn’t even need to be the retailer to make money every time club merchandise is sold.  Newco wouldn’t even be able to put the badge on their tickets without his agreement.

In many ways this proposed deal is an inevitable step.  Clubs are enormous merchandising opportunities, the people who can profit most from this are the retailers.  It is, of course, only inevitable because of the state Sir David Murray left oldco in.  As soon as he handed the keys to a liquidation specialist the game was over.

News in today’s Herald that an S&P study makes Celtic the least likely publicly listed football club in Europe to default is likely to sound a little hollow to some who watched us against Accies on Sunday. There are many ways to build a sustainable and successful football team, but none of them involve spending more than you earn.

    I dont see the difference between NUFC owners and Celtics owners in how they run their respective clubs.

    Can someone explain the difference to me ?

  3. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

    I dont buy it. We have not see any civil unrest the first time round. They can hardly muster a demo outside hampdump or Ibrox. They have had the absolute urine extracted from them financially and credit to them. They still keep giving.

    One thing is for sure if Celtic say nowt then our custodians are charltans. Especially those that steered us on the FFP course and are still profiting from Celtic and their association with Celtic.

  4. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

    Buy your Nookie FC top and get your hun top 50% off.

    Its a goer methinks

  5. Roy Keane given prominence on STV News as it is announced that he “Takes another swipe at Celtic”.

    So what sensational revelation was it this time from Roy? He was 10th choice for the Celtic job.

    The sooner Celtic get out of Scottish football, the better.

  6. The Earl of Denby on

    Mike Ashley is the sole owner of NUFC.

    Celtic is owned by thousands of shareholders.

    Agreed, it does sound like Mike Ashley has studied the DD book of running a football club on the cheap. Why do we not buy NUFC off Mike Ashley and give our largest shareholder what he wants ?

  8. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

    Mike Ashley will present his takeover as a fans buyout of 51%. His mum will get 49% and be rest assured his auntie Betty will have 2%. The bears will be in honey Salmond heaven and back him foolishly as we VERY WELL KNOW

    Rangers were liquidated in 2012.

    Sevco/Newco Rangers are a new club.

    These are the two facts everyone of us should continue to maintain as the truth.

    Only when we give up holding this view will their revision of facts hold sway.

    Maybe sumdy should tell the Celtic ‘bored’!!!

    Last seasons – trouble-torn – Glasgow Cup Final at Firhill had the

  11. Mike Ashley has a plan. He will become majority shareholder at Ibrox then sell NUFC to Rangers, change its name to Rangers and move to Ibrox, taking Rangers into the EPL and finally sticking 2 fingers up to the Newcastle public for their treatment of him over the years.

    That’s the most frightening thing I’ve read today. :(

  13. the glorious balance sheet on

    When do we stop talking about Rangers and start talking about our own challenges?

    Like how we build a whole new team for next summer?

    Denayer will be back at Man City;

    Berget will maybe get a job as a postman if he gets a haircut but he sure as hell won’t be here;

    Brown, commons, kayal ,zaluska are all out of contract, and it’s not certain they will be here;

    Van Dijk will be sold;

    Guidetti is open to offers come January;

    Wakaso and Tonev will probably be back from whence they came;

    Scepovic has not shown as yet that he is an improvement on what has gone before;

    Izzy has imploded since he set off for the World Cup;

    It’s pretty much a whole new team required. But you can’t borrow 11 players so it’ll be interesting to see what crazy stunts Peter Lawwell conjures up, all the while people gawp at the latest Sevco car crash unable or unwilling to see that we’re about to hit the wall in a big way.

    I’ll say it right now – there is as much of a chance in my opinion of Camelon Juniors being in the CL next season as there is of Celtic being there.

    Brace yourself for the steady supply of kojo posts denigrating Commons and Brown – they’ve already started – and hints about their glycerol levels being all wrong as they are ushered towards the exit as the PL fan club clap and holler with delight like frenzied seals being thrown a few rotting fish.

    It’s good to fun to laugh at Sevco. But not so much when the hilarity diverts us from confronting our own issues.

  14. Ok Thirsday night quiz….

    Can you name anybody who (given Celtic wage bill and other comparative advantages) could have led Celtic to a lower league position by this point in the season…. ?

    ( need not necessarily be anyone associated with football management)

    Best I could come up with is Ally McCoist… Other than that I’m stumped

  15. RWE @16.28hrs.

    My thoughts exactly, you have not oversimplified it and I dont think you are ‘out of step’ with many who share similar stories of family who “mattered”

    So the gist of pauls article .rangers are in big financial trouble and celtic are very solvent,

    Cults Bhoy-

    The advantages you mention were watered down the minute we became a temporary halfway house for other clubs’ rejects and projects.

    The manager has made mistakes. But for deflected goals v Dundee Aberdeen and a soft penalty v Motherwell we would be 4 points worse off.

    But the manager is being put in a straitjacket by constraints imposed by Peter Lawwell.

    Mourinho etc would make a better job of it. But would even someone like that have been able to deliver a result over 2 legs v Legia with what he had to work with?

    Sort the boardroom out before trying to sort out the dugout. Because otherwise we are just papering over the cracks.

  20. Nothing`makes me laugh like the huns in more trouble.I still have a nagging doubt Ashley won’t let them go into admin as he has too much to lose with his retail tie in.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if he bailed them out short term to get what he wants.

    On matters Celtic. We have had the perfect opportunity to remove RD for a competent manager who actually sees how we are constantly overrun in midfield.

    Never mind the balance sheet look decent.

  21. Greenpinata

    Appreciate the feedback, and nice to know that others feel the same way.

    I won’t mention the ‘P’ word as when I did earlier it sent a few into paroxisms of negativity.

    Hope you’re well.

  22. “The manager has made mistakes. But for deflected goals v Dundee Aberdeen and a soft penalty v Motherwell we would be 4 points worse off.”

    The glorious balance sheet.

    I’d take that. But I’d want the own goal v ICT to be discounted. Oh and the deflected goal v Maribor that seen us eliminated in the champions league to be erased too.
