You get the sense that the Sword of Damocles is hanging over Newco Rangers. Some wondered about the sense in Mike Ashley controversially renaming Ibrox as the rumoured ‘Sports Direct Outlet Village’ but having bought the rights to do so for £1, he is now able to leverage this detail in his earlier loan.
He has the retail and stadium naming rights but ownership of the club badge, details of which it appears the Newco board leaked to the Daily Record yesterday, would allow him to control the strips, novelty ducks and other tat, no matter where it’s sold. Any future shirt deal would need his authority, as it would require use of ‘his’ logo. Which would inevitably lead to shirt deals being concluded by one of Ashley’s in-house brands.
All this makes sense if you are a retailer with notions of monopoly status. ‘Rangers’ branded pencil cases, alarm clocks and shirts will continue to sell, no matter in which league Newco inhabit. It’s a straight merchandise play from the retailer, who is the only person in the UK in a position to exploit clubs going through a hard time, like Newco.
Ashley is thick-enough skinned after sitting through all that Newcastle fans could throw in his direction for years. He doesn’t need to be liked, and with control over intellectual property like the badge, he doesn’t even need to be the retailer to make money every time club merchandise is sold. Newco wouldn’t even be able to put the badge on their tickets without his agreement.
In many ways this proposed deal is an inevitable step. Clubs are enormous merchandising opportunities, the people who can profit most from this are the retailers. It is, of course, only inevitable because of the state Sir David Murray left oldco in. As soon as he handed the keys to a liquidation specialist the game was over.
News in today’s Herald that an S&P study makes Celtic the least likely publicly listed football club in Europe to default is likely to sound a little hollow to some who watched us against Accies on Sunday. There are many ways to build a sustainable and successful football team, but none of them involve spending more than you earn.

Yes it did work v barca at home. But then we tried it v barca away last season to disastrous effect. I also remember us coming a cropper on other occasions with Adam at left back.
I just thought that coaches who had seen a lot more of Celtic than Ronny had over the last 2 years could have helped him out on that one.
To be honest, I’m not a great fan of Adam at right back either in Europe. I’d always have Lustig there instead. Look at the goal Maribor scored at Celtic Park and adam’s attempts to stop the cross.
He offers a lot going forward and links well with Forrest but in my view he is a proven weak link defensively in Europe. Especially at left back. And one great performance doesn’t change that.

He can’t own both, and Newcastle is breaking even at the moment after him lending the business over 100m, but he might well be looking at what will happen to Newcastle and to the exposure of the sports direct brand if they go out of the EPL.
It’s difficult to second guess someone like Ashley, his behaviour and motivations seem so different to people like us

Wim Jansen acknowledged that Murdo MacLeod gave him the heads up on existing players at Celtic Park when he took over and also that it was Murdo that influenced him to sign Paul Lambert (much against the wishes of Jock Brown who thought Jim Magilton was a better shout)
That seemed to work ok for Wim that season so I thought Ronny would maybe be keen to learn from that sort of example.
Who knows maybe Collins and Kennedy have given him lots of advice that he’s chosen to disregard. I guess we will never know.

Great to speak to you again, hope you and your family are well. I would love to have your confidence, but being at all the home games, euro included, we seem to be going backwards. Can you honestly see improvement? Quite honestly I can’t. I seem to see a deterioration every game we play. It’s as if the players don’t seem to have a clue what is required. That is my biggest concern. But heyho, I will still be there throughout, but I have reservations whether RD will. IMHO.

I’d guess that they are being told that it’s not enough of a problem that they need to worry about it yet, panic the country, or more importantly commit resources to deal with it, so they do the bare minimum to cover themselves in the event that it does blow up. They aren’t spending any money on it

How ye doin’ auld yin??? (pot-kettle). Huvnae gabbed for a while. The “boss” is as well as she will ever be, and that means fine. :-) Yip, my faith is being stretched but will never wane. I honestly cannot see a way out of these performances. I really hope he is capable of turning this round, but with, how many, 6, players on loan, is that correct, and 1 who doesn’t want to be here, is this honestly getting us prepared for the excrecia returning to the SPL next season, that’s if we are still in it. I have serious doubts, and it’s not all RDs fault. This Lawwell must be held ultimately responsible for this seasons CL and, if it goes pearshape, an SPL disaster. He has overstepped the mark and, although his bonus is safe, it’s a pity the club he is supposed to love, is not. :-)))

Personally I couldn’t give a monkeys what’s going on over on the southside. They got what they deserved, they were liquidated, end of. Continued focus on their shady, acrimonious soap opera only distracts from what’s going on at Celtic Park, with the team and management structure.
The single issue that concerns me over the huns is the language and message that will come from Celtic the PLC when the unwashed bigots make their way into Paradise once more (shudder). Will will see a meek statement along the lines of “there’s nuthin we can dae” and an open embrace of past “Old Firm” terminology, or will there be a refreshing stance on anti-bigotry while ensuring in no certain terms that they understand they are a new club. Interesting times ahead.
Looks like our right sided defenders will be fit after the international break and not before time. Efe could do with a wee break.

I agree with other posters, when Lustig is fit, to play a diamond formation. We played our best last season in the games v Hearts & the Mothers using it.
A twelve nil aggregate score would indicate using the diamond is best for the players we have.
I thought when Nir Bitton was brought on to bolster our midfield when the Dons got into the game weeks ago, Ronny made the right move.
